2025 Virginia Tech Football Predictions: Hokies Ranked 57th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where Virginia Tech lands in my Ultimate 136.
Team ranking: 57
Last year's ranking: 58
Top player: QB Kyron Drones: Rushed for 176 yards in the 2023 Military Bowl, setting a school record; last season he became the first player in VT history to record a pass, rushing, and receiving TD all in the same game.

RJ's take: It's been simple to write off the Hokies in the Brent Pry era because they haven't beaten any of their non-conference Power 4 foes — 0-6. Rutgers made its Big Ten bones with back-to-back wins against Virginia Tech the last two years, which corresponded with the first set of back-to-back winning seasons Rutgers has enjoyed in the B1G.

And Virginia Tech is just 10-13 in the ACC since 2022. But they've been close losses too. Five of their losses came by one score in 2024. Pry needs a second winning season in four years, or this could be his last.

College Football Tradition Meets Transition: The Rocky Road for College Football's Biggest Brands Updated Aug. 11, 2025 8:21 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The impact of conference realignment over the past 15 years could easily fill several volumes of Encyclopedia Britannica. But as college football continues to evolve at a rapid pace, some of the sport's most recognizable programs are showing signs of strain after switching leagues. Since the early 1970s, Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, Ohio State and Nebraska have been standard-bearers for excellence in the sport. The three that have changed conferences since 2011 — Oklahoma, USC and Nebraska — have struggled to regain their footing since making the move. Neither USC nor Nebraska appeared in this season's AP Top 25 or Coaches Poll. Oklahoma was ranked No. 18 in Monday's AP preseason poll (No. 10 in my "Ultimate 136") but was left out of the Coaches Poll for the first time since 1999. That means 62 FBS coaches came to the conclusion that none of these blue-blood programs are among the 25 best — something that would have felt unthinkable just 15 years ago. [ Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here ] Since 1950, Alabama has won 14 (claimed) national titles and seen four players win the Heisman Memorial Trophy; USC has won seven national titles and been home to eight Heisman winners; Ohio State has won eight national titles, produced six Heisman winners, and is home to the only two-time Heisman winner in the history of the sport; Nebraska has won five national titles and counts three Heisman winners. ADVERTISEMENT Two of those programs — Ohio State and Alabama—have remained members of their respective leagues, the Big Ten and SEC, for over a century. And their decision not to change conferences or even venture toward independence has paid dividends in this new era of college football where we've seen the collapse of the Pac-12 Conference, the expansion of the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12, and 49 programs changing their conference allegiance. Nebraska's move to the Big Ten hasn't lived up to Huskers fans' standards, with just one 10-win season and eight losing seasons as a conference member. It's a stark contrast from the Huskers' Big 8 and Big 12 years, where, when paired with Oklahoma in the same league, Nebraska could be counted on to win at least nine games and a national title every eight years from 1962 to 2002. USC's first season in the Big Ten began with it ranked inside the top 25 and ended with a rather deflating 7-6 record. While the program had been slipping — everything is downhill when you win 11 or more games for six straight years from 2002 to 2008 and two national titles — not enough media members or coaches believe Lincoln Riley has done enough to warrant inclusion into the preseason top 25. Oklahoma's first season in the SEC began with it ranked inside the top 20 and ended with just the second losing season in Norman since 1998. What's more is, the Sooners have won 10 or more games 18 times from 2000 to 2021. For Brent Venables, who is responsible for the only two losing seasons Oklahoma has suffered in the 21st century, this season could not be more important. If Oklahoma in the SEC feels a lot like Lewis Hamilton's move from Mercedes to Ferrari, that's because it is. Both can't figure out how to win in the new digs, and both are searching for an identity that was once as sturdy as a 1,0000-year-old tree. Among the three aforementioned teams, Oklahoma is not only the program with the biggest target on its back, but also the one with the toughest schedule: No. 1 Texas, No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 LSU, No. 13 South Carolina, No. 14 Michigan, No. 21 Ole Miss and No. 24 Tennessee are lined up and ready to pour it all on OU. When the Sooners announced their move to the SEC, most Oklahoma fans celebrated. The athletic department even threw an "SEC Day" to commemorate the move because, well, the grass must just be greener in the SEC. It turns out that even if it's green — mo' money, mo' money, mo' — it still has to get cut. And, so far, Oklahoma can't get it done. Nebraska, a program that reached its first bowl game in eight years last season, the longest bowl brought in program history, is also trying to climb back up the mountain it once ruled with a fan base as rabid and switched on as any. Rather than learn from Nebraska, Oklahoma and USC might come to find out they should've paid closer attention. Know your roots. Respect them. College Football AP Top 25: Texas No. 1 In Preseason Poll, Setting Up Top-3 Matchup vs. Ohio State Updated Aug. 11, 2025 12:19 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link When Texas and Ohio State meet in Columbus on Aug. 30 (noon ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app), it'll likely be for the No. 1 ranking in the nation. Texas received the No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 college football preseason poll for the 2025 season, which was unveiled on Monday. Ohio State, meanwhile, received the No. 3 ranking, nearly giving us the first-ever Week 1 matchup between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation in the history of the AP poll. Penn State was ranked second between Texas and Ohio State. [Related: RJ Young's Ultimate 136 college football rankings] Texas received its No. 1 ranking after two appearances in the College Football Playoff semifinals in each of the last two years, earning 25 of the 65 first-place votes. It also received the No. 1 ranking as Arch Manning is set to take over at quarterback for the 2025 season. Manning, a redshirt sophomore, sat behind Quinn Ewers the last two seasons, but briefly played in 2024, recording 939 passing yards, two interceptions, 108 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns. As for Ohio State, it received the No. 3 overall ranking after winning its first national championship under head coach Ryan Day last season. Fourteen players from that team were selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, including quarterback Will Howard and wide receiver Emeka Egbuka. But the Buckeyes arguably have the two best players in college football entering 2025, with wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and safety Caleb Downs returning. Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz are battling for the starting quarterback job. Ohio State got 11 first-place votes. Penn State nearly got the No. 1 overall ranking. It earned 23 first-place votes and was only five points shy of Texas' point total. The Nittany Lions return quarterback Drew Allar, along with running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, helping them receive their highest ranking a AP Top 25 preseason poll since 1997. ADVERTISEMENT Clemson, which returns quarterback Cade Klubnik and several stars on defense, earned the No. 4 ranking, receiving four first-place votes. Georgia rounds out the top five, receiving one first-place vote. Notre Dame, Oregon (which got the final first-place vote), Alabama, LSU and Miami round out the top 10. The SEC leads all conferences with 10 teams in the preseason Top 25, most ever by a conference and one more than a year ago. The SEC has four teams in the top 10 for the second straight year. The Big Ten, which has won the last two national championships, has two of the top three teams in the poll for the third straight year and six in the Top 25 for the third year in a row. Four Big 12 teams are ranked, with defending conference champion Arizona State the highest at No. 11. The Atlantic Coast Conference has three. Poll nuggets Texas will try to become the 12th team to start and finish No. 1 since the AP preseason poll debuted in 1950. The last team to do it was Alabama in 2017. Notre Dame is in the preseason top 10 for the third time in four years. The Fighting Irish will have a new quarterback, CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey. The two played a combined eight snaps last season as Notre Dame went all the way to the CFP title game won by Ohio State. With Boise State at No. 25, all 12 teams in the 2024 College Football Playoff are ranked in the preseason. The Mountain West's Broncos are the first team from a Group of Five conference to crack the preseason Top 25 since Tulane was No. 24 in 2023. No. 16 SMU, which returns quarterback Kevin Jennings from its CFP team, is in the preseason Top 25 for the first time in 40 years. The 1985 team was No. 3 and finished 6-5 and unranked. Intra-state rivalry: Here's how to buy East Carolina vs. NC State football tickets
College football is almost back, and with it, some of the top rivalries. It's one of the things that makes the NCAA so fun to watch. The rivalries are kicking off early with East Carolina vs. NC State. The Wolfpack didn't have a great 2024-25 bid, finishing in 10th place in the ACC. East Carolina performed slightly better, coming in fifth in the AAC. But they ended up facing each other in the Military Bowl, where the Pirates came out on top.
