Walmart ramps up e-commerce to rival Amazon's Prime Day event
Yahoo Finance Senior Reporter Brooke DiPalma breaks down Walmart's latest push to grow its e-commerce and grocery businesses.

Amazon's Prime Day deals will take front and center stage for most shoppers this week, as it extends its signature shopping period to four days for the first time. But this year, as in recent years, it is not alone. Yahoo Finance's Brooke DiPalma joins us now with more, Brooke.
Good afternoon to you both. Certainly what we've seen in recent years is really Amazon get taken on by their retail rivals. Think Target, think Walmart specifically, but so many others are looking to get in on this big splash of savings like Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, even Tractor Supply and Ulta Beauty. Well, they're looking to get in on the action, too. But let's take a closer look at one of their biggest competitors, Walmart. Well, Walmart, they're really upping their ante when it comes to their e-commerce business. In the last quarter, that e-commerce business here in the U.S. just turned profitable, and now they're really doubling down on their offering this week. They're instead of just having a four-day event like Amazon Prime, they're looking to do it bigger. And so Walmart's having a six-day event from July 8th to July 13th. That's trumping Amazon Prime's Day event from July 11th, or July 8th rather, to July 11th. Now, some sources tell me that Amazon is clearly the big winner this week. And sure, customers, just top of mind, they'll go to Amazon first, they'll look at the prices. But then ultimately, what they might be doing is going elsewhere in this environment where consumers are so conscientious about how much things cost. They really are conscientious about where exactly they want to spend here. And so they'll go elsewhere. They'll go to that Walmart, they'll go to these other retailers. But this could be a prime opportunity for Walmart. That's what some analysts tell me. Specifically, what they really want to gain here is memberships. The Walmart Deals Week, they're ultimately enticing those Walmart Plus customers, something that launched back in 2020, to sign up. They're saying, hey, through mid-July, we're going to offer 50% off, and that could be a big opportunity for Walmart. But when you really look at another business that Walmart's winning on, that's Walmart Grocery business here. Of course, they've been touting that on recent earnings calls that they're gaining more high-income shoppers, and that Walmart Plus membership also tends to be higher income as well. But when you take a look at the numbers, guys, Walmart's e-commerce business is far, far lower than Amazon's business here when it comes to just how much money they're bringing in. If you take a look at last year right here, you could see that Walmart brought in around $121 billion when it comes to their e-commerce business. That's of course, far lower than Amazon's e-commerce business online stores. And also, when you think about just how much membership fees they bring in, Amazon also surpasses by a landslide how much Walmart Plus brings in when it comes to membership fees. And also, the top side here is that Walmart Plus subscription is far lower than Amazon Prime. Also, they're offering that half off right now. And so it could entice customers. That's ultimately what Walmart wants here. They want to take the eyes away from Amazon.
Will there be certain categories, Brooke, where Walmart would think, okay, we have maybe some type of competitive advantage here? Would it be, you know, for example, would it be food sales?
Yeah, certainly. So 60% of Walmart's U.S. sales is grocery. And that's what ultimately Amazon has to worry about here. One analyst telling me that one of the biggest things that Amazon, or rather Walmart has to look out for, is if Amazon gets competitive on their grocery business. And what we've seen in recent months is really Amazon invest, look around, see exactly how they could really integrate and grow that Whole Foods acquisition that happened back in 2017, just a few years ago now, it seems like with the pandemic. But really, they're trying to entice consumers here with that.

Markets still expect Sept. Fed rate cut, despite hot PPI data
Even hotter-than-expected inflation data isn't rattling the market's expectation of an interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve in September. Yahoo Finance Senior Reporters Jennifer Schonberger and Allie Canal outline the latest. To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Morning Brief. What's also interesting, Jen, is we're not seeing, uh, at least fed funds futures budge that much this morning. That is not the sum total of of inflation expect of, uh, interest rate expectations, but it is a snapshot. Yeah, it is interesting that we're holding at 90% plus and above. Um, but again, I think it's almost like the market's trying to force the Fed's hand, and we do know there's volatility in these reports. So we'll have to see. We're going to get another CPI. We're going to get another PPI before September. But I think also, I'm reading this morning that you didn't just see the good side of PPI pop up, you saw the services side as well. And, uh, we heard from Chicago Fed President Austin Goolsbee yesterday, and when he talked about the CPI number, he said what concerned him about that was that services increased. So if we are seeing inflation increase, not just on the goods side, but on the services side, that's going to be concerning for the Fed. They're going to need to see more reports, right, before they make any determination on that. But if it's clear that inflation is not staying in the goods lane, and it's spilling over to services, which is what the Fed was concerned about before, we saw inflation coming down before this recent rout popping back up, then that's something to look for. Um, and Ali, you know, of course, it's not just fed funds futures. We can look across the spectrum, and we definitely saw stocks react negatively to this. Yeah, stock futures falling across the board here. And it is interesting to see those fed fund futures, uh, still hovering around that 95% when it comes to expectations for rate cuts in September, cuz normally that's correlated to what we see in the stock market. I'm looking at bond yields right now, too. And the 10-year yield is still low, hovering around 4.2%. So we're not seeing this, uh, massive recalibration of rate cut expectations, but we do have a wide range of dispersion when it comes to what Wall Street thinks is going to happen, when it comes to what actual FOMC officials think could happen. And that's because, as Jed was Jen was alluding to, the Fed is really caught between its two dual mandates. And even though we did have a better than feared CPI print, let's not forget that core services did firm up. And that's what I've been hearing from my sources is the fact that we have services inflation that's now firmer. That can offset any increases we see on the good side due to tariffs. And like you were saying, Julie, we have heard from businesses throughout this earning season that they're absorbing a lot of these costs. But from the early commentary on Wall Street, that's only going to last so long, and eventually that has to get passed on to the consumer price index and to, uh, our actual wallets. So that's something to look out for in the fall, and even into 2026, because that's what economists have been telling us. We're not going to see this tariff pass through right away. It's going to take a longer time. And I think markets got a little too excited after that CPI report the other day that maybe we won't see that impact fully materialize. I just, I just think from this hotter PPI print that might not be a reality.

Bitcoin's fresh record high, Bullish's trading debut
Bitcoin (BTC-USD) has pulled back from its climb to a fresh record high. The recent rally was fueled by Wall Street's expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts and institutional adoption of crypto. Yahoo Finance Senior Reporter Ines Ferré outlines the latest in the crypto space, including the recent bitcoin moves and crypto exchange Bullish's (BLSH) initial public offering (IPO). Bitcoin is coming off record highs after that hotter than expected July PPI print, but the token is up roughly 30% year to date. Yahoo Finance Senior Reporter, Ines Ferre here with more on Bitcoin and the crypto rally more broadly. Hi, Ines. Hi, Julia. Uh the crypto rally, fueled by also expectations of looser monetary policy coming. But nevertheless, look, this has been a massive rally this year because of institutional adoption. I mean, we we used to talk about crypto when it came to the retail investor, but now we are talking more and more about institutions. You have corporations that have been following the strategy playbook of adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets. Uh I do want to point out Bullish, the company that just went public yesterday, the crypto exchange that is geared towards institutions, by the way. So bullish uh had closed at $70 per share. They priced their IPO at $37 per share. So you can just see the investor appetite for anything that has to do with crypto. Also want to mention Ether, the native coin of Ethereum, that has been near record highs as well. And Tom Lee of Fundstrat, basically pointing out that Wall Street is building its projects on Ethereum, that stable coins are on Ethereum as well. So you have a lot of interest for Ether as well, and also corporations which are as well adding uh Ether to their balance sheets. And the tailwinds that this industry has been having from the government are unprecedented. I mean, these are what Tom Lee earlier this week had noted to us fundamental changes. You have the government that is pushing for crypto. You have the initiative for 401Ks from President Trump. You also have the uh SEC announcing the crypto project as well. Uh so you have all these initiatives from the government. Even Scott Besson this morning was in on an interview with Fox Business saying that the US is going to stop selling its Bitcoin reserves, those Bitcoin that they have that are confiscated Bitcoin, that those are now worth about 10 billion or 15 billion dollars, Julie. Ines, in another sign of uh the crypto verse, so to speak, we saw a big IPO from a company called Bullish yesterday, which is the parent company of CoinDesk among other things, and I believe last I checked it still had some momentum this morning. Yeah, that's right. It is up about 5% in pre-market. It was about 12% higher in pre-market. Look, there's 7 and a half percent. So uh, again, this enthusiasm for anything that has to do with crypto, and also the IPOs that we have had this year, uh when you look at what Circle has done as well, uh it has been a blockbuster IPO. Bullish wants to also get into the US market because it's a crypto exchange for institutions in the abroad, but uh they have big backers, and there's just um a lot of enthusiasm for this company. So IPOs have done well, and these top tokens have also done well in this rally. Yes, I guess the rising tide, all boats, all of that. Ines, thank you very much. Appreciate it.
