Mamelodi Sundowns hope for upset in key clash against Borussia Dortmund
Sundowns, who were runners-up in the African Champions League earlier this month, sit on top of Group F after beating South Korean side Ulsan HD 1-0 in their opening game but expect to be on the back foot for Saturday's clash at the TQL Stadium.
For coach Miguel Cardoso, however, an upset result is possible even if the odds are slim.
'Upsets can happen when the mental conviction of the team is strong and their emotional connection is so strong that magic can happen,' he told a press conference on Friday.
'And that's what I will try to create as an ambiance in the team; ambition, conviction, determination and the right emotion to play such a game and produce a good result.'
But Cardoso expects that his side, who enjoyed the lion's share of possession in a dominant performance in their opening game, will not see much of the ball.
'We're going to play against a team that is very aggressive. It's a team that scores 40% of their goals from counter pressings.'
It will be an unusual situation for Sundowns, who dominate their domestic competition with a possession-heavy approach and are also a strong force in African continental competition.
'We won't be used to not having the ball much and obviously that will require us to be resilient and keep organised, even when you are just waiting for the moment to get the ball again,' Cardoso added.
Sundowns are the only African side with a win at the tournament.
'We are very proud of that. What has happened now is that we have opened up a chance for ourselves and turned dreams into objectives,' said Cardoso.
'But we know what we have ahead and it won't be easy.'

Schick extends Bayer Leverkusen contract until 2030
Patrik Schick has scored 81 goals and provided 12 assists in 168 appearances in all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen. (EPA Images pic) MUNICH : Czech striker Patrik Schick has extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen through to 2030, the Bundesliga club announced on Monday. 'Bayer 04 Leverkusen have extended the contract with Czech international Patrik Schick. The striker has signed a contract to 30 June 2030,' the club said in a statement on their website. Schick, 29, was an integral part of Leverkusen's unbeaten German domestic double-winning squad in the 2023/24 season. Since joining the Werkself in 2020, Schick has netted 81 times in 168 appearances in all competitions, as well as laying on 12 assists. Under the tutelage of now-departed coach Xabi Alonso, Schick contributed vital goals on numerous occasions as Leverkusen became the first club to win the Bundesliga without losing a match. He also lifted the German Cup and German Super Cup in 2024. 'I want to and will continue to contribute goals, that's my strength. In addition, I'm also looking to being a key part of the rebuild into a new team capable of winning trophies,' said Schick. The forward's decision to extend his contract bucks the trend of departures this summer from the Bundesliga runners-up. Alonso left to coach Real Madrid and has been followed out the door by star playmaker Florian Wirtz, as well as Jeremie Frimpong, Granit Xhaka and Jonathan Tah. 'With the rebuild in the next cycle at Bayer 04 we see Patrik as a motor of development,' said managing director of sport Simon Rolfes. 'He combines top-quality ability and an exceptional goal return with international experience and he will give the squad the necessary stability and structure.' Former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has replaced Alonso in the Leverkusen hot seat as the club starts down a new path. He and Schick will be supported in that project by the recent arrivals of centre-half Jarell Quansah from Liverpool, goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford and German creative midfielder Malik Tillman.

Soccer-Neuhaus returns to Gladbach training after four-week suspension
(Reuters) -Borussia Moenchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus returned to training on Monday following his weeks-long suspension and publicly apologised about a video in which he had appeared to mock the Bundesliga club's sporting director. Neuhaus was fined and suspended for four weeks in early July. "I would like to take the opportunity of returning to my team to once again apologise to the club management and Borussia's fans for my behaviour, especially to (sports director) Roland Virkus," Neuhaus said in a statement. "We have had a personal and professional relationship for many years, characterised by appreciation, respect, and trust. I will do everything I can to rebuild this mutual trust." In a video posted on social media last month, Neuhaus could be seen talking to several people wearing Gladbach kits about Virkus. The 28-year-old former Germany international appeared to call Virkus "the worst manager in the world" and referenced the sporting director's role in deciding his salary of four million euros ($4.71 million) per year. Gladbach had imposed a "heavy" fine on Neuhaus, reportedly around 100,000 euros. "Flo already apologised in an internal meeting four weeks ago," Virkus said. "We acknowledge that he is now making this public. For us, the matter is closed, and we expect Flo to now offer his full qualities in training and do his part to help us achieve our goals." Neuhaus joined Gladbach in 2017 and has made over 200 appearances in all competitions for the club, but mainly featured as a substitute last season and played just 17 times in the league as they finished 10th. TSG's de Bod scores top-20 finish at Circuito de Getxo
KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) concluded their Spanish classics campaign on a positive note at the Circuito de Getxo-Memorial Hermanos Otxoa race in the Basque Country yesterday (Aug 3). TSG's Stefan de Bod was again their stand out man as he crossed the line 15th (+31s), which was the highest placed finish by a TSG rider in Spain this year. The South African had placed 24th at the Ordiziako Classic last week where he also claimed the Most Combative Rider award. TSG started the 172.2 kilometre race, which started in Bilbao and ended in Getxo, with only five men as Vadim Pronskiy was ill while Anatolii Budiak had left Spain for the Trans-Himalaya Race in China which starts on Aug 7. TSG's Mathias Breghnoj concluded Circuito de Getxo in 46th (+3:49s) though Kee Zhe Yie, Nur Aiman Rosli and Nur Aiman Zariff did not finish. There were no surprises as heavyweights UAE Team Emirates-XRG notched a one-two finish through Isaac del Toro (3:59:11s) and Juan Ayuso (+20s). Cofidis' Alex Aranburu settled for third after being pipped by Ayuso. TSG had competed in three one-day races in Spain over the past two weeks - Terres de L´Ebre Classic (July 22), Ordiziako Classic (July 25) and Circuito de Getxo - which are all UCI 1.1 races.
