Mohamed Salah and Mariona Caldentey named PFA players of year

The PFA crown complements the record-equalling third Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award picked up earlier in the year.
PFA Women's Player of the Year Caldentey, 29, moved to Arsenal last summer and scored 19 goals in all competitions, including eight on the Gunners' way to lifting the Champions League with a victory in the final against her former club Barcelona.
Olivia Smith recently joined Caldentey at Arsenal in a world-record deal and has been named PFA Women's Young Player of the Year following her superb season at Liverpool.
Morgan Rogers has scooped the PFA Men's Young Player of the Year award following a brilliant campaign that saw the Aston Villa attacking midfielder make his England breakthrough.

Salah is joined in the 2024/25 PFA Premier League Team of the Year by Liverpool team-mates Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.
Milos Kerkez, who moved to Anfield from Bournemouth in the summer, is also selected, as are the Arsenal trio of William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Declan Rice.
Matz Sels and Chris Wood are recognised for their fine campaigns at Nottingham Forest, while unsettled striker Alexander Isak has been included in recognition of his excellent form at Newcastle last term.
Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes missed out on the XI despite being shortlisted for the Player of the Year award.
The PFA Women's Super League Team of the Year side includes two players from champions Chelsea, Erin Cuthbert and Millie Bright.

Caldentey, Alessia Russo, Emily Fox and Kim Little are selected, as are Manchester City pair Yui Hasegawa and Mary Fowler and the Manchester United trio of Phallon Tullis-Joyce, Maya Le Tissier and Jayde Riviere.
James Trafford, now of Manchester City, has become the first goalkeeper to be named Championship Player of the Year following his brilliant performances between the sticks during Burnley's promotion campaign.
Richard Kone's 21-goal haul for Wycombe in his first full season at professional level saw the 22-year-old, who last week signed for QPR, named League One Player of the Year.
Bromley striker Michael Cheek's impressive first season in the EFL, in which he scored 25 league goals for the promoted side, saw him awarded the League Two Player of the Year trophy.

Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers has been crowned the 2024/25 PFA's Young Player of the Year. He was recognised at the annual PFA Awards in Manchester on Tuesday evening, taking home the prestigious PFA prize. The attacking midfielder was a key cornerstone of Villa's side, as a sixth-placed finish secured European football for a third year running. Having missed just one Premier League match all season through suspension, Rogers made 37 appearances in the league, all of which being starts, playing a total of 3,129 minutes. The England international was voted for the award by his peers after a campaign which saw him rack up 18 goal contributions in 37 Premier League outings throughout 2024/25. Rogers was present alongside club officials at the star-studded ceremony at the Manchester Opera House, where he accepted the award up on stage. Rogers joined Aston Villa in February 2024, after completing a deadline-day move from Middlesbrough. Following his arrival at Villa Park, Rogers made his debut in a 5-0 victory at Sheffield United before scoring his first goal in claret and blue against Brentford in April. Further stellar performances continued at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, resulting in a maiden call-up to England's senior squad for November's international fixtures, where he made his Three Lions debut against Greece. The following week, Rogers was rewarded with a new contract at the club until 2030. Rogers' superb 2024/25 campaign was his first for Villa in the top flight and included a memorable hat-trick in the club's 4-2 UEFA Champions League triumph over Celtic.

Alexander Isak saga: Newcastle respond to wantaway striker's social media post
Newcastle have insisted Alexander Isak was never told he could leave this summer in response to the wantaway striker's social media post. Isak broke his silence amid his attempts to force a move out of Newcastle by accusing the club of breaking promises in a lengthy statement on Instagram. But the club responded late on Tuesday night to say they were disappointed at the Sweden international's message, while leaving the door open for the 25-year-old to return to the fold. A club statement read: 'We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. 'We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. 'As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met. 'This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.' Isak, who has been the subject of a rejected bid from Liverpool, was not involved in Newcastle's Premier League opener on Saturday as they failed to score in a goalless draw at Aston Villa, having been training alone after refusing to play in some pre-season matches. On Tuesday he was named in the PFA Premier League team of the season and used a post on Instagram expressing his gratitude to address his situation. 'I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,' Isak wrote. 'That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. 'The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To act now as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.' Liverpool had a bid reportedly worth £110million plus add-ons rejected by Newcastle at the start of August but have retained an interest in the player despite signing Hugo Ekitike – a forward who was also targeted by Newcastle. Newcastle are said to value Isak at £150million, and would only consider a sale if they have signed a replacement. Isak, who returned to training at Newcastle on August 4, has three years remaining on his contract at St James' Park, and it was understood he would be fined if he missed competitive matches as a result of his desire to leave. After Saturday's match at Villa, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said 'other people are dealing with that issue'. Howe has continued to express his hope that Isak stays at the club.

Rangers boss Russell Martin not giving up hope on Champions League hopes
Russell Martin believes Rangers can still get through their Champions League play-off tie despite the 3-1 defeat by Club Brugge at Ibrox. In a nightmare first 20 minutes, goals from Romeo Vermant – following some calamitous defending by Gers defender Nasser Djiga – Jorne Spileers and Brandon Mechele had the visitors 3-0 up and Ibrox in an uproar. Brazilian striker Danilo pulled a goal back four minutes after the break and the home side rallied, but the Belgian outfit stood firm and boos greeted the players at the end. The second leg is in Belgium next Wednesday but against the evidence of the first half at Ibrox, Martin remains optimistic. 'We conceded a crazy goal and didn't respond to it anywhere well enough,' he said. 'We then conceded a goal from a corner which is really frustrating. 'And then it becomes so difficult and then after that, we make decisions based on desperation and anxiety, jump when we shouldn't, get played around and so the game plan went out the window at that point. 'And we needed a moment to calm down and refocus but it was difficult and we didn't respond well as a club to that because we were hurt early in the game. 'The lads showed amazing resilience in the second half, the fans were amazing the second half, considering the disappointment of the first half. 'And the tie is still open and the players feel that, they really feel that. 'I am proud of them and the first half was as hard as it will ever be and how they got through that, some of the guys who have had a tough start here, the way they played tonight, they will grow from that and we will as a group. 'So the tie is still game on so I am excited about that opportunity. 'My message to supporters is the team needs them. Whatever happens, we need them. We have to give them enough to believe in their team. 'Everyone's entitled to their opinions but we need everyone to grow together if we want to be successful.' Club Brugge boss Nicky Hayen also insisted the tie was far from over. He said: 'We knew where the spaces were. We played here in the friendly game (pre-season), and we showed also in that first half that if our players play at their best level, that they can hurt a lot of teams. 'We said before the game, OK, the atmosphere is incredible, but you have to embrace the atmosphere and not fight against it, and this is what they did in the first seven minutes perfectly, and this is the way how you can get the silence into a stadium. 'But as long as there is still 90 minutes to play, everything is possible. 'We don't forget that we are 2-0 down against Salzburg also. So we have to be smart, we have to be intelligent, play our best football, like in the first half.'
