SIU clears officer of non-lethal firearm shooting
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined that an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) did not commit a criminal offence when he shot a non-lethal firearm at a man in April.
The SIU report, Director Joseph Martino said he 'found no reasonable grounds' to believe the officer was out of line when he shot the 60-year-old man who had been setting houses on fire in Gravenhurst April 4.
The man was not injured.
OPP officers were dispatched to a residential area following calls to police from several homeowners reporting the man set fire to a number of residences.
The officer, having reason to believe the man had a knife, shot the man with an Anti-riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) during his arrest.
Martino found the use of the ARWEN made sense when the man refused to peacefully surrender and began to close the distance with the officers.

This is in connection with the incident that took place on August 1, when OPP officers responded to reports of gunfire at a home on Beatrice Town Line Road. When police arrived shortly after 8 p.m., they found a man dead outside of the home, which was fully engulfed in flames. Police announced another grim discovery on the property on Saturday, August 2. 'The next day, two additional deceased were found inside the residence,' said Joe Brisebois media coordinator for the central region for OPP. Sergeant Joe Brisebois said a shelter-in-place order was issued while police searched for a suspect. 'At that point, we started looking for a potential shooter, and a shelter-in-place was put in effect until approximately 1:45 a.m. that morning,' said Brisebois. 'Since then, Mitchell Gray, 29 years old, of Bracebridge, was wanted for murder.' Gray was described as a white male, 5′8″ tall, with light brown hair and facial hair. Police said they did not make any direct contact with the accused since August 1. The investigation remains ongoing by the Bracebridge OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Coroner, the OFPS and the Office of the Fire Marshal. Listowel driver clocked at more than 70 km/h over the speed limit: police
A driver from Listowel will have to find a new way to get around for a while after the Ontario Provincial Police said he was caught going 70 km/h over the speed limit. Officers with the Wellington County OPP said they saw the vehicle travelling on Wellington Road 9 within Mapleton Township on Tuesday around 2:30 a.m. The speed limit along that stretch of road is typically 80 km/h, unless otherwise posted. A 66-year-old from Listowel was charged with stunt driving – excessive speed. Their vehicle has been impounded for 14 days and their driver's licence has been suspended for 30 days.

OPP seeking suspects in Hawkesbury arson investigation
OPP are looking for two suspects in a reported arson at a pizzeria in Hawkesbury on Aug. 4, 2025. (OPP/handout) Ontario Provincial Police are asking for the public's help locating suspects following a fire at a local pizzeria. Police say officers were called to a restaurant on James Street at around 11:30 p.m. Monday on reports of an arson. Smoke and flames were visible inside the restaurant when police arrived. Witnesses told police they saw two men start the fire and then walk away. It's believed two other men spotted in a white Chevrolet Malibu might also be involved. The suspected arsonists are described by police only as 'tall and thin.' They were wearing black sweaters at the time of the incident, and one had a medical-style mask on. 'We know this photo is dark and low rez, but it could spark someone's attention,' police said of a photo that was distributed on social media.
