Inkatha Freedom Party stands by Mayor Myeza amid assault claims

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) said it will not fire Inkosilangalibalele Local Municipality Mayor, Mduduzi "Sobholenyoni" Myeza, from his position after he assaulted a female staff member, who is also a party member.
Myeza allegedly manhandled Zanele Mazibuko who is a party's official.
Speaking to Daily News, Mazibuko said the mayor got agitated after she questioned him about who appointed Fani Fani as the chairperson.
She said that irked Myeza which led to the alleged assault.
'The mayor assaulted me because he doesn't want to be questioned. I've opened a case of assault against him and the matter is currently before the court.
"We will be going back to court tomorrow (Wednesday) and we will see how it goes,'Mazibuko said.
She also expressed her disappointment at the lack of support from the organisation, and said that the party had not done anything to remedy the situation.
Mazibuko said she was expected to work with the mayor even though she wasn't comfortable with it.
The party's National spokesperson Mkhulekwa Hlengwa told the publication that the party can't fire Myeza based on allegations.

Hlengwa said although the matter was still in a court of law, it didn't mean that the mayor was guilty.
'We must follow the rule of natural justice. We can't take any decision before the process in court is concluded.
"The claims remain allegations (at this stage) and those allegations must be tested in a court of law, so what action would you want us to take?', asked the IFP spokesperson.
An IFP member known to the publication, said Mazibuko's situation was testament that the organisation would always be patriarchal and that it was resistant to change.
'Our rights as women in the organisation will never be considered and we have allowed this attitude to be entrenched in the movement as women of this organisation.
"Our fellow male party members, don't want to be opposed, especially from women. When you do that, they feel insulted. We can't just say 'yes, baba' all the way.
"Women have opinions, we want to be part of the solution,' the member stated.
She said it was hypocritical of the movement to say Mazibuko's claims were 'allegations' whereas she was physically assaulted by one of the members and the matter was before the court. Myeza appeared at the Estcourt Magistrate's Court on Monday.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson's in KZN, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, confirmed that the mayor appeared in court.

In their court documents, SAPOA CEO Nilesh 'Neil' Gopal said they are seeking to challenge three items in the Budget, namely the Cleaning Tariff, the Fixed Water Charge, and the Fixed Sanitation Charge. They are hoping to have the budget declared unconstitutional and invalid. SAPOA's membership currently comprises more than 90% of the country's commercial and retail property industry, including some of the largest property-owning companies in South Africa. The City of Cape Town filed its answering affidavit where Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis explained that 'in substance this application questions the role of the City in the determination of a budget at all and whether the City, or any other municipality, can indeed forge ahead on any new or innovative path to ensure not only better service delivery for all now, but also in the future'. The mayor explained that they received 15,210 comments through both the March and May public participation processes related to the tariffs. 'Residents and organisations opposed the overall increases in rates and tariffs. Hill-Lewis, in his affidavit, said that the City did not lightly decide to impose the three fixed tariffs which are the centre of SAPOA's litigation. 'Neither does the City have ready alternatives simply there for the plucking, to replace the budgetary shortfall that will ensue should they be set aside. This shortfall will be an amount of R4,233,768,467 if all three fixed tariffs are set aside. He also explained that property value bands differ from the 'cent amount in the Rand' (being the basis of calculating property rates) as contemplated in the Rates Act. 'Property value bands are not applied or utilised under the Rates Act. The only commonality is that the Municipal Valuation Rolls used by both: (1) for property rates, the Rate-in-Rand (RiR) is applied to the municipal property valuation to compute the property rates payable; whereas (2) the property value band into which a particular property falls is determined by reference to its municipal property valuation. He said that Cape Town's fixed charge serves as a deliberate and rational design intended to secure the revenue necessary to maintain and upgrade infrastructure, improve resilience and ensure reliable service delivery in the face of increasing climate-related uncertainty. The matter is expected to be heard in the Western Cape High Court in September.

We speak all of its languages. We know what the municipality looks like on the inside," he said. He remarked that his team doesn't presume to know everything. He took stock of his administration's achievements during his 18-month tenure as mayor before being ousted through a vote of confidence last year. According to him, his administration improved the city's audit outcome and achieved the biggest improvement in financial sustainability of all metros in 2023. They also devised a solution to the Hammanskraal water crisis, ensuring residents received clean water from taps instead of tankers. Under his leadership, the city's executive appointed competent professionals to management positions and backed city manager Johann Mettler in his efforts to dismiss the Rooiwal Five, officials implicated in a tender scandal involving businessman Edwin Sodi. He indicated that his administration also stood up to a violent strike, fighting for Tshwane residents who couldn't afford a R600 million salary increase for councillors and officials. Brink highlighted other achievements, including budgeting for solar-powered streetlights and dedicated streetlight teams to combat crime, establishing community uplifting precincts, and improving waste removal services. However, he noted that since the DA and its coalition partners were removed from office, Tshwane has fallen behind on revenue collection targets, resulting in an R857 million deficit at the end of the 2024/25 financial year. Deputy Executive Mayor and MMC for Finance, Eugene Modise, recently said the city achieved a significant milestone by collecting R40.5 billion in cash revenue for the 2024/25 financial year, which is approximately 98% of its target of R41.3 billion. Brink also criticised the current administration's decision to appeal a court ruling regarding the city cleansing levy, labelling it a waste of taxpayers' money.

National Dialogue will be in the hands of South Africans
The National Dialogue will take place within communities before the next national convention, Despite concerns that the National Dialogue has been 'hijacked' by the ANC and government, Lindiwe Mazibuko, who is a member of the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) has reassured South Africans that the process is citizen-led. Mazibuko delivered the closing address at the end of the first national convention in Pretoria on Saturday. The convention brought members of different sectors together with other stakeholders to discuss the framework of the dialogue process in communities. 'From the outset, we established that citizens will drive this dialogue grounded in our President's commitment to unity. This dialogue is owned by the people,' she said. Tough times ahead for the country Mazibuko said the process of national engagement will not be easy, but she said the EPG will be there to ensure the success of the National Dialogue. Her comments also come as several political parties and legacy foundations have distanced themselves from the dialogue, citing transparency and time frame issues. 'The road ahead will not be easy, our obstacles are deep-rooted and complex, we will have setbacks and we will have disagreements, there may be moments where despair seems more appealing than hope. 'The imminent persons group, which I am proud to be part of, is committed to walking this path with you. 'We will not waiver or abandon our efforts. This dialogue is for the people, and it belongs to you,' she said.
