Everything You Need To Know About The Handmaid's Tale Season Finale

It's been eight-years since The Handmaid's Tale first graced our screens, and introduced us to the world of Gilead. Now, after six incredible seasons the much-loved show has come to an emotional end. The TV series, which is an adaptation from a best-selling feminist book, Margaret Atwood's 1986 book of the same name, follows June, renamed Offred, as she navigates life in the totalitarian theocracy of Gilead, a former part of the United States. In Gilead, fertile women are forced into sex as Handmaids to have children for the elite. The show's finale this week has got everyone talking. While many loose ends are tied together and relationships are fixed, but there is one moment fans were hoping for that never truly materialised. June is not definitively reunited with her daughter Hannah. In an interview, Yahlin Chang, who took over as co-showrunner for Season 6, explained this was because of the planned sequel, The Testaments, which is currently in the works with Hulu. In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Chang said: 'Our hands were tied, unfortunately, and we could not bring June and Hannah together because of 'The Testaments,' which was something that we really struggled with. I struggled with, speaking for myself, not giving people what they wanted or what I wanted.' The episode begins in the aftermath of episode nine, which saw Gilead's leadership destroyed and Massachusetts being freed. Next, the Mayday group focuses on liberating New York City. In the final episode of The Handmaid's Tale, we see June released from Gilead, wrapping up loose ends as she prepared to find her daughter. We see June and Luke decide to end their relationship, but they both vow to stay part of the resistance movement. June also says goodbye to Serena, who will go and live in a refugee camp with Noah, her baby son, with Serena admitting she is 'ashamed' of the torture that she put June through. June finally accepts Serena's apology. 'I forgive you, Serena,' she says. The episode ends with June revisiting her former home in old Waterford, where she first served as a handmaid. We see June start to write a book about her experiences, recording a tape recorder, with her reciting the first page of Margaret Atwood's novel. 'A chair. A table. A lamp. There's a window with white curtains, and the glass is shatterproof, but it isn't running away they're afraid of. A handmaid wouldn't get far. It's those other escapes. The ones you can open in yourself, given a cutting edge. Or a twisted sheet and a chandelier. I try not to think about those escapes. It's harder on ceremony days but thinking can hurt your chances. My name is Offred,' she said. Fans of the show don't have to be too disappointed it's coming to an end. The Testaments is Margaret Atwood's 2019 sequel to The Handmaid's Tale, and takes place over a decade after the original story. The show, which is currently in its production stage with Hulu, is described by the platform as 'a coming-of-age story that finds a new generation of young women in Gilead grappling with the bleak future that awaits them.' It will pick up more than 15 years after the events of "The Handmaid's Tale."' The show is set to document the journeys of Agnes and Hannah, June's daughter, and a fresh generation of young women. 'For these young women, growing up in Gilead is all they have ever known, having no tangible memories of the outside world prior to their indoctrination into this life,' Hulu said about the series. 'Facing the prospect of being married off and living a life of servitude, they will be forced to search for allies, both new and old, to help in their fight for freedom and the life they deserve.'

Does Alexis Bledel Return to The Handmaid's Tale in Series Finale? Here's Who Made Surprise Cameos

The series finale of The Handmaid's Tale, which aired on Tuesday, May 27, on Hulu, featured three surprise returns from original cast members. As fans said goodbye to the long-running dystopian drama after six seasons, they were treated to emotional cameos that brought back familiar faces: Alexis Bledel as Emily, Nina Kiri as Alma, and Bahia Watson as Brianna. Alexis Bledel Returns as Emily for One Final Scene Alexis Bledel, who played Emily, returned to The Handmaid's Tale after her exit at the end of season four. Viewers last heard about Emily in the season five premiere, when it was revealed she had gone back into Gilead to continue the resistance. In the series finale, it was revealed that Emily had become a Martha for a sympathetic Commander, which allowed her to stay in touch with her wife Sylvia and their son. She appeared in a quiet but powerful moment on the streets of Boston, now a free city, standing next to June. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Alexis said, 'It felt right to bring closure to Emily's journey and offer the audience a sense of completion. Bruce put together such a kind and talented group, and so many of the original crew were still there in season six.' Nina Kiri and Bahia Watson also returned to the finale as Alma and Brianna, two of the original handmaids who were close friends of June since the beginning of the series. Both actresses had previously appeared in seasons one through four and made brief appearances in season five. In the finale, their return came through a dream sequence, a scene where June imagined what Boston would be like if Gilead had never existed. In her vision, she was at karaoke with all of her friends, including Alma and Brianna. Series creator Bruce Miller explained that the karaoke scene was meant to be an emotional tribute to the characters' shared history. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said the scene was designed to show that the story wasn't entirely about horror. He stated that the dream sequence reflected the idea that, while Gilead brought immense pain, it also created meaningful relationships, like June's bond with Janine, that wouldn't have existed otherwise. The Testaments is already in development.

Fans are questioning the future of The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale is back for season 6 The Handmaid's Tale has recently graced our screens again with its sixth season. The latest instalment sees June Osborne, portrayed by Elisabeth Moss, once again attempting to rescue her daughter Hannah Bankole, played by Jordan Blake. In her quest, June allies herself with Mayday in a bid to overthrow the Commanders and liberate her child from the oppressive religious regime. The trailer hints at a rebellion led by the handmaids against their cruel oppressors, aiming to dismantle the system, reports the Mirror US. ‌ Fans are eager to know what lies ahead for The Handmaid's Tale and whether this is the final season. ‌ Is this the last season of The Handmaid's Tale? The straightforward answer is yes. Season six marks the end of The Handmaid's Tale journey. The 10-episode final season promises a grand conclusion to the Emmy Award-winning series. The show, inspired by Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel of the same name, has expanded the universe of Gilead far beyond the book's narrative. However, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end, and now The Handmaid's Tale returns for one last time. Former showrunner and executive producer Bruce Miller previously hinted that the TV adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale would stay true to the book's ending, suggesting that viewers already have an idea of how the series will conclude. ‌ Co-showrunner and executive producer Yahlin Chang spilled the beans to Variety about the final series of The Handmaid's Tale, saying: "We knew that this would be our very last chance to tell these stories with our beloved cast and our beloved characters, so it was definitely a now-or-never feeling." Chang also teased: "It's a wish fulfilment season, it's a season where we just want to be really rewarding and really satisfying." ‌ While The Handmaid's Tale is drawing to a close, fans need not despair as Bruce Miller takes the helm for the sequel series The Testaments, diving into Gilead's future. Margaret Atwood's 2019 novel The Testaments, which unravels the ultimate fate of Gilead, serves as the foundation for the new series. ‌ With cameras already rolling on The Testaments' first season, Miller shared insights with Entertainment Weekly, revealing: "[The Testaments] is about someone on the top in Gilead. This is about Hannah or Agnes, who's the daughter of a high commander who is the top of the food chain for women in Gilead, and it's still awful." Miller further clarified that the end of The Handmaid's Tale will stand on its own, independent of The Testaments, promising viewers unexpected twists as June's tale comes to an end. He revealed to the media: "I didn't want Testaments to dictate Handmaid's Tale, and I didn't want Handmaid's Tale to dictate Testaments. Some of the characters overlap, but it's about a different world."

The Handmaid's Tale fans predict Janine and Angela's escape but there's bad news for June

The Handmaid's Tale fans have predicted Janine's ending WARNING: Spoiler alert for Margaret Atwood's The Testaments As the final season of The Handmaid's Tale approaches, fans are on tenterhooks to find out if June Osborne (portrayed by Elisabeth Moss) will finally topple Gilead and rescue her daughter Hannah Bankole (Jordan Blake) from its clutches, reports the Mirror US. ‌ Speculation is rife among viewers about how the Hulu hit will wrap up, with theories swirling particularly around the fate of ex-handmaid Janine Lindo (Madeline Brewer). ‌ A Reddit user speculated: "Everyone's so focused on Hannah, getting her out, saving her, holding on to that hope. And I get it, we've all been rooting for June to reunite with her. But what if that's not where the real ending lies?". They went on to suggest: "What if the show is setting up them Angela and Janine to be the ones who make it out? Together. Safe. Whole. What if that's the happy ending we didn't even realize we needed? [sic]." Echoing the sentiment for a slice of joy, another chimed in: "I do think we need a win lol, we know the story as a whole isn't going to be happy, but one happy ending out of the years of trauma would be nice, and let's face it, it's not even that happy of an ending, she's taking a child that doesn't really know her as her mother, Janine is going to have to work through so much trauma, with one eye as a physical reminder [sic]." And a third fan expressed their hopes: "I would love this to happen. Janine is my absolute favorite and all I want is for her to have a happy ending." ‌ One fan chimed in: "This would be great. Especially since Naomi really doesn't act like she cares about Angela so we won't feel bad about taking her from them [sic]." Some viewers speculated that Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) might assist Janine and Angela. A viewer suggested that while a completely happy ending was unlikely, change was on the horizon: "Well, not whole bc Janine is missing an eye.... but seemingly Angela is being prepped for revolution by Comm. Lawrence so I'm not sure if I think she will be reunited with Janine yet... [sic]." ‌ Another fan noted: "I caught that! Lawrence did literally tell her "you're going to read this book all by yourself" which is very VERY against the law. He's already setting her up to not believe in Gilead's laws [sic]." A third fan theorised: "Lawrence is clearly going to always had subversive tendencies, he's not religious, and now he knows he's wanted on the wall. I'll be incredibly surprised if he doesn't leave Gilead taking Angela with him, whilst helping June to liberate Jezebel's." ‌ The Handmaid's Tale is anticipated to conclude with a bang, leading naturally into the forthcoming series The Testaments, based on the sequel novel to The Handmaid's Tale. The Testaments will introduce new characters striving to topple the religious government from within in the next phase of Gilead's history. ‌ Regrettably, as our readers are aware, Hannah won't be fleeing Gilead with her mother. Instead, it's Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) who will facilitate her escape and bring down the regime with incriminating information. It's highly probable that The Handmaid's Tale will conclude on a somewhat melancholic note, with some narratives neatly tied up, but June and Luke Bankole (O-T Fagbenle) rescuing Hannah won't be one of them.
