Mayoral candidate's strategy for Tshwane's 2026 elections

DA's mayoral candidate for Tshwane in the 2026 elections, Cilliers Brink, is set to win the hearts and minds of the electorates by engaging with them directly and prioritising basic service delivery issues as part of his campaign.
He pledged to interact with Tshwane residents from all walks of life over the coming months after he was officially announced as the DA Tshwane mayoral candidate on Friday.
"In the next few months, I want to meet you, and understand what our municipality can do or stop doing to make your life better," he said.
Brink, who served as the mayor of Tshwane from 2023 before being ousted through a motion of no confidence in September last year, was previously a Member of Parliament for the DA.

According to him, his campaign team has extensive experience in government, with members representing every part of the city.
"We come from every part of this city. We speak all of its languages. We know what the municipality looks like on the inside," he said.
He remarked that his team doesn't presume to know everything. Instead, they will listen to the people of Tshwane and use what they learn to inform the pledges they will unveil later this year.
The pledges will focus on key areas such as fighting crime, ending corruption, rebuilding infrastructure, and delivering value for money.
"The pledges will be specific, and they will help us deliver change. But they will also help residents hold us to account at the next election," Brink said.
He extended an invitation to all Tshwane residents, businesses, churches, civil society organisations, and city lovers to join him in this engagement.
He took stock of his administration's achievements during his 18-month tenure as mayor before being ousted through a vote of confidence last year.
According to him, his administration improved the city's audit outcome and achieved the biggest improvement in financial sustainability of all metros in 2023.
They also devised a solution to the Hammanskraal water crisis, ensuring residents received clean water from taps instead of tankers.
Under his leadership, the city's executive appointed competent professionals to management positions and backed city manager Johann Mettler in his efforts to dismiss the Rooiwal Five, officials implicated in a tender scandal involving businessman Edwin Sodi.
He indicated that his administration also stood up to a violent strike, fighting for Tshwane residents who couldn't afford a R600 million salary increase for councillors and officials.
Brink highlighted other achievements, including budgeting for solar-powered streetlights and dedicated streetlight teams to combat crime, establishing community uplifting precincts, and improving waste removal services.
However, he noted that since the DA and its coalition partners were removed from office, Tshwane has fallen behind on revenue collection targets, resulting in an R857 million deficit at the end of the 2024/25 financial year.
Deputy Executive Mayor and MMC for Finance, Eugene Modise, recently said the city achieved a significant milestone by collecting R40.5 billion in cash revenue for the 2024/25 financial year, which is approximately 98% of its target of R41.3 billion.
Brink also criticised the current administration's decision to appeal a court ruling regarding the city cleansing levy, labelling it a waste of taxpayers' money.

The General stressed that the SAPS is mobilising all available resources to hunt down and bring the criminals to justice. Marikana resembles ANC's shameful legacy

Image: Leon Sadiki / Independent Newspapers Archives SATURDAY marked the 13th anniversary of the Marikana massacre, a commemoration that carries no significance for the ANC and its current President Cyril Ramaphosa. It's no wonder that South Africans no longer trust the party with the responsibility of leading this country. It cannot own up to the tragedy that befell the miners at the time they were demanding fair pay and improved working conditions, issues upon which the ANC's foundation was built. This year's commemoration came a day after Ramaphosa addressed the opening of the so-called National Dialogue in Pretoria on Friday. Among the important questions he said need to be answered is why were the majority of the black population still trapped in abject poverty. One assumes the president knows the answer to this question, but was just playing to the gallery. Perhaps the families of the slain Marikana miners would have all the answers to that question. Only if he had visited them and apologised for the massacre, as any caring government should have long done. They would have told him that their fathers, brothers, sons and husbands embarked on strike precisely because of the poverty they were subjected to despite the long hours underground. They would have also informed him that their children were robbed of their breadwinners by the very state that was supposed to protect them. They would have painted a picture of struggles they are confronted with to make ends meet in an economy that is characterised by the alarming cost of living. But these are the answers that Ramaphosa and his current ANC are not prepared for. They are the enablers of these struggles, directly or indirectly. That is why the Marikana massacre has become a taboo topic in the former liberation movement. Ramaphosa confirmed what many have long believed; that the ANC he leads is so detached from the realities confronting poor South Africans. If it was not, it would not waste millions from the public purse debating issues that all of us are aware of. Instead, that money could have been spent towards the education of the children of the miners the government killed in Marikana.

Ian Cameron, DA MPs injured in brutal ‘targeted' attack

The trio – which includes Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell – were ambushed after visiting a nearby SAPS training academy. IAN CAMERON AND OTHER DA MPS INJURED IN CAPE TOWN SMASH AND GRAB On Tuesday, 19 August, Ian Cameron and fellow DA MPs Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell escaped a smash-and-grab after conducting official duties. ADVERTISEMENT The trio were returning from a surprise inspection of the SAPS Philippi Training Academy when their vehicle was ambushed. A group of unknown suspects broke the window of their car with bricks and brutally assaulted Cameron and his colleagues. The quick-thinking Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson retaliated with his own firearm, firing shots at the suspects. A bloodied Cameron suffered broken teeth and required facial stitches. His colleagues sustained minor head and neck injuries. Ian Cameron believes that it was a targeted attack on himself. He posted on his X account: 'This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will not deter us. We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure accountability and safety. ADVERTISEMENT According to authorities, the motive for the attack is not yet known. 'OUT OF CONTROL CRIME' The DA condemned the attack, calling on police to increase their presence in high-crime areas. The party's Chief Whip, George Michalakis, told IOL: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. HELEN ZILLE'S NARROW ESCAPE Ian Cameron isn't the only DA member to fall victim to a brutal attack. In 2003, Helen Zille narrowly escaped death when her Corsa was shot at in an attempted hijacking in Khayelitsha. At the time of the attack, Helen was driving home one evening after doing constituency work in the informal settlement.
