Assam: Communal tensions erupt in Dhubri after suspected cow head discovered near temple
Communal tensions and protests broke out in Assam's Dhubri town on Sunday after the remains of an animal, suspected to be the head of a cow, were discovered near the premises of a Hindu temple, India Today NE reported.
The animal remains were found by a person visiting the Hanuman temple in ward number 3, around 7.30 am. The discovery led to widespread protests in the area by 9 am.
According to the Assam Tribune, this was the third such incident at the same temple.
A large number of residents blocked a road adjacent to the temple. They shouted slogans and burned tyres as part of their demonstration, Assam Tribune reported.
They also prevented the police from removing the remains of the animal, insisting that it must remain untouched until 'those responsible are identified and arrested'.
Tensions escalated in the area despite a large number of police personnel being deployed, India Today NE reported. By 11 am, Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Dibakar Nath and Superintendent of Police Nabin Singh arrived at the location, addressed the crowd and promised a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.
On Monday, the deputy commissioner issued orders prohibiting five or more persons from gathering in the Dhubri town under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The administration has also banned rallies, processions, meetings or demonstrations.

ASP Giripunje lost his life in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast triggered by Naxalites in Konta, Sukma district, earlier today. The mortal remains of the officer were brought to his residence in Raipur, where CM Sai expressed his condolences. Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said, 'ASP Akash Rao Giripunje made the supreme sacrifice in an IED blast in Sukma's Konta. We salute his bravery and are here to honour him. The state government stands firmly with his family.' Condemning the attack, CM Sai added, 'Naxalism is on its last legs, and in their desperation, Naxalites are resorting to such cowardly acts.' IG Sundarraj, in his statement, said that some other officers and jawans were injured due to the IED blast. 'A pressure IED blast near Dondra on Konta-Errabora road; ASP Konta Division, District Sukma, Akash Rao Giripunje sustains serious injuries. Some other officers and jawans have also been injured in this pressure IED blast', IG Sundarraj said in his statement. According to IG, ASP Giripunje was on foot patrol duty to prevent any Naxalite incident, given the call by CPI (M) for Bharat Bandh on June Sundarraj also mentioned that all the injured are being treated at the Konta Hospital. Meanwhile, ASP Giripunje's condition is critical. Efforts are being made to shift him to a higher medical centre soon for better treatment. 'ASP Akash Rao Giripunje was on foot patrol duty in the area to prevent any kind of Naxalite incident in view of the call for Bharat Bandh on 10 June by CPI(M). All the injured are being treated at Konta Hospital. Among the injured, the condition of ASP Akash Rao is very serious and critical. The other injured are currently out of danger. Absconding Wazahat Khan held in Kolkata in hate speech case
The Kolkata Police on Monday evening arrested Wazahat Khan, who had lodged a complaint against social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli for allegedly uploading a video with communal comments , in the city, a senior officer said. Khan was hiding in a flat in the Amherst Street area from where he was picked up, the officer said. Khan, who was absconding, has been booked under various sections of the BNS, including those dealing with promoting enmity between different groups based on religion, race, and insults or attempts to insult religion. An FIR was registered against him at the Golf Green Police Station in south Kolkata for allegedly promoting hate speech and hurting religious sentiments through his social media posts. The other charges slapped against him included sections on provoking breach of peace and statements conducing to public mischief. Live Events The personnel from the Kolkata Police Anti-Rowdy Section of the Detective Department earlier conducted raids at Digha and Howrah in search of the absconding accused, an officer said. Khan ignored three consecutive summonses for questioning and remained on the run till he was arrested, police said. The arrest followed a joint raid of the Kolkata Police and officials of the city police's Detective Department. Earlier, on May 30, Sharmistha Panoli was arrested by Kolkata Police from Gurugram in Haryana after a video she uploaded on social media drew widespread outrage. Khan, the prime complainant against Panoli, had lodged his complaint against the influencer under several sections, including those pertaining to malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings leading the police to lodge a case against her on May 15. In the video, Panoli allegedly used abusive language and made communal remarks criticising a section of Bollywood celebrities for their silence on Operation Sindoor. The video in question was later deleted, and Panoli had tendered an unconditional apology on social media. The 22-year law student was subsequently presented before a magistrate here and sent to 14-day judicial custody. Panoli was granted conditional interim bail by the Calcutta High Court on June 5 on grounds that the complaint against her did not disclose any cognisable offence. She was set free a day later. The court, while refusing to grant her interim bail earlier, had said that freedom of speech is not absolute and does not allow anyone to hurt religious sentiments. Meanwhile, multiple complaints had also been lodged against Wazahat Khan with Kolkata Police, including one by the Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad. The Parishad's complaint, dated June 2 and addressed to the Officer-in-Charge of the Garden Reach Police Station, accused Khan of using derogatory, inflammatory, and sexually explicit language targeting Hindu deities, religious traditions, and the community at large. After Panoli's arrest, Khan went missing with his father Saadat Khan telling the media that the family had been receiving threatening calls accusing them of "ruining Panoli's life".

Bengaluru stampede: ‘Action against police looks like scapegoating,' Indian Police Foundation tells Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah
The Indian Police Foundation (IPF) – a group representing retired police personnel – has asked the Karnataka government to reinstate the police officers who have been suspended in the wake of the Bengaluru stampede. Eleven people died after a stampede occurred outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the Karnataka capital during the victory celebrations of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL). In a letter addressed to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday, the IPF stated, 'The suspension of five police officers, including the Commissioner of Police, prior to the completion of a detailed investigation, has raised serious concerns within the professional policing community across the country. Actions taken without establishing individual responsibility would be seen as scapegoating rather than principled accountability and may have a demoralising effect on the entire police force, while undermining institutional integrity.' 'In the spirit of constructive engagement, the Indian Police Foundation offers to support the Government by conducting a Post-Incident Review and Analysis. This would be a non-adversarial, independent exercise, not intended for fault-finding, but focused on identifying systemic gaps, good practices, and actionable lessons to guide police operations and training. The IPF has in its membership a distinguished team of former DGPs, former civil servants, senior police leaders, forensic scientists, public safety experts, and academics who can undertake this exercise with neutrality, sensitivity, and professionalism,' the letter added. A day after the Bengaluru stampede, the state government had suspended Bengaluru Commissioner of Police B Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekhar H Tekkannavar, ACP (Cubbon Park sub-division) C Balakrishna, and police inspector Girish A K on Thursday. Besides the Opposition, social media users have also flooded the government with requests to reinstate Dayananda.
