‘Weapons' Director Details the ‘Turmoil' the Movie Faced Amid Pedro Pascal's Exit
Pedro Pascal has understandably earned the reputation of being the busiest man in Hollywood, and it's easy to see why. Pascal's name feels like it pops up in every significant movie or television show of late. However, the 50-year-old Fantastic Four: First Steps star's loaded schedule actually did cause an issue for one specific movie. As Weapons director Zach Cregger explained, following strike delays in Hollywood, Pascal had to drop out of the movie due to scheduling issues, as Entertainment Weekly revealed. Unfortunately for Cregger, Pascal's departure flipped much of what was initially planned for Weapons on its head, and he explained the "turmoil" it caused. 'Weapons' Director Had to Recast 'Entire Movie' After Pedro Pascal Dropped Out Pascal was initially slated to play the role of Archer in Weapons, the father of one missing child, a part that's now played by Josh Brolin. As Cregger explained to Entertainment Weekly, that was just the start, revealing that he had to recast almost the entire movie. "I had a whole different cast for this movie," Cregger explained. "And then we had the strike, and then Pedro Pascal's schedule threw us into turmoil. I had to recast the entire movie." "This is what happens, right?" Cregger continues. "The strikes delayed us, and then when you delay, people's schedules get conflicts, and then you're back at square one. I bear no ill will towards anybody. We just kept getting delayed and delayed. It's like a domino effect. So I had to start over again." Of the four initial cast members that were confirmed to be in the movie, a group that included Pascal, Brian Tyree Henry, Renate Reinsve and Austin Abrams, only Abrams made it to the final cast. Cregger praised Abrams, who plays James, a homeless man struggling with addiction in the movie. "He hung tough with me. That's my dude right there," Cregger comments. Even Without Pedro Pascal, 'Weapons' Is Earning Incredibly Strong Reviews Cregger and the rest of the crew deserve praise for the handling of the recasting, and it's even more noteworthy when considering just how strong the reviews of Weapons have been thus far. While the movie officially releases in theaters on August 8, early viewings and critics' reviews have been coming in for days. And to put it as bluntly as possible, many of them are almost as perfect as the 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score that Weapons currently boasts. Cregger's film, which stars Julia Garner in the lead role of Justine Gandy, was turning heads when it was at 100 percent based on 10-15 critic reviews. Now, that number is up to 35 reviews, and it's yet to get a tally in the loss column. Next up for the horror/mystery movie is the fan feedback, which should begin pouring in over the weekend.'Weapons' Director Details the 'Turmoil' the Movie Faced Amid Pedro Pascal's Exit first appeared on Men's Journal on Aug 6, 2025 Solve the daily Crossword

Teens arrested for Brad Pitt burglary targeted other stars, say LA police
Four teenagers have been arrested over a burglary that left actor Brad Pitt's home ransacked, police said. The suspects are allegedly behind a number of "celebrity burglaries" that targeted the houses of actors and professional athletes, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said. He said the male suspects, two 18-year-olds, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, are street gang members, and property stolen in the burglaries was found when police searched their homes. Police did not name those whose properties were targeted, but celebrities including Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, LA Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto and ex-LA Football Club striker Olivier Giroud have reported break-ins this year. The investigation started in late June after Pitt's home was raided by a trio of masked thieves. McDonnell said the group hopped a perimeter fence surrounding the Los Feliz home and shattered a window, hopping inside and taking items before fleeing. Police did not confirm the home belonged to the Oscar-winning actor, but the address matched that of a property Pitt bought in 2023. The large three-bedroom house sits just outside Griffith Park, where the famous Hollywood Sign sits. It is surrounded by a fence and greenery that shields the property from public view. Pitt was not home at the time of the burglary and was promoting his new film, F1. The BBC has contacted representatives for the actor. McDonnell said investigators found the suspects were part of a crew that "were burglarizing various high-profile residents throughout the city", which he said included homes of "actors and professional athletes". Last week, authorities followed the four suspects and were able to arrest them on burglary charges, he added. Police did not elaborate on what items were recovered after police searched their homes. McDonnell said burglars like this group had become increasingly smart in their crimes - planting surveillance cameras in nearby flowerbeds or across the street from homes they target to monitor a victim's routine. He said thieves had also been using wi-fi jammers to knock out home surveillance systems and cameras that could alert homeowners or police of a break-in. He noted that celebrities and athletes can be easier targets since their appearances and games are publicised online. He noted, though, that anyone posting on social media about their travels can unknowingly be alerting a potential thief to their location. "We don't really give enough thought to... [while] we want our friends to know where we are and what we're doing, you're telling everybody else then who may be looking to exploit your situation," McDonnell said. Cityview's CEO on how new legislation could lead to more housing in California
This story was originally published on Multifamily Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Multifamily Dive newsletter. In late June, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation as part of the 2025-2026 state budget that reformed the California Environmental Quality Act. CEQA is intended to inform the government and the public about the potential environmental effects of proposed developments. Yet, many developers argue that it has become a tool for neighborhood groups to block housing. 'There are a lot of deals that didn't happen or got scrapped because of the threat of litigation or the threat of delay,' Sean Burton, CEO of Los Angeles-based apartment owner and developer Cityview, told Multifamily Dive. 'It was just too much risk, and so people passed on projects.' However, the budget, part of what Newsom called California's Abundance Agenda, promises to streamline CEQA review to expedite the delivery of housing and infrastructure projects, including infill housing, high-speed rail facilities, utilities, broadband, community-serving facilities, wildfire prevention and farmworker housing. 'It's the most significant land use legislation in California that I've seen in my career,' Burton said. 'CEQA has been around since 1971. It was probably the major impediment to getting new housing built in the state.' However, Burton now believes that more apartment developers will start exploring opportunities and taking action in California. Previously, some high-profile firms, such as Atlanta-based Wood Partners, had left the state. 'I think development deals are going to be more financeable in California because there is more certainty for investors and for lenders,' Burton said. Here, Burton talks with Multifamily Dive about the opportunity for development, the labor market and Cityview's decision to expand. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. SEAN BURTON: For the last couple of years, we focused on acquisitions because we could buy at a deep discount to replacement costs. When you have a significant delta between the existing replacement cost and the new cost, it makes sense to buy rather than build. But what we've seen over the last six months is that so many people are chasing acquisitions, that it's really driving cap rates down again to the point where the discount isn't that significant anymore to replacement cost. We believe we can build for a yield of 6.5% to 7% on cost, whereas it would likely sell at a cap rate of 4.5% to 5% today. That premium of 200 to 250 basis points makes development attractive. You're seeing cap rates start to go down, and frankly, there are just a lot more firms competing for acquisitions. For every acquisition deal, we have 20 competitors versus two or three for every development deal. So, there are fewer people doing development. It's a less-efficient market. It's more complicated. We're completing a 266-unit project located across from SpaceX's headquarters in the Los Angeles area. In LA County, we have 2,500 units under entitlement. We have the land, either we own it or we've optioned it. We're preparing to develop, so we haven't put sticks in the air in a couple of years because it's been really challenging due to high interest rates. Then, also here in LA, we passed a mansion tax, which has made it almost impossible to build new market-rate housing in the city. It will definitely affect construction labor, especially for smaller homebuilders. At Cityview, we're a fairly large developer. We work with big general contractors. We're not seeing it in our projects, but we're certainly hearing about smaller developers experiencing it. We're hearing a lot of concern from single-family homebuilders because of the need to rebuild from the fires here in LA. We just made the decision that it's a big country, and it was getting more and more challenging, frankly, to do things here in California. We are the fourth or fifth largest economy in the world on any given day, which means there's opportunity. But I don't want to put the fate of the whole firm and our future growth and scaling and development in California's hands. We've seen really good opportunities in places like Boston and Atlanta and Orlando, Florida, and obviously Dallas — markets that have a lot of demand and really strong growth. And, it's been our desire for a while to expand into those markets. Starting last summer, we worked with a third-party market study company, and we looked at the 40 biggest markets in the country across 55 different variables, including supply, demand, quality of life, education, economic factors and finance factors. We really whittled down to the top 10 markets that we wanted to focus on. And three were in the East — Boston, Atlanta and Orlando. Texas was already a priority market for us. So we decided to shift some of our focus and effort to investing in those states and cities.
