In a 1st, Haryana top cop launches podcast to discuss state's war on drugs
The podcast, led personally by the DGP, is envisioned as a bridge between the public and the police, offering authentic, unfiltered narratives from ground operatives who are at the heart of this critical enforcement effort. The DGP hosted two deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) from HSNCB, engaging them in an insightful conversation on two of the most pressing challenges confronting the anti-drug drive in Haryana — the rising misuse of pharmaceutical drugs as affordable alternatives to hard narcotics, and the complex network of inter-state drug trafficking.
Through this candid and deeply informed dialogue, the DGP offered listeners a rare glimpse into the operational realities of drug enforcement — the patterns, tactics, and human costs that rarely make it into conventional news reports.
One segment of the podcast focused on the disturbing rise in abuse of pharmaceutical drugs such as Tramadol, Tapentadol, Alprazolam, and codeine-based syrups — substances that are legal under medical supervision but are increasingly being misused as substitutes for costlier and harder-to-source drugs like heroin and opium.
The DSP in charge of the HSNCB's pharmaceutical enforcement wing explained how peddlers have begun exploiting legal loopholes and vulnerable supply chains to make these drugs available on the black market.
"These tablets are cheap, easy to conceal, and often fly under the radar," he said, adding that teenagers and first-time users are particularly vulnerable due to the low cost and easy availability. "The damage these pharma drugs do — to health, families, and futures — is just as devastating," he said.
The second half of the podcast turned the spotlight on inter-state drug trafficking — a key concern for Haryana given its strategic location. The DGP spoke with a DSP who was instrumental in tracking and intercepting smuggling routes from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi. The officer narrated several operations in which large consignments of commercial quantity narcotics were seized based on actionable intelligence, surveillance technology, and inter-agency coordination.
"Inter-state trafficking is no longer just about physical movement," the officer explained. "It's a sophisticated web involving digital payments, SIM box frauds, and fake identities. We're constantly evolving to stay ahead."

A man arrested for sexual assault was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district last week, with his family now alleging he was killed in custody and demanding a 'thorough' probe. The body of 30-year-old Aftab Ansari was found near the bank of Damodar river on July 26 — three days after he was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a tribal woman. According to the police, a right-wing outfit had 'handed over' the suspect to them on July 23 and that he had broken out of jail three days later. The police eventually found him on the riverbank about 20 km from the district headquarters, Ramgarh SP Ajay Kumar said. 'On July 23, we arrested Aftab and took him to the hospital. On July 24, around 12:15 PM, he escaped from the police station. CCTV footage shows him fleeing, but no immediate search was carried out by the officers,' the officer said, adding that five people – two policemen and two home guards among them – had been suspended. But the family, however, claims that outfit had assaulted Aftab at the garment shop he worked in on July 23 before handing him to the police. They have also alleged that the outfit was connected to his death. Based on their complaint, the police have named 12 people from the outfit in the FIR filed on July 26. Of these, one person has been arrested. 'He was in custody, and later a video surfaced showing him 'escaping' the police station. But no one escapes a police station like that. We believe he was forced to flee as part of a cover-up,' his brother Altaf alleged. Meanwhile, Aftab's wife Saleha alleges a 'conspiracy between police and the outfit'. But the police deny the allegations, admitting only to 'negligence'. 'We should have secured him properly in the lock-up. But he was seen walking out in a healthy condition. He fled from custody, and later died. That doesn't qualify as custodial death,' the SP said, adding that the post-mortem showed no injury marks. The issue took a political turn after a tweet by BJP leader Babulal Marandi on July 24 alleging 'religious conversion' in the case. 'A man named Aftab Ansari raped her and also forced her to convert to Islam by making a video… This is a blot on the law-and-order situation under the Hemant government. @HemantSorenJMM Sir, why are criminals so emboldened during your rule?' he tweeted. After the body was found, Health Minister Irfan Ansari alleged that the BJP leader's 'provocative tweets and statements created pressure on the police, poisoned the atmosphere, and ultimately led to Aftab's death'. 'This killing did not happen in police custody, it happened under the shadow of the BJP's ideology,' he said. The minister added that he had informed the chief minister and had ordered the DGP to conduct a 'high-level investigation'. He said: 'Whoever is responsible for Aftab's death, whether wearing a uniform or saffron clothes, must face punishment. This fight is no longer just for justice; it is to protect humanity'. In response to the minister's allegation, Marandi told The Indian Express that he had tweeted 'after receiving a complaint from the girl's family' and that tweet was to 'ensure action against the accused'. HC notice to Hry, Karnal police on plea against police inaction in loan app sextortion case
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has issued a notice to the Haryana govt and the Karnal police on a petition filed by a Karnal woman alleging victimisation by cyber sextortion and subsequent police misconduct in a case linked to a fraudulent loan application. The petitioner sought the quashing of a police challan dated Aug 4, 2023, which, she alleges, falsely concludes the case as "untraced" despite substantial evidence and prior involvement of the accused with the police. The woman's ordeal began in 2021 when she responded to an Instagram advertisement for instant loans. After downloading a mobile loan application from the Google Play Store, the app accessed her contact list and required personal identification, including her Aadhaar card, PAN card, and a photograph, according to the woman. Although she initially received and repaid a small loan, she soon became a victim of blackmail. The accused allegedly morphed her uploaded photograph to create obscene images and threatened to circulate them among her contacts unless she paid large sums of money. Out of fear and humiliation, Poonam reportedly paid between Rs 25–30 lakh to the fraudsters between May 2021 and Feb 2022. Following this, the couple lodged a complaint at the cyber crime police station in Karnal, leading to an FIR on Sept 27, 2022, under various sections of the Information Technology Act and Indian Penal Code. The petition alleges that the police failed to act effectively. Instead of arresting the accused, the police allegedly brokered a settlement between the parties and even took Rs 5 lakh from the money the accused returned to Poonam. According to her, the accused visited the police station on two occasions and transferred Rs 30 lakh to her account as part of a supposed settlement — an interaction witnessed and facilitated by the police. Despite this, the Karnal police filed a closure report (challan) on Aug 4, 2023, stating the accused were untraceable and omitting any mention of the money repaid or the affidavits of compromise signed by the petitioner and her husband, the petitioner submitted. In her plea, she sought the quashing of the Aug 4, 2023, challan submitted by the in-charge of cyber crime police station, Karnal, and to transfer the investigation to an independent agency — either the crime branch, CBI, or a district police unit other than Karnal — under the supervision of the DGP, Haryana. Director General's office makes online courses mandatory for all ranks in Maharashtra Police
Chhatrapati Sambhajiagar: The office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Maharashtra, has mandated that all police personnel — from constables and ministerial staff to senior officers — complete five specified online courses on the Govt of India's iGOT Karmayogi portal. Senior officers said directives have been issued to every police unit head to monitor and ensure compliance. The move is expected to standardise knowledge across ranks, promote accountability, and improve service delivery. A circular issued by the DGP's office directs all police unit heads and branch in-charges to ensure that 100% of the officers and personnel under their command register on the portal and successfully complete the courses assigned to their respective ranks within the stipulated times. "The courses are very easy to understand, and the police personnel can complete these courses even by accessing them through their mobile phones," said a senior police officer. The initiative is part of the ongoing push to modernise policing skills and enhance administrative efficiency through digital training. According to the latest directive, constables, head constables, and assistant sub-inspectors (PC/HC/ASI) must complete modules such as night patrolling, staying safe in cyberspace, dos and don'ts for govt employees, and effective ways of remaining stress-free. Sub-inspector, assistant inspector, and inspector-rank officers have been assigned technical courses, including forensic science for investigation, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, interrogation techniques, murder case investigation, and night patrolling. According to the directive, deputy superintendent of police or the assistant commissioner of police and above rank officers must undergo modules on soft skills and communication skills, negotiation skills, investigation of terror cases, yoga break at the workplace, and departmental inquiry procedures. Ministerial staff are required to finish courses on basic principles of management in govt services, dos and don'ts for govt employees, stress management at the workplace, and yoga break at the workplace. Training durations range from 27 minutes to over 2 hours, with courses available in Marathi, Hindi, and English, depending on the content and target audience. Authorities clarified these are among the long list of online courses that were designed while keeping in mind the requirements of modern-day policing.
