NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday (June 21) that Yoga gives the world the direction of peace at a time when it is witnessing conflicts, unrest and instability.
On the 11th International Day of Yoga, he urged the international community to let this Yoga Day mark the beginning of yoga for humanity 2.0 where inner peace becomes global policy.
The Prime Minister was addressing the national event to mark the 11th International Day of Yoga in Visakhapatnam.
The Prime Minister, who performed the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) along with over three lakh people at RK Beach, emphasised the importance of yoga in ensuring happiness and peace.
He believes that yoga can bring peace by leading the world from clash to cooperation and tension to resolution.
'Unfortunately, today the entire world is going through tension and unrest. Instability has been increasing in many regions. In such times, yoga gives us the direction of peace. yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, to balance, and become whole again,' he said.
PM Modi stated that yoga should not be mere personal practice but become the medium of global partnership where every country and society make yoga part of their life and public policy.
Congratulating people across the world on 11th International Day of Yoga, the Prime Minister said that yoga isn't just an exercise but it is a way of life.
'Yoga in simple terms means to connect. It has connected the world,' he said.
He recalled that in 2014 when India moved a resolution in the United Nations to celebrate June 21 as the International Yoga Day, 175 countries supported the resolution in a short time.
'This support was not just for a resolution but it was the collective effort of the entire world for the well-being of humanity,' he said.
"After 11 years, we can now see that yoga has become a part of the lifestyle of crores of people around the world…Whether it's the steps of the Opera House, the peak of Mount Everest, or the vastness of the sea, every place echoes the same message: Yoga is for everyone and belongs to all. Yoga is for everyone, beyond boundaries, backgrounds, age or ability," he added.
PM Modi said that he feels proud to see Divyang friends study Yoga Shastras in Braille, scientists practice yoga in space and young friends participate in the Yoga Olympiads in villages. He pointed out that yoga is also being performed on the Navy ships off Visakhapatnam coast.
The Prime Minister underlined the spirit of oneness behind yoga. "The theme for this year's International Day of Yoga is 'Yoga For One Earth, For One Health'.
"This theme reflects a deep truth: The health of every entity on Earth is interconnected.
"Human well-being depends on the health of the soil that grows our food, the rivers that give us water, the health of the animals that share our ecosystems, and the plants that nourish us.
"Yoga awakens us to this interconnectedness, leads us on a journey towards oneness with the world, and teaches us that we are not isolated individuals but part of nature."

Modi: Enough sabre-rattling

Clarion call: Modi addressing the nation during Independence Day celebrations at the historic Red Fort in Delhi. — Reuters/Bloomberg Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned Pakistan that India will punish its neighbour if there are future attacks on India as he marked 78 years of independence from British colonial rule. Modi's remarks yesterday come three months after nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan engaged in four days of intense fighting, their worst clash in decades. Modi addressed the country from New Delhi's 17th-century, Mughal-era Red Fort, where he said he would not tolerate what he called Islamabad's 'nuclear blackmail'. 'India has decided that it will not tolerate nuclear threats. For a long time, nuclear blackmail had been going on. But this blackmail will not be tolerated now.' Pakistan previously has rejected India's statements about nuclear blackmail as provocative and inflammatory. India celebrates its Independence Day just one day after Pakistan. The two states came into existence as a result of the bloody partition of British India in 1947. The process sparked some of the worst communal violence the world has seen and left hundreds of thousands dead. It triggered one of the largest human migrations in history; some 12 million people fled their homes. India and Pakistan exchanged tit-for-tat military strikes in May that brought them to the brink of a war. The fighting between the two countries was sparked by an April massacre by gunmen in Indian-controlled Kashmir that killed 26 people, mostly Hindu tourists. India blamed the attack on Pakistan-backed insurgents. Islamabad denied responsibility or any links while calling for a neutral investigation. Days after the massacre, India launched strikes on Pakistan and said it had hit nine insurgent 'infrastructure' sites. Pakistan responded by sending waves of drones into India, as well as missile and artillery bombardments. Dozens of people were killed on both sides until a ceasefire was reached May 10 after US mediation. Pakistan immediately claimed it shot down six Indian aircraft during the clashes. India acknowledged some losses but did not provide details. Last week, India's air force chief said India shot down five Pakistani fighter jets and one other military aircraft during clashes in the first such public claim by India. Pakistan rejected it, saying both sides should open their aircraft inventories to independent verification. During his speech yesterday, Modi also hinted India would continue its unilateral suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. The treaty, which India suspended after the April massacre, allows sharing of the Indus River that runs about 2,897km through South Asia and is a lifeline for both countries. 'Rivers from India were irrigating the lands of enemies while my country's farmers and land faced a deficiency of water,' Modi said. 'India has now decided that blood and water will not flow together.' Pakistan has said any effort by India to stop or divert the water from flowing into Pakistan would be considered an 'act of war.' — AP

Malaysia condemns Israel's 'Greater Israel' agenda, settlement expansion

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia unequivocally condemns, in the strongest terms, the latest statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, propagating the unlawful and illegal expansionist vision of a "Greater Israel". In statement on Friday, the Foreign Minister said these planned actions constitute a blatant violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention and are to entrench the illegal occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). The E1 project which covers area between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim, contravenes international law and relevant United Nations (UN) resolutions. "Its main purpose is to fracture the West Bank, erase Palestinian sovereignty and destroy the two State solution," the statement read. The ministry said Malaysia is equally outraged by the deliberate killings of journalists and media personnel in the Gaza Strip which constitute an egregious violation of international law and a flagrant breach of UN Security Council Resolution 2222 on the protection of journalists in conflict zones. "These targeted attacks form part of Israeli Zionist regime's systematic campaign to silence independent reporting, including to obstruct the flow of information such as settler violence, and conceal its ongoing genocide and war crimes committed in the OPT," it said. It reiterated Malaysia steadfast commitment to the Palestinian cause and will continue our efforts towards the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. "The United Nations and the international community must act now to immediately halt these illegal attempts by the Israeli Zionist regime and to safeguard the inalienable rights, security, and freedom of the Palestinian people," it said. According to media reports, Netanyahu is propagating the unlawful and illegal expansionist vision of a "Greater Israel", along with the approval for building thousands of settlement units in the E1 area between Jerusalem and Ma'ale Adumim in the OPT. – Bernama
