Marc Marquez outduels brother Alex for 'dream' Thai MotoGP win
It completed a dominant debut for his new factory Ducati team, with pole-sitter Marquez having romped to victory in Saturday's sprint at the Buriram Circuit for a maximum 37 championship points.
The Spanish great took his 63rd MotoGP victory by 1.732sec from younger sibling Alex, who is still seeking a first chequered flag, with Italian two-time world champion Francesco Bagnaia third.
Marc Marquez had opened a 1.5 second gap at the front in searing heat, when on lap seven he suddenly slowed on turn three with a tyre pressure problem to relinquish the lead to his brother.
Marc tucked into second spot, lurking ominously on Alex's back wheel for another 15 laps as he managed his tyres expertly and kept the pressure issue under control.
His strategy paid off as he made a decisive move with less than laps of the 26 to dive under Alex on turn 12 before stretching away to complete a second family one-two, after Saturday's sprint.
'I cannot ask for more'
"Yesterday I was happy, today I am super happy," said Marc Marquez. "I mean it's a dream. I cannot ask for more.
"We started this new journey in the perfect way, with pole position and a double victory, sprint and main race. I want to say thanks to the team.
"And to share this weekend with my brother is something unreal for our family.
"There are no words to describe how you feel when you are on the podium with your brother."
Another Italian, Franco Morbidelli, was fourth on a VR46 Ducati and Japanese rookie Ai Ogura fifth on his MotoGP debut for Trackhouse Aprilia.
"For one moment I thought I might hold on to win," said Alex Marquez.
"Leading was not easy. I just tried to ride, not to override and not make mistakes.
"But he was able to not use a lot of rear tyre and I was using up everything."
Marc Marquez enjoyed a strong pre-season with the factory Ducati, having joined from Honda, and is strongly fancied to win a first world crown since 2019.
"The last time I felt like this on a bike was at Jerez in 2020," he warned.
Marquez and two-time world champion Bagnaia have been hailed as a factory Ducati dream team but some observers have cautioned that the high-octane mix of two fast high-profile racers could prove too combustible.
"I gave my all," said Bagnaia. "But Marc, he was playing with us all day. So maximum ambition was to finish in P2 but we finished in P3.
"Honestly I tried, but I was like I was in the cinema watching," he added of the battling brothers in front of him.
"I am not here to finish third. It was the maximum I could but I will never settle for third place. Next time I will try to be second and then first.
"But I need to start work on my setup, on my bike, and close the gap to them."
Ogura, who came fourth in Saturday's sprint, put on a stunning performance on his main race debut to finish fifth for Trackhouse Aprilia, beating the factory Aprilia of Marco Bezzecchi, who was sixth.
Somkiat Chantra finished 18th as he made history by becoming the first Thai rider to take part in a MotoGP race.
The start of the new MotoGP season was overshadowed by the absence of world champion Jorge Martin.
The Spaniard suffered broken bones in his right hand and left foot in a horror crash during pre-season testing in Malaysia and more fractures in training a week ago, needing further surgery.
Aprilia said Martin would definitely miss the next race, in Argentina in mid-March, with no time frame put on his return to the grid.

Isak accuses Newcastle of breaking promises amid Liverpool interest
Alexander Isak accused Newcastle United of breaking promises and misleading supporters in a social media statement on Tuesday that confirmed he wanted to leave the Premier League club. The 25-year-old striker said he informed Newcastle of his desire to leave a long time ago. "When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue,"Isak wrote on Instagram stories. "Change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself." The Sweden international, who was the subject of a $148.34 million bid from Liverpool earlier this month according to media reports, was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the 2024-25 season. However, he chose not to attend the ceremony due to ongoing issues surrounding his future. "I've kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. This silence has allowed people to perpetuate their own version of events, even though they know it doesn't reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors," he added. "The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. Acting as if these issues have only just emerged is misleading." Newcastle said in a statement that no commitment was made by a club official that Isak could leave this summer. "We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract," Newcastle said. "We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views. "As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met. "This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates." Isak missed Newcastle's goalles draw with Aston Villa in their Premier League opener on Saturday, and Eddie Howe's side are set to play defending champions Liverpool on Monday.

Alcaraz wins Cincinnati Open
World number one Sinner came into the final feeling unwell and lost the first seven points of the match before throwing in the towel at 5-0 down in a game played in 30-degree Celsius heat. Sinner will now focus on recovery with the US Open starting on Sunday. The Italian is due to take part in the US Open's revamped mixed doubles on Tuesday, but his participation in that draw is now in serious doubt. "I'm disappointed, I didn't feel great from yesterday," Sinner said afterwards. "During the night, I thought I would recover a bit better, but it was not the case. "I just tried to go out for the fans, trying to give (them) a match - that's the reason why I went on the court. "But it was not meant to be for me today. But I don't want to take anything away from Carlos. He had a great week, great, great tournament again." Sinner said he is now pointing to the final Grand Slam of the season. "The main focus, obviously, is for the US Open. Recovery is the most important. And then we see," he said. Despite the temporary health setback, Sinner is pleased with his showings in 2025. "I feel like it's an incredible season," he said. "We'll keep going, keep pushing. I have some points to improve if I want to go far in US Open. "It was a good test this week, trying to understand where my level is." Sinner lasted for just 22 minutes, calling for the doctor after losing the fifth game and shortly after going to shake hands with Alcaraz.

Arsenal's Calafiori secures 1-0 win at Manchester United
Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori headed home an early corner, aided by a weak challenge from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, to earn a 1-0 victory at Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, spoiling the hosts' season opener. Despite a cast of new faces, Mikel Arteta's visitors proved they are still lethal from set pieces with Calafiori netting in the 13th minute. Arsenal's William Saliba backed into Turkish keeper Bayindir, who feebly batted the ball with one hand into the path of Italian Calafiori for an easy close-range header. United were otherwise the better team, with close-season signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu missing good chances. The home side had Arsenal pinned back for most of the second period and kept keeper David Raya busy, forcing him into a diving save to stop Mbeumo's powerful header. Set-piece specialists Arsenal have scored 31 league goals from corners since the start of the 2023-24 season, at least 11 more than any other team, and three of their last four league goals against United have been from corner kicks.
