U.S. women's gymnastics program begins new Olympic cycle, possible new era

Simone Biles was recently in an uncharacteristic place at a gymnastics event: the spectator seats. At a July tune-up meet, Biles watched the gymnasts who this week will compete for the title she won a record nine times: U.S. all-around champion. We don't know yet whether any of Biles and two-time Olympians Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles will return to elite competition in the run-up to Los Angeles 2028. The headliners at this week's Xfinity U.S. Championships include a mix: veterans like two-time Olympic alternate Leanne Wong, first-year seniors like 16-year-old Claire Pease (who won that July event in front of Biles) and those somewhere in between, like Hezly Rivera, a 17-year-old who was on the 2024 Olympic champion team. Nick Zaccardi, After nationals and an early fall selection camp, four women will be named to compete at October's World Championships, where there are only individual events. It is guaranteed that a new all-around champion will be crowned after two days of competition Friday and Sunday in New Orleans. Not only is Biles absent, but so is the only other woman to claim the title in the last six editions (Konnor McClain, 2022). Others are now stepping into the spotlight. Joscelyn Roberson, a 2024 Olympic alternate who trained with Biles in Texas leading up to Paris, said she received such adulation from young fans at a recent meet that, 'I feel like they're acting like I'm Simone.' It's a new feeling. 'If I ever got super, super nervous (in the past), I could be like, 'Oh, no one's watching me. They're watching Simone. They're watching Jordan. They're watching Suni and Jade. They're not watching me,'' Roberson, a rising University of Arkansas sophomore, said in a press conference Wednesday. 'But now it's kind of hard because you are older and you're one of the oldest, even though we are still so young. It's like, OK, maybe they are kind of watching me. It adds a different level of nerves, but I love it. I love a big crowd.' Wong, who graduated magna cum laude from the University of Florida with a degree in health education and behavior, is the veteran of the group at 21. She decided to continue in elite gymnastics after finishing her NCAA career in the spring. 'I just took the summer to do some other life things,' she said, including a mission trip to Costa Rica, moving into a new house and having her wisdom teeth removed. 'It was like, all right, let's just go back to gymnastics because I'm not ready to put it away yet.' Pease can become the first woman to win U.S. junior and senior all-around titles in back-to-back years since Shawn Johnson in 2006 and 2007. Pease was inspired last year by watching Rivera, one of her training partners outside Dallas, make it all the way to Paris. Taylor Hancock, Rivera, the youngest U.S. Olympian across all sports in Paris, has gazed at her gold medal about once a month over the last year to wow herself all over again. She also put Olympic rings above her bed. 'My mindset is kind of like, I achieved my dreams, I achieved my goals, but I still have more (goals), so I kind of like to put that (the Olympics) in the back of my head for now,' Rivera said last month. 'Every time in the gym, I don't think that I went to the Olympics. I'm just kind of training like I've almost never been, in a way.' Training partners Jayla Hang, who has the highest all-around score of any American in 2025, and Simone Rose, who was second to Pease at a July tune-up meet, are motivated by 2024. For Hang, it's from not making the Olympic Trials after placing 16th at last year's U.S. Championships. For Rose, it's from making it to the Olympic Trials, where she placed 10th in the all-around as the second-youngest gymnast in the field. 'It really helped me see I truly belong here,' she said. The last three Olympic teams included returning gymnasts from the previous Games, including a record-tying four in 2024. But before that, the teams in 2004, 2008 and 2012 included zero returning Olympians. Skye Blakely, the 2024 U.S. Championships runner-up to Biles, is among those pushing for 2028. She made it to each of the last two Olympic Trials, but didn't compete either time due to injuries sustained preparing for the meet, including an Achilles tear last year. Blakely plans to perform on two events this week — uneven bars and balance beam — in her first elite meet in 14 months. 'Knowing that trials didn't go the way I thought it was going to at all, and having this big injury, I was truly blessed at one moment to know that I still had on my heart the goal to want to go to the Olympics,' she said.

How Liverpool could line up with Bradley Barcola in four-way attacking dream

If Liverpool is unable to sign Newcastle forward Alexander Isak — though all signs point to the Swedish international ending up at Anfield — the club may pivot to PSG winger Bradley Barcola. The shifty 22-year-old French winger from PSG produced his most productive season in club football a season ago and helped the Parisian capture a European treble. Barcola, weighed alongside Real Madrid forward Rodrygo as a potential attacking option should the Isak move fall through, would not be cheap. PSG paid Olympique Lyon €45 million ($52.4M) for the winger in 2023 and would likely seek a fee in the vicinity of €100 ($116.4M) million to sell him this summer. READ MORE: Liverpool handed double boost before Community Shield as Virgil van Dijk spotted READ MORE: Darwin Nunez showed his true colors with trophy remark as Liverpool transfer exit looms Barcola's arrival makes a little more intuitive sense for Liverpool coach Arne Slot's current squad construction than Isak's. He's a right-footer who primarily lines up on the left but has experience playing on both flanks. Let's explore some potential XI. Playing Barcola would not impact the back five, slated to be Alisson in goal behind a back four of Jeremie Frimpong (or Conor Bradley), Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Milos Kerkez. Assuming Slot plays a combination of Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, and Dominik Szoboszlai (as he's lined up in preseason) deep, we're left with four slots. How does Barcola profile? He produced a massive 0.97 expected non-penalty goals+assists per 90 minutes in the league last year, one of the best marks in Europe. He's a strong ball carrier (5.45 per 90, 91st percentile in Europe's top five leagues) but a poor progressive passer (3.33, 40th). He's better as the recipient of someone else's run (think Florian Writz): his 15.17 progressive passes received rank in the 99th percentile (per Fbref). It makes sense to play Barcola on the left while Wirtz plays the No. 10 role. New signings Hugo Ekitike and Mohamed Salah complete the forward line. The latter two are elite in transition. READ MORE: Liverpool told it could upgrade on Ibrahima Konate for free amid contract wait READ MORE: Florian Wirtz justifies $156M price tag as he receives huge honor just weeks after Liverpool move Barcola's arrival would complicate a path to the first team for 2025 preseason standout Rio Ngumoha, who is much more of a pure ball-progressor. He is much more of a direct mirror to Cody Gakpo than a replacement for the outgoing Luis Diaz. This makes Barcola a better understudy for Salah on the right when the 33-year-old inevitably rests throughout the season to preserve his body (and while he's gone during AFCON). SAYS: It speaks volumes that Slot was willing to jettison Diaz once the signing of Wirtz (a similar profile) was secured. Liverpool is looking for a final-third receiver, not an initiator. Barcola is a good fit, a good age, and makes more sense than Isak (who would leave Ekitike in a foreign position at left wing on occasion). He's a good fit, but both Gakpo and Ngumoha would rightfully be upset. His near-overlapping profile with Gakpo should lead Liverpool to pass in favor of a pure goal-poacher like Isak. However, it's smart Slot is thinking about versatile players (Gakpo only lines up on the left at this point).

Ballon d'Or Nominees: Ousmane Dembélé, Chloe Kelly Among Top Players

UEFA Champions League Ballon d'Or Nominees: Ousmane Dembélé, Chloe Kelly Among Top Players Updated Aug. 7, 2025 1:20 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé and England forward Chloe Kelly are among the contenders to win the men's and women's Ballon d'Or award. The 30 men's and 30 women's nominees were revealed Thursday by France Football magazine, with the winners to be announced at a ceremony in Paris on Sept. 22. The 28-year-old Dembélé was inspirational in leading PSG to its first Champions League title after years of falling short and helped the French club complete a treble. He scored a career-high 35 goals overall for PSG last season. Teenage star Lamine Yamal, whose mesmerizing performances lit up the Champions League and helped Barcelona win the Spanish league title, is among the other men's nominees. Kelly starred for England at Euros When England won the women's European Championship last month, the 27-year-old Kelly blasted home the decisive penalty in the final against World Cup winner Spain. She also played a key role earlier in the tense knockout stages. Last season, Kelly played on the right flank as Arsenal won the women's Champions League with another against-the-odds win over powerhouse Barcelona. She faces competition from defender Lucy Bronze and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton — her England teammates who both play for Chelsea — and from Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, the winner of the past two awards. (Photo by Joan Cros - Corbis/Getty Images) PSG players in the spotlight Dembélé was one of nine PSG players nominated for the men's award, including goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, forward Désiré Doué, who scored twice in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the Champions League final, and inspirational winger Khvitcha Kvaratskhelia, who joined from Napoli in the January transfer window. The other men's nominees include Egypt striker Mo Salah, whose 29 league goals helped Liverpool win the Premier League, and prolific Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé, who netted 44 times for Madrid last season. Midfielder Rodri won the Ballon d'Or last year after impressing with Manchester City and Spain but missed most of last season with a knee injury. Real Madrid snubbed the star-studded ceremony last year in apparent protest because its forward Vinícius Júnior finished in second place. After staying away, Madrid and its players then vented their feelings on social media. The voting system The Ballon d'Or was created by France Football magazine and has been awarded since 1956 for men, and since 2018 for women. It is voted for by journalists from the top 100 countries in the FIFA rankings for the men's award and the top 50 FIFA-ranked countries for the women's award. Each journalist, one per country, selects players in ranked order with points attributed to each position. The winner is the player who receives the most points. Other nominations PSG coach Luis Enrique was among the nominees for best men's coach and England's Sarina Wiegman best women's coach. Donnarumma, whose shot-stopping in the knockout stages proved crucial to PSG's success, is favored to win the Lev Yashin award for best men's goalkeeper, while Hampton is among the five women's candidates for that award.
