Peter Krykant remembered as a 'lifesaver' at funeral

Glasgow Times3 days ago
Peter, who became a public figure after he set up an unofficial drugs consumption room in Glasgow in 2020, died suddenly last month at the age of 48.
At his funeral at Falkirk Crematorium yesterday (July 21) the Daily Record reports celebrant John Fox said: "The tragedy is that Peter cared so much about the cause of safe consumption and harm reduction to improve the lives and experiences of people who use drugs.
"Yet he was not able to address his own mental and physical health and to find his way out of addiction and back to the safe stability of his loving family and friends.'

(Image: Mark F Gibson) He was also praised by MSP Paul Sweeney who said: "Peter's death is a great tragedy to all those who knew and loved him. He undoubtedly saved lives and his legacy is evident."
Peter set up the consumption room, which operated in 2020 and 2021, in a converted van in Glasgow city centre.
He used crowdfunding and his own money in an effort to highlight the need for a safe space for drug users to inject.
The van was modelled on a similar operation Peter, who also battled addiction, visited in Copenhagen and had sterile injecting kits, swabs and Naloxone, as well as a defibrillator.
The Glasgow Times previously reported Peter was found dead after police were called to Graham Avenue in Larbert on Monday, June 9 following a report of concern for a person.

Dear Coleen: I'm struggling with my boyfriend's rude ex... I don't trust her

"My boyfriend said they were just friends now and their relationship had only ever been about sex, never romantic or serious." I've been with my boyfriend for about four months and we've both just finished our second year at the same university. ‌ Everything was going really well until I spent a week with him at his parents' house, where he grew up, and we hung out with his old schoolfriends, who were also home for the holidays. ‌ I got on well with all of them apart from one girl, who was rude. She was cold and standoffish and made a few snide remarks in response to things I said in conversation. ‌ I felt embarrassed and also quite shocked that she'd taken such a dislike to me, as I've never had that reaction from anyone before. It turned out that she'd been sleeping with my boyfriend right up until he started going out with me. They've had a kind of friends-with-benefits relationship over the past couple of years, hooking up during the holidays. ‌ My boyfriend said they were just friends now and their relationship had only ever been about sex, never romantic or serious. He said he was amazed she even wanted to sleep with him, as she's never been short of guys desperate to date her. She is undeniably pretty. I don't trust her, though, and think my boyfriend is naive. I know she contacts him a lot and I'm sure she wants a proper relationship with him, but he can't see it. Any tips? Coleen says You're finding your feet in this new relationship and getting to know each other better, so I get why this has thrown you off kilter. You probably have a few questions about how much of a threat this girl is and if their relationship was as trivial as your boyfriend is making out. ‌ However, I think you should have more confidence. He's dating you and he's introduced you to his parents and his friends, which shows how important you are. People don't do that if they're not invested. He's obviously excited to show you off and wants you to get to know other important people in his life. Maybe she is a bit jealous or has deeper feelings for him but those are her issues – don't let her behaviour derail you. If you see her again and she's rude to you, then be assertive and call her out on it. My guess is that she'll think twice about how she speaks to you in future.

Race hate has no place in Scotland and should not be tolerated

Blaming people who look or sound different to us is not the answer and can never be condoned. Hate has no place in Scotland and should not be tolerated. It's a depressing reality that record numbers of people across Scotland are falling victim to hate crimes. ‌ Cases of racial and religious abuse have risen sharply in the past three years. But the vast majority of reported crimes now involve what police term a 'racial aggravator'. ‌ It's little surprise given the hatred that is now routinely spouted on social media by cretins desperate for attention. But the real villains are the likes of Donald Trump and Nigel Farage who have forged political careers by stirring up anti-immigration rhetoric. ‌ Right-wing populists find huge audiences online where they can easily point the finger at refugees and Muslims and blame them for all the UK's ills. Let's not forget it was the Conservatives, the party which Reform owes its very existence, who were in power throughout the 2010s. It was Tory economics that shuttered industries in the 1980s and 1990s and condemned too many towns and villages to economic depressions they have struggled against ever since. It was Margaret Thatcher and her cheerleaders who sold off our public utilities on the cheap, condemning consumers to line the pockets of fat cats for simply switching on the kettle or running their tap. ‌ The UK faces difficult economic choices, like most major Western nations, and has struggled with inflation. It's no wonder some people are left angry as a result. But blaming people who look or sound different to us is not the answer and can never be condoned. Hate has no place in Scotland and should not be tolerated. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. Social media giants have not done enough to stop their platforms from becoming a tool for abuse and bullying. The Record has highlighted the concerns of parents who have seen what the torment can do to their children. Ruth Moss experienced every parent's worst nightmare - the loss of a child. Her daughter Sophie took her own life in 2014 after being exposed to harmful material including the glorification of suicide. The Online Safety Act will not clean up social media entirely but as Ruth says, it is a step in the right direction. Time and again through the Record's Our Future campaign we have seen the damage caused by the unchecked use of social media to bully and intimidate young people. Hopefully these welcome measures will make a positive difference.

Torched car found on Edinburgh housing estate near where 'firearm discharged'

Footage from Hailesland Grove shows what little remains of the vehicle which suffered significant damage while parked outside dozens of homes in the residential area. A vehicle has been left burnt out on an Edinburgh housing estate where a gun was reportedly shot. Armed cops swarmed Hailesland Gardens when a bullet was reportedly blasted at around 3.40pm, prompting police to lock down the residential street. Footage from neighbouring, Hailesland Grove shows what little remains of the vehicle which suffered significant damage from being torched while parked outside dozens of homes. A 23-year-old was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries following the incident. Images from the scene shows a police car behind the shell of the burnt out vehicle, although it has yet to be confirmed if the incidents are linked. One resident on the street, speaking anonymously, told Edinburgh Live: "It's absolutely terrifying to live here... we don't know if the car fire is related to the shooting but hopefully they find this person. "There are lots of children in the area and they need to be protected." Firearms officers were also pictured patrolling a footpath near Hailesland Grove with the area taped off.
