China's Moonshot AI releases open-source model to reclaim market position
Empower your mind, elevate your skills
Chinese artificial intelligence startup Moonshot AI released a new open-source AI model on Friday, joining a wave of similar releases from local rivals, as it seeks to reclaim its position in the competitive domestic market. The model, called Kimi K2 , features enhanced coding capabilities and excels at general agent tasks and tool integration, allowing it to break down complex tasks more effectively, the company said in a statement.Moonshot claimed the model outperforms mainstream open-source models in some areas, including DeepSeek's V3, and rival capabilities of leading U.S. models such as those from Anthropic in certain functions such as coding. The release follows a trend among Chinese companies toward open-sourcing AI models, contrasting with many U.S. tech giants like OpenAI and Google that keep their most advanced AI models proprietary. Some American firms, including Meta Platforms, have also released open-source models.Open-sourcing allows developers to showcase their technological capabilities and expand developer communities as well as their global influence, a strategy likely to help China counter U.S. efforts to limit Beijing's tech progress.Other Chinese companies that have released open-source models include DeepSeek, Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu.Founded in 2023 by Tsinghua University graduate Yang Zhilin, Moonshot is among China's prominent AI startups and is backed by internet giants including Alibaba. The company gained prominence in 2024 when users flocked to its platform for its long-text analysis capabilities and AI search functions. However, its standing has declined this year following DeepSeek's release of low-cost models, including the R1 model launched in January that disrupted the global AI industry.Moonshot's Kimi application ranked third in monthly active users last August but dropped to seventh place by June, according to aicpb.com, a Chinese website that tracks AI products.

US Should Not Burn Relationship With "Strong Ally Like India": Nikki Haley
New York: The US should not burn its relationship with a "strong ally like India" and give a pass to China, Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley said on Tuesday, amid President Donald Trump's attacks against New Delhi over tariffs and purchases of Russian oil. "India should not be buying oil from Russia. But China, an adversary and the number one buyer of Russian and Iranian oil, got a 90-day tariff pause," Nikki Haley said in a post on X. "Don't give China a pass and burn a relationship with a strong ally like India," she said. Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina, was the US Ambassador to the United Nations under Trump's first presidential term, becoming the first Indian-American to be appointed to a cabinet-level post in the US administration. In 2013, she officially announced her candidacy for the 2024 presidential election and withdrew from the race in March last year. Her comments came hours after Trump said India has not been a "good trading partner" and announced he will raise tariffs on India "very substantially over the next 24 hours" because New Delhi is buying Russian oil and "fueling" the "war machine". India on Monday mounted an unusually sharp counterattack on the US and the European Union for their "unjustified and unreasonable" targeting of New Delhi for its procurement of Russian crude oil. New Delhi's response came after Trump asserted that Washington will substantially raise tariffs on goods from India over its energy ties with Russia. Meanwhile, Trump, in an interview with CNBC responded to a question on China and its leader, Xi Jinping, and said, "We have a very good relationship". Trump added that he might have a meeting with the Chinese President "before the end of the year, most likely, if we make a deal." He said he won't have a meeting if a deal doesn't materialise. "But we're getting very close to a deal. We're getting along with China very well." Trump added that China is "very reliant" on the US. "My relationship with them is very good. I think we'll make a good deal. It's not imperative, but I think we're going to make a good deal." He added that he has had a "great relationship" with President Xi. "We respect him a lot. They respect us a lot." (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

OpenAI introduces free customizable AI models: Price, features and more
OpenAI announced two new open-weight AI language models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, on Tuesday, August 5. These models offer similar capabilities to the company's O-series, as reported by TechCrunch. This marks the first time since OpenAI rolled out GPT-2 in 2019. OpenAI releases two new AI models.(Reuters) The company stated that the text-only models have been specially designed to be used as lower-cost options, which can be easily run and customized by developers and researchers. OpenAI releases lower-cost models OpenAI's latest release comes after tech giants like Meta and Mistral AI, backed by Microsoft, as well as Chinese startup DeepSeek, unveiled their open-weight models in the past few years. According to CNBC, the AI model is considered open weight when all its parameters or elements that have been utilized to improve the output and prediction at the time of training are publicly made available. Such models not only offer control and transparency in the respective field, but also remain quite different from the open-source models, where the full source code is made available to customers to modify and use. OpenAI President Greg Brockman said it is "exciting" to see the developing ecosystem and that the company is looking forward to contributing to it. "...we are excited to contribute to that and really push the frontier and then see what happens from there,' the outlet quoted Brockman as saying. The two models, which have been dubbed "state-of-the-art," remain freely available to download from the Hugging Face platform. For this project, OpenAI partnered with Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, Cerebras, and Groq to see how the models work on various chips. In a statement, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that OpenAI has shown "what could be built on Nvidia AI — and now they're advancing innovation in open-source software.' During a briefing, the company highlighted that its new open models are capable of sending complex queries to AI models in the cloud. This means whenever it is unable to perform a specific task, then the developers will be able to connect it to the more capable closed models of the company, per TechCrunch. The two new AI models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, underwent a coding test on Codeforces and scored 2622 and 2516. They have outperformed DeepSeek's R1 model. The release of OpenAI's open weight models comes after the company delayed the launch on a repeated basis. Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed in an X post that it required extra time to 'run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas.' FAQs: 1. How to try new OpenAI models? As per the company, users can download them from Hugging Face and GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license. These are being made available to run on PCs via LM Studio and Ollama. 2. What are the new AI models from OpenAI? These include open-weight AI language models, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. 3. What's the price for new OpenAI models? They are free to download and users can customize them accordingly.
