Sam Cook selected for England Test squad as injured Chris Woakes misses out
Aged 27 and having finessed a truckload of wickets for Essex at just 18 runs apiece, Cook could have been forgiven for wondering if the call would ever come. During the most recent winter, with six-figure offers from three different franchise tournaments, he could also have been forgiven for putting his bank balance first.

Instead, Cook committed to playing for Andrew Flintoff's Lions team in Australia and now a maiden Test call-up is the upshot. Chris Woakes misses out, his season yet to begin due to an ankle niggle, and so Cook is poised to take the new ball when England's summer gets under way on 22 May with a four-day Test at Trent Bridge.

No Woakes means Gus Atkinson is the senior bowler, only a year on from his breakout summer and with 11 caps to his name. Matt Potts (10 caps) is next. Extra pace comes from Josh Tongue, whose heartening return for Nottinghamshire after a 17-month fitness battle has coincided with injuries to Mark Wood, Brydon Carse and Olly Stone.
Another on the comeback trail is captain Ben Stokes, whose ability to operate as the fourth seamer is the chief unknown. The all-rounder, 33, has not played since hamstring surgery at the start of the year and, as well as Zimbabwe, he may also turn out for the Lions in one of their two four-day matches against India A in early June.

Seamers aside, England's squad is largely a case of keeping faith with incumbents. Zak Crawley holds his spot despite a personal horror show in New Zealand last December, while Ollie Pope has the chance to reassert himself at No 3 after keeping wicket during that 2-1 series win and watching Jacob Bethell sparkle at first drop.
Bethell is at the Indian Premier League – his Royal Challengers Bangalore side are likely to make the playoffs that overlap with the Zimbabwe Test – and so the spare batter is Jordan Cox, whose broken thumb before the first Test in New Zealand presented that chance. Shoaib Bashir, the stripling off-spinner whose returns lurch wildly, is another to get the backing of the panel.
England squad v Zimbabwe, 22-25 May (four-day), Trent Bridge: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Gus Atkinson, Sam Cook*, Josh Tongue, Matthew Potts, Shoaib Bashir, Jordan Cox*

Cook's selection says a couple of things. Firstly, domestic returns are still a consideration despite the likes of Bashir and Josh Hull jumping the queue last year based on raw attributes. Second is that pace, while desirable at international level, is not a total non-negotiable given Cook operates in the low 80s mph on the speed gun.

The right-armer is rather a medium-fast 'nipper' in the mould of South Africa's Vernon Philander or Mohammad Abbas of Pakistan, presenting an upright seam with relentless accuracy. The laws of physics mean a cricket ball cannot actually gather pace off a pitch but Cook, like those two magicians, hurries opponents by getting it to kiss the surface.
These skills could easily have seen Cook pigeon-holed as a Dukes ball specialist in England but during the Kookaburra rounds last summer he claimed a 10-wicket haul against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. For Rob Key, who still presides over selection, it was the final tick in the box. The phrase 'proper bowler' gets used here.
Zimbabwe at home is one thing but the question is whether these skills translate to the visit of India later this summer, or the Ashes tour that follows. As regards the latter, a Kookaburra with a seam that has stayed prominent for longer in recent seasons, and seen batting averages in Australia come down, is cause for optimism.

Rookie Isaac TeSlaa Stands Out in Lions Camp
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes had high praise for rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa, who was an underrated prospect coming out of college; the Lions drafted him in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. But TeSlaa has made his presence known throughout the Lions' offseason program and into the preseason. Appearing on the Up and Adams Show with Kay Adams, Holmes said TeSlaa's grittiness and love for the team make him a perfect fit for the Lions' culture.

Lions predicted to move on from former third-round pick in favor of 19-game starter
Lions predicted to move on from former third-round pick in favor of 19-game starter originally appeared on The Sporting News The Lions have already played three preseason games and have one more remaining before kicking off the regular season. Of course, the Lions played in the Hall of Fame Game against the Chargers last month, so those two teams will have one more preseason game than everybody else. This also means the Lions have more chances to evaluate their roster than the other teams. One of the positions that has been exciting to watch is the backup quarterback spot. Entering the offseason, former third-rounder Hendon Hooker was seen as the favorite to land the job. Hooker had an extremely productive college career and was seen as an interesting NFL prospect. However, the Tennessee product suffered a torn ACL during his final collegiate season and didn't see any action in his rookie season as a result. Hooker has since been unable to gain any momentum in the NFL, and now he appears to have fallen behind veteran journeyman Kyle Allen for the QB2 role in 2025. In fact, Dan Campbell even recently confirmed that Allen is leading Hooker as of now. Erik Schlitt and Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit published an updated 53-man roster projection after the third preseason game, and Hooker didn't make the cut. Regarding the backup quarterback spot, Reisman offered the following: Dan Campbell ensured there was no question about who the current leader for the backup job is, but now the question is whether the Lions will keep Hooker around as a third. The best case I can make for it is that he's still on a cost-controlled rookie contract, and I'm not putting further development out of the question. However, this is a championship-level ballclub right now, and roster spots are too valuable. Keeping only two quarterbacks likely means adding one after cutdowns, because Hooker is unlikely to clear waivers. A brand-new practice squad QB is far from ideal, but it's the hand Detroit has been given. As Reisman mentioned, Campbell has made it clear who the favorite to be the backup is, and there's no guarantee the team keeps three passers on the main roster. The Lions are ready to compete, and with one of the deepest rosters in the league, it may not be practical to keep three quarterbacks. However, due to Hooker's college production and relative youth, there is a high chance he would be claimed by another team. Having to find a third quarterback for the practice squad/emergencies wouldn't be ideal, but it may be the most likely scenario. In the Hall of Fame Game, Hooker completed just three of his six pass attempts for 18 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Hooker didn't have much more success in the second preseason game, finishing with just 38 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. Finally, against the Dolphins last weekend, Hooker had another bad performance. The quarterback completed six of his 13 passes for just 61 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. It's hard to argue that Hooker deserves the QB2 spot over Allen. Allen has been a journeyman in his career, but he has had good moments and definitely has looked better in recent times.

Isaac TeSlaa stuns D.J. Reed with highlight catch at Detroit Lions practice
Isaac TeSlaa stuns D.J. Reed with highlight catch at Detroit Lions practice originally appeared on The Sporting News Detroit Lions rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa continues to turn heads this offseason. TeSlaa has routinely been a standout during training camp, and that has not changed in the Lions' three preseason contests, each of which have seen the Arkansas product shine. The Michigan native continued his red-hot summer at practice on Tuesday, when he reeled-in the "catch of the day" with cornerback D.J. Reed in coverage, leaving the veteran stunned. "Catch of the day: Rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa had a one-on-one rep with veteran cornerback D.J. Reed early in practice and TeSlaa made a terrific over the shoulder catch right at the pylon of the end zone with Reed in pretty good coverage," Tim Twentyman of wrote. "Even Reed couldn't believe the catch as he looked over at TeSlaa and asked him if he really caught it." It would appear that this is the catch. TeSlaa was one of the most surprising selections in the 2025 NFL draft, as not only was he not on anyone's radar in the third round, the Lions traded up to get him. So far, it looks like general manager Brad Holmes knew exactly what he was doing. TeSlaa had two catches for 46 yards in the Hall of Fame Game and has scored touchdowns in each of the last two exhibition contests. "He's playing wide receiver like how we like our guys to play," Holmes said to Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show onMonday. "He's blocking, he's training in the run game. I know when you hear blocking in the run game from a wide receiver, it's like, 'Well, you've got to catch the football,' but that just shows a lot about the competitiveness and the desire of just a football player in general." "He started to catch up and he's started to understand the physicality it takes," Jared Goff said of TeSlaa. "He certainly has a chance to have a role in our offense and has done a great job getting better every day." With TeSlaa ascending and Tim Patrick having a quiet camp overall that has also seen him deal with injury, there is a thought that the rookie could steal some snaps away from the veteran sooner rather than later. At the very least, we should see TeSlaa getting some playing time early on in the season, and not just on special teams.
