Little League World Series legend Mo'ne Davis throws first pitch to Nationals OF Robert Hassell III, whom she once struck out
The first pitch before the Washington Nationals' game on Thursday was a full circle moment for two Little League World Series opponent. The pitcher: Mo'ne Davis, one of the biggest viral sensations in the tournament's history. The catcher: Nationals outfielder Robert Hassell III, who faced Davis in 2014. And struck out against her. On his birthday. There were no hard feelings. To be fair to Hassell, he also got a hit off Davis when his Nashville team faced her Philadelphia team, but that was one of only two hits she allowed in an eight-strikeout shutout. That game made her the first female pitcher to earn a win in LLWS history. Hassell even pops up by name in the old SportsCenter highlight reel, complete with narration by Stuart Scott and a tweet from Kevin Durant. Hassell was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft six years later. He spoke about the experience earlier this year and remained impressed, noting he still follows her on Instagram: "It was crazy. She struck me out, it was on my birthday. Then I got a base hit off her. But yeah, the whole crowd screaming her name, we're really young, it was crazy, but it was really fun ... She was really good." For her part, Davis remembered her coach pointing out Hassell as a dangerous hitter when asked about him Thursday: "I remember before the game, going over the lineup with out coach, he's like 'Yeah, so, they have this kid named Robert, we have to watch out for him. He's a really good hitter, he might be their best hitter, so just be careful, he bats at the top of the lineup.' I'm like, 'Alright, OK.' "He stands close to the plate, I was like, 'Alright, I gotta really lock in here.' I don't want to hit him, get him on base, give them any type of momentum. I was really feeling everything that game. I ended up striking him out which was pretty cool, so I have bragging rights right now. He can't get his redemption back from me." Now 24 years old, Davis was at Nationals Park in connection to the tryouts for the Women's Pro Baseball League scheduled to take place at the same stadium next week. Since the 2014 LLWS, she has released a memoir, played softball at Hampton University and graduated from Columbia University with a master's in sports management. As for Hassell, his bat made him a top 100 prospect in the minor leagues. He was among the many young players the San Diego Padres sent to Washington in the blockbuster Juan Soto trade in 2022. He made his MLB debut this season and entered Thursday slashing. .250/.264/.356 with two homers in 106 plate appearances.

After Thursday morning's Round of 32, winners were back on the course in the afternoon battling in the Round of 16, and eight golfers punched their ticket into the quarterfinals, which begin Friday afternoon. Among those advancing to the quarterfinals include a local favorite with incredible crowd support, John Daly II and a Cinderella story in the making. No. 49 Niall Shiels Donegan Shiels Donegan, the North Carolina transfer who lives about an hour north of Olympic Club, took out medalist Preston Stout 1 up on Thursday afternoon to move into the quarterfinals. He also has the biggest crowd support this week. No. 56 Jacob Modleski Modleski, who was on the bubble for the U.S. Walker Cup team coming into the week, is into the quarters after holding off Paul Chang 2 up. In the 18 holes the two played, they only tied two of them. No. 61 Jimmy Abdo The Cinderella run continues for Abdo. The Division III college product from Gustavus Adolphus in Minnesota who's ranked 4,292 in WAGR is moving on after a thrilling run in his first U.S. Amateur. No. 37 Jackson Herrington No. 63 Mason Howell Howell, the U.S. Junior Am medalist, thought a bogey on the second playoff hole Wednesday was his undoing. Now, he has taken down Tommy Morrison, Ben James and Max Herendeen en route to the quarters. No. 26 John Daly II Little John is on a roll. He wins yet again, controlling his match against reigning Phil Mickelson Award winner Daniel Bennett from the start, and Daly is into the quarterfinals. No. 3 Miles Russell The top-ranked junior in the world is into the quarterfinals at his second USGA event this year. Russell, 16, tops Mahanth Chirravuri 2 and 1 after burying a long birdie putt on the 17th hole to win. No. 3 Eric Lee Eric Lee won the match 1 up on the 18th hole after Josh Duangmanee lost his tee shot on the 18th and then conceded. It's the second time in the last three months Lee has beat Duangmanee in match play, also at the NCAA Championship. Keith scores on sacrifice fly in 11th, Tigers rally to top Twins 4-3
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Colt Keith scored on Gleyber Torres' sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Detroit Tigers overcame an early three-run deficit to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 on Thursday night. Riley Greene hit his team-leading 28th home run to help Detroit win for the fourth time in five games and fifth in seven. Starting at second base in the 11th inning, Keith advanced to third on a wild pitch by Erasmo Ramírez (0-1) and scored on a Torres' sacrifice fly. Rafael Montero (1-1) got the final four outs for the Tigers. Detroit starter Tarik Skubal overcame a shaky third inning to get through seven innings, allowing three runs. He had only three strikeouts. When he last faced the Twins on June 29, he struck out 13 in seven innings. Edouard Julien homered before Ryan Jeffers and Luke Keaschall had RBIs in a three-run Minnesota third, but Skubal retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced. After starter Bailey Ober got two quick outs in the fourth, Kerry Carpenter doubled and Greene's home run cut the Detroit deficit to 3-2. Key moment Minnesota's Alan Roden tried to score from third with one out in the 10th inning on a half-swing by Austin Martin, but was thrown out at the plate by charging first baseman Spencer Torkelson, a call upheld by video review. Key stat Detroit has won 11 of its past 17 games since July 27 after losing 12 of 13 and having its division lead shrink from 14 to seven games.
