Everything You Need To Know About The Handmaid's Tale Season Finale

Graziadaily28-05-2025
It's been eight-years since The Handmaid's Tale first graced our screens, and introduced us to the world of Gilead. Now, after six incredible seasons the much-loved show has come to an emotional end.
The TV series, which is an adaptation from a best-selling feminist book, Margaret Atwood's 1986 book of the same name, follows June, renamed Offred, as she navigates life in the totalitarian theocracy of Gilead, a former part of the United States. In Gilead, fertile women are forced into sex as Handmaids to have children for the elite.
The show's finale this week has got everyone talking. While many loose ends are tied together and relationships are fixed, but there is one moment fans were hoping for that never truly materialised. June is not definitively reunited with her daughter Hannah. In an interview, Yahlin Chang, who took over as co-showrunner for Season 6, explained this was because of the planned sequel, The Testaments, which is currently in the works with Hulu.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Chang said: 'Our hands were tied, unfortunately, and we could not bring June and Hannah together because of 'The Testaments,' which was something that we really struggled with. I struggled with, speaking for myself, not giving people what they wanted or what I wanted.'
The episode begins in the aftermath of episode nine, which saw Gilead's leadership destroyed and Massachusetts being freed. Next, the Mayday group focuses on liberating New York City.
In the final episode of The Handmaid's Tale, we see June released from Gilead, wrapping up loose ends as she prepared to find her daughter. We see June and Luke decide to end their relationship, but they both vow to stay part of the resistance movement. June also says goodbye to Serena, who will go and live in a refugee camp with Noah, her baby son, with Serena admitting she is 'ashamed' of the torture that she put June through. June finally accepts Serena's apology. 'I forgive you, Serena,' she says.
The episode ends with June revisiting her former home in old Waterford, where she first served as a handmaid. We see June start to write a book about her experiences, recording a tape recorder, with her reciting the first page of Margaret Atwood's novel.
'A chair. A table. A lamp. There's a window with white curtains, and the glass is shatterproof, but it isn't running away they're afraid of. A handmaid wouldn't get far. It's those other escapes. The ones you can open in yourself, given a cutting edge. Or a twisted sheet and a chandelier. I try not to think about those escapes. It's harder on ceremony days but thinking can hurt your chances. My name is Offred,' she said.
Fans of the show don't have to be too disappointed it's coming to an end. The Testaments is Margaret Atwood's 2019 sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, and takes place over a decade after the original story. The show, which is currently in its production stage with Hulu, is described by the platform as 'a coming-of-age story that finds a new generation of young women in Gilead grappling with the bleak future that awaits them.' It will pick up more than 15 years after the events of "The Handmaid's Tale."'
The show is set to document the journeys of Agnes and Hannah, June's daughter, and a fresh generation of young women. 'For these young women, growing up in Gilead is all they have ever known, having no tangible memories of the outside world prior to their indoctrination into this life,' Hulu said about the series. 'Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve.'

Sarah Michelle Gellar proves she still slays in first look at Buffy revamp

We finally have our first images of Sarah Michelle Gellar on set for the rebooted and retooled Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The actress, 48, will reprise her role as Buffy Summers for the upcoming relaunch of the iconic 90s teen drama. Its original series ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, and followed teenage vampire slayer Buffy as she battled bloodsuckers, demons, banshees and bad boyfriends alike. Over two decades later, a revival of the show is in the works with Hulu, with the actress also serving as executive producer. Featuring a new cast of fresh-faced vampire hunters, Gellar has promised that the show will 'try to find a balance between new and old characters' – with Buffy leading the charge. If this first glimpse of an all-grown-up Buffy is anything to go by, the fashionista vampire hunter still slays, all these years later. Pictured in Los Angeles, where both Buffy the Vampire Slayer and spin-off Angel were filmed, Buffy's new look is a striking departure from her teenage self. Once a trailblazer for 90s grunge and early 2000s fashion, middle-aged Buffy (feel old yet?) has swapped the leather jacket and leopard skin for a bright red top and matching skirt. She partnered this with a pair of crimson stilettos (with a heel high and sharp enough to pierce any vampire's heart) and a pink bag. Gellar officially shared the news that she was set to reprise her most famous role earlier this year. In a lengthy Instagram post, she explained that talks had begun three years ago, when 'dear friend and mentor' Gail Berman asked her to take a meeting with Eternals director Chloé Zhao. 'I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I've always done, I told Gail that I just didn't see a way for the show to exist again. We'd always been aligned on that, but this time I heard something different in her voice,' she explained. 'I eventually agreed to go (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty minute coffee quickly turned into a four hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us.' Sarah continued: 'While I didn't agree to anything at that meeting, I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation. These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea.' Promising that 'we will only make this show if we know we can do it right,' she assured fans: 'I will tell you that we are on the path there.' 'I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love 'Buffy' as much as I as much as you do. 'Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.' According to Deadline, series creator Joss Whedon will have no involvement in the reboot. While it remains to be seen which other members of the original cast will return, the show has already found its next generation of vampire hunters. In May, it was announced that Star Wars: Skeleton Crew star Ryan Kiera Armstrong had joined the cast as Sunnydale's newest Slayer. Sharing the news as she welcomed 15-year-old Ryan aboard, Gellar wrote: 'From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. 'To have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.' Earlier this month, Deadline reported that actors Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, Daniel Di Tomasso and Jack Cutmore-Scott had also joined the show as series regulars. The original show was beloved for its extended cast, which included Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg, Anthony Head as librarian Giles, and broody vampires Spike (James Marsters) and Angel (David Boreanaz). One tragic void left in the cast will be Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy's younger sister, Dawn. According to a source for the actress had been 'incredibly hopeful' that she might also reprise her role for the reboot. 'Sarah Michelle obviously felt that the reboot would need her as much as it needed Sarah,' an insider said, claiming that she had a 'pivotal role,' and that 'everyone was aware of her recent health struggles'. 'They were hoping that, perhaps, casting her as Sarah's sister in a reboot would help her overcome any issues she was having. She was not cast out by any means.' Trachtenberg died before this could come to pass, after being found in a luxury apartment complex in New York, aged 39. More Trending In tribute to her late co-star, Gellar shared a series of snaps from their time together. She captioned the post: 'Michelle, listen to me. Listen. I love you. I will always love you. The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it. I will be brave. I will live… for you.' View More » All seven seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer are currently streaming on ITVX. Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star accused of 'endangering' three-week-old baby after holding newborn while blindfolded for outrageous Nicki Minaj social media challenge

One of the stars of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has been accused of 'endangering' her baby after involving the newborn in a risky internet challenge inspired by Nicki Minaj 's High School music video. Mikayla Matthews, who lives in the US state of Utah, rose to fame as a 'Mormon influencer', amassing more than two million followers on TikTok even before she appeared on Hulu's reality TV show Mormon Wives in September 2024. The 25-year-old mother-of-four and husband Jace Terry welcomed the latest addition to their family, Lottie June, on July 17. In a short clip published on TikTok and Instagram earlier this week, Mikayla is seen attempting a viral challenge that requires someone to balance on the narrow heel of one of their stiletto shoes. Mikayla, however, complicated the already precarious challenge by attempting it from atop a platform while wearing a blindfold and cradling Lottie June in her arms - and has faced a backlash as a result. In the video captioned 'How it feels balancing postpartum and four kids with being the breadwinner', the influencer managed to balance for a few seconds before losing her footing and coming off the platform. While Mikayla does not fall to the ground - and little Lottie June remains peaceful in her arms - many viewers appeared to be alarmed by Mikayla's clip, with several criticising her for compromising her baby's safety. One person wrote: 'Why does everyone think this is ok… If she fell her newborn would be seriously hurt... Bizarre behaviour just for the clicks'. She was criticised for 'endangering her new born baby - but other social media comments were more divided Another added: 'Girl this ain't it. Don't put your newborn baby in a position to get hurt privately, or socially...' While a third weighed with: 'I'd rather see someone doing a dance about their baby in a hospital than endangering their baby in any way. Wtaf?!' A fourth social media user said: 'Don't you care for your baby's safety? He's two weeks old for G-ds sake. You are more concerned about a trend and likes than your baby. Outrageous!' And a fifth added: 'Someone just broke their spine doing this. Please be careful.' Others, however, were more forgiving, with one person praising the stunt as 'massively impressive'. Another joked: 'Please don't do this - the newborn will start expecting a new trick for every feed and you will have a mini diva on your hands!!' The Daily Mail has attempted to reach Mikayla's reps for comment. Only yesterday it was reported that a mother broke her spine after attempting the same challenge just weeks after giving birth. Mariana Barutkina, from Yekaterinburg in central Russia, was trying to film her first piece of content as an influencer when she suffered the painful injury while recreating a pose from the pop star's High School music video. Footage shows the 32-year-old beautician attempting to balance in sky-high stilettos on top of a jar of baby food, which had been placed on an upturned saucepan on her kitchen island. As she posed, gripping a friend's hand for balance, she suddenly loses control and tumbles backwards with a look of panic on her face. The clip, which has since gone viral, ends with Mariana sprawled on the floor - and later being diagnosed with a compression flexion fracture in her spine. She claimed she has now been told she must now wear a corset for three months. The so-called 'Stiletto Challenge' has taken social media by storm, with thousands of users attempting to copy a scene from a 2013 music video in which Minaj poses beside a swimming pool, crouched in heels with one leg crossed over the other. Recalling her horrifying ordeal, Ms Barutkina said she attempted the stunt just eight weeks after the birth of her son. 'I decided to start a blog, my first content shoot - and here I am leaving the doctor's with a diagnosis,' she said. The so-called 'Stiletto Challenge' has taken social media by storm, with thousands of users attempting to copy a scene from a 2013 music video in which Minaj poses beside a swimming pool, crouched in heels with one leg crossed over the other 'Irony? Karma? Or just life, which always tests our strength at the most unexpected moment.' The video has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times and prompted a wave of online criticism, with many questioning the mother's priorities. One viewer wrote: 'Irony? Karma? Stupidity and courage.' Another added: 'To live to 32, have children, but not gain intelligence - you have to try really hard.' A third even cruelly said: 'What kind of upbringing will a child receive from such a blogger?' Responding to the backlash, Mariana insisted her baby was not at risk. 'Because of one video, which was poorly filmed, I woke up as a popular person,' she said. 'People, thank you for the popularity, for your concerns and for your comments. 'For those who are worried about my child, I will also reassure you, he has two nannies and while I was filming, one of them was with him.' According to The Spinal Injuries Association, approximately 4,700 people are injured or diagnosed with a spinal cord injury every year in the UK. This equates to someone becoming paralysed every two hours. The organisation also estimates around 105,000 people across Britain are currently living with a spinal cord injury. Under NHS guidance, the majority of spinal fractures are treated conservatively - which means allowing the bone to heal naturally and therefore without a specific brace or the need for surgery. This healing process often takes three to four months but the majority of the pain settles by six to eight weeks. Medics suggest taking regular pain killers. When this isn't an option, some fractures may be helped by a supportive brace or even surgery.
