Former student jailed for infanticide in George Town case
Judge Rofiah Mohamad ordered the 23-year-old woman to serve her sentence from the date of her arrest, accounting for previous detentions.
The judge noted the woman's remorse and suffering during her five years on bail, describing it as traumatic for her and her family.
A psychiatric report confirmed she suffered from severe depression and continues to require treatment.
The court opted for a restorative rather than punitive sentence, considering her mental state and intent to take her own life after childbirth.
The accused was initially charged with murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty.
She was later offered an alternative charge under Section 309A due to her mental condition and witness testimonies.
Infanticide under Section 309A carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and a fine.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Khairiah Dahalaan.
The accused was represented by lawyer RSN Rayer.

Property firm, directors charged with failure to pay service tax
SEREMBAN: A property management firm and its two board directors have claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to two counts of failing to pay service tax on Thursday (Aug 14). Mat Sham Ahmad, who also represented another director Md Samlan Ahmad and the company Tanjung Tuan Properties Sdn Bhd, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to them before judge Mohamad Kamil Nizam. For the first charge, the company and the duo were charged with failing to pay service tax for the taxable period from May 1 to June 30, 2024 as required under Section 26(4) of the Service Tax Act 2018. This was an offence under Section 26(8), read together with Section 78 (1) of the same legislation, which carries a penalty of up to RM50,000 fine or a jail term not exceeding three years or both upon conviction. For the second charge, they had allegedly failed to do the same for the taxable period from July 1 till Aug 31, 2024. Both offences were allegedly committed on July 31, 2024 at the Customs office in Port Dickson. Customs prosecuting officer Nur Nadia Mohd Rais then asked the court for a mention date for the submission of documents. The accused were unrepresented. Judge Mohamad Kamil fixed Oct 16 for mention.

'What happened to Rafizi's family could happen to anyone in the political fraternity or in other sectors in future,' he said. Calling for swift action from authorities, Roland said the demand for justice was not based on political privilege but on the fundamental rights of all Malaysians. 'Therefore, a prompt and thorough investigation should be initiated, not because Rafizi's family is more important or more valuable than other families, but because all Malaysians deserve to live safely in in this country,' he said.
