Union power minister urges states to prioritise prepaid smart metering
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Saturday asked states to prioritise prepaid smart metering at government establishments including government colonies.
Addressing the regional conference of the power sector here, he said that the installation of prepaid smart meters at government establishments, including government colonies, will streamline optimisation of revenue from consumption of power.
"The installation of prepaid smart meters at government establishments, including residential colonies, will not only optimise revenue generation from power consumption but help reduce operational losses of the entities involved in power generation, transmission and distribution network," he said.
The regional conference was attended among others by Tripura's Power minister Ratan Lal Nath, Meghalaya Power minister A T Mondal, Mizoram Power minister F Rodingliana and Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
The Union Power minister also underlined the importance of a future-ready, modern, and financially viable power sector to fuel the country's growth on its journey towards becoming a developed nation.
"The growth of power sector is important for achieving the goal of 'viksit Bharat'," Lal said, adding that the regional conference would help in identifying specific challenges and solutions with respect of the power sector of the North Eastern states.
He said that despite the minor gap of 0.1 per cent in meeting current power requirements, efforts must continue to meet future demands.
Since 2014, power generation has increased significantly through various modes of generation, including thermal, hydro, atomic, and renewable energy, he said and urged the power utilities to further augment generation.
Addressing environmental concerns and moving towards non-fossil power is essential for achieving the target of net zero emissions, Lal said.
He mentioned that through government schemes like RDSS and PM-JANMAN, difficulties in the distribution sector are being addressed, and left-out households are being electrified.
The Power minister highlighted that the distribution sector faces challenges due to poor tariff structures, suboptimal billing and collection, and delayed payments of government department dues and subsidies.
"It is essential to reduce the AT&C losses and the gap between the average cost of supply and average revenue realised, to ensure that the distribution sector becomes viable," he said, adding to achieve that, it is essential that the tariffs are cost-reflective.
Lal said states should work towards ensuring energy security and given the hydro-power potential, including pumped-storage, in the North Eastern region, the states should make efforts to effectively utilise that potential.
In his welcome address, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang highlighted the various steps taken by his state towards improving the quality and reliability of power supply.
He said that the state government proposed to take measures to further improve the power sector for which the interventions from central government will be required to resolve various issues.

Kanpur: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said the govt will open procurement centres for maize and declare the minimum support price (MSP) for the crop soon. Addressing a gathering under 'Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan' at Ajitmal in Auraiya, the CM accused the previous govts at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh of ignoring welfare of farmers. "For the first time in independent India, farmers became part of the central govt's political agenda in 2014 when Narendra Modi took over as the Prime Minister and several innovative schemes were introduced for their welfare," the CM said. "Farmers are now earning up to Rs 2.5 lakh per hectare. We assure farmers that we will soon open procurement centres and declare MSP for maize as well," the CM said. He said that the BJP govt recruited over 1.6 lakh teachers and asserted that hiring in various departments including PWD, irrigation and agriculture was done with complete transparency. "It's been a long time since Auraiya became a district. There was no police lines here, therefore, the facility is being constructed at a cost of Rs 272 crore. A bridge is being built over the Yamuna River for Rs 151 crore. A CM model composite school is also being constructed. Budgets have been allocated for agricultural science centre," he said. Devendra Fadnavis inaugurates new administrative building of MEDA in Pune
Maharasthra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the new administrative building of Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) in city's Aundh area, on Sunday. After inaugurating the newly constructed building, Devendra Fadnavis praised MEDA for its outstanding contributions to the renewable energy sector and told the mediapersons that Maharashtra is now the leading state in the country in solar energy generation, especially through distributed power models. He described the new MEDA complex as a prime example of 'green building' and expressed confidence that it will break new grounds in taking forward the state's pledge and thrust towards clean and green energy. The Chief Minister, taking to X, also shared video of the complex inauguration and wrote, 'Based on eco-friendly (green building), Super E.C.B.C. and Net Zero concept, it reflects the commitment to clean energy and decarbonisation, meeting every green building benchmark.' Fadnavis could also be seen in the video, inspecting the complex, unveiling MEDA's green energy achievements and milestones while also getting briefed by officials about its future goals. Home Ministry to resume talks with Kuki-Zo insurgents
After a gap of nearly two years, the Union Home Ministry is set to resume talks with Kuki-Zo insurgent groups in Manipur. The Hindu has also learnt from a senior government official that the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact would also be 'renegotiated with stringent ground rules'. It has emphasised that 'any political solution' would be subject to the SoO framework being in place. The SoO is a tripartite pact aimed at ensuring peace in the Northeastern state. It was signed back in 2008 by the United Peoples' Front (UPF) and the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), an umbrella of 24 insurgent groups; the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Manipur government. It stipulates that the groups would completely abjure violence and not engage in unlawful activity. In return, the security forces would not launch operations against the groups as long as they abide by the agreement. The pact has been periodically extended since 2008, except on February 29 last year when the Manipur government pulled out. As a precursor to hold talks now, the MHA has sought removal of SoO camps from locations close to the valley districts which are dominated by Meitei people. Security forces have suggested that the number of camps be reduced from the existing 14 to seven camps. Further, on the latest chain of events, The Hindu learnt from the senior official that there may be no immediate extension of the SoO pact. It could only happen after the negotiations are completed.
