Robbers blow up ATM at filling station in Standerton, shootout ensue
According to Standerton police spokesperson, Captain Braam Robberts, five employees and a security guard were on duty at the time of the attack. One of the petrol attendants was sitting in his private vehicle in front of the kiosk when he was ambushed by two armed suspects, believed to have approached from behind the building.
The attendant was forced into the kiosk, where the rest of the staff were held at gunpoint and ordered to lie on the floor. Moments later, suspects detonated an explosive device to access the drop-in safe. A second blast targeted an ABSA ATM located at the front of the premises.
Kasselman Security Services (KSS) responded swiftly to the alarm, resulting in a shootout between a security officer and the suspects. Although several vehicles were hit by gunfire, including a Kasselman patrol vehicle and a stationary truck across the street, no injuries were reported.
A vehicle believed to be a Chevrolet Cruze (make and colour unconfirmed) entered the premises and collected some of the suspects. Others reportedly fled on foot in the direction of Secunda. Surveillance footage captured at least six individuals involved in the attack.
Robberts said the police recovered 38 spent AK-47 cartridges at the scene, along with a projectile lodged in the trailer of the truck. An undisclosed amount of cash was stolen during the robbery.
Security teams from Balfour and Secunda pursued possible escape routes out of Standerton but found no trace of the fleeing suspects. All relevant authorities attended the scene, and investigations are ongoing.

Connections emerge between the murders of South Africa's top DJs
The Alexandra Magistrate's Court has postponed the murder case against DJ Sumbody after four men who were arrested on Monday appeared in court on Tuesday. Image: X DJ Sumbody, DJ Vintos, Armand Swart, and Don Tindleni were killed using the same AK-47, and all died in the same way after they were killed in a hail of bullets at different times, arguably by the same suspects. This was revealed by the South African Police outside the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Tuesday for the appearance of alleged hitmen Musa Kekana, Michael Pule Tau, and Floyd Mabusela, who are now charged with the murder of Don Tindleni. Speaking outside Alexandra Magistrates Court, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe stated that the guns used to kill DJ Sumbody are the same as the ones used for DJ Vintos, Armand Swart, and Don Tindleni. The court postponed the bail application of the alleged mastermind behind Oupa Sefoka's murder, popularly known as DJ Sumbody to August 6, and all the accused were remanded in custody. The four each face three counts of murder and charges of unlawful possession of guns. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe indicated that the four men who are accused of killing DJ Sumbody have also been charged with the murders of DJ Vintos and Don Tindleni, with reports that DJ Vintos was gunned down outside a nightclub in Orlando East in March 2022. "This case relates to the murder of Hecter Buthelezi, DJ Vintos, as he was popularly known. He was killed in March 2022, outside a nightclub in Orlando East. He was killed in a hail of bullets. At the time, the suspects were driving a BMW X3. His killers were never found. We then moved on to the same year in November, where DJ Sumbody and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza, were also assassinated and killed in a hail of bullets in Woodmead. We then move on to March 2023, which is the second case of Tindleni," said Mathe. Tindleni, who was killed on the N1, near the N17 offramp while he was inside his 5 series BMW, was killed in a hail of bullets. That case was never solved. "We then move to April 2024, Armand Swart, who was then killed in a case of mistaken identity hit. Our investigation has brought us to this point, where we are linking the AK-47 as well as the three pistols that were found on the Armand Swart case. We are linking them to the killing of Armand Swart, DJ Vintos, and we are linking that same AK-47 to the killing of DJ Sumbody, his body guards as well as the Don Tindleni murder. "We have said previously that we do not only have the ballistic expert report that links these suspects to these hits, but there is other overwhelming evidence," said Mathe.

Arrest in Magaqa murder case brings family relief
Sindiso Magaqa was gunned down in 2017. Image: Independent Newspapers Archives The family of the assassinated former ANC youth secretary Sindiso Magaqa has welcomed the arrest of a former Umzimkhulu municipal manager. The manager was arrested by the Political Killings Task Team on Monday and will appear in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate's Court Tuesday. National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, said the 55-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday in Malvern, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The manager was named by the convicted hitman, Sbusiso Ncengwa, alongside the late provincial legislature deputy Speaker, Mluleki Ndobe, as the ones who masterminded Magaqa's murder. Reacting to the news, Dr Lwazi Magaqa said the family was happy that the real alleged mastermind behind his brother's murder has been finally arrested, adding that the family will provide a comprehensive comment after his appearance on Tuesday. 'We are happy that he has finally been arrested; however, we will give our full comment after his appearance tomorrow," said Magaqa. Ncengwa was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison following his confession to the murder and implication of several people, including the two accused, Sibonelo Myeza and Mbulelo Mpofana. The third accomplice, Mlungisi Ncalane, will not see his day in court as he had been declared mentally unfit to stand trial and has been confined to a mental institution. Ncengwa is now expected to testify against the two other accused, who were allegedly present during Magaqa's shooting on July 13, 2017. Magaqa died in September of the same year. Two councillors, Jabulile Msiya and Nonsikelelo Mafa, who were with Magaqa during the attack at a car wash, were also shot but survived. Another alleged accomplice, Jabulani Mdunge, who allegedly sprayed Magaqa and others with AK-47 bullets, died in a shootout with police. During the mitigation of his sentence, Ncengwa confessed that a day before the shooting, he went to Umzimkhulu from Durban to confirm Magaqa's identity. On the day of the murder, he spotted Magaqa arriving at the car wash he often frequented. The assailants were paid a total of more than half a million rand for the murder. Magaqa was killed for speaking out against a corruption-riddled tender to construct a local memorial hall. Cape Times
