Governors of Western states give mixed reactions to proposed federal land sell-off
A budget proposal from Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee would mandate the sale of more than 2 million acres of federal lands to state or other entities. It was included recently in a draft provision of the GOP's sweeping tax cut package.
At a summit Monday of Western state governors, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said the approach is problematic in New Mexico because of the close relationship residents have with those public lands.
'I'm open' to the idea, said Lujan Grisham, a second-term Democratic governor and former congresswoman. 'Except here.'
'Our public lands, we have a very strong relationship with the openness, and they belong to all of us,' said Lujan Grisham, who was announcing written recommendations Monday on affordable housing strategies from the Western Governors' Association. 'And selling that to the private sector without a process, without putting New Mexicans first, is, for at least for me as a governor, going to be problematic.'
Interior Department Secretary Doug Burgum is among the leaders from several federal agencies scheduled to attend the meeting of the association on Monday and Tuesday. Conservation groups vowed to stage public protests over plans to cede public land to development.
Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon voiced qualified support for plans to tap federal land for development.
'On a piece-by-piece basis where states have the opportunity to craft policies that make sense ... we can actually allow for some responsible growth in areas with communities that are landlocked at this point,' he told a news conference outside the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in downtown Santa Fe. 'There may be value there.'
Lee has said federal land sales under his proposal would target 'isolated parcels' that could be used for housing or infrastructure, and would not include national parks, national monuments or wilderness.
Land in 11 Western states from Alaska to New Mexico would be eligible for sale. Montana was carved out of the proposal after its lawmakers objected.
In some states, such as Utah and Nevada, the government controls the vast majority of lands, protecting them from potential exploitation but hindering growth.

MAGA Senator Mike Lee Posts Creepy AI Clip of Trump Rewarding ‘Big Balls'
Republican Senator Mike Lee has posted a disturbing AI-generated clip of Donald Trump placing the Medal of Freedom around the neck of Edward 'Big Balls' Coristine after the teen was the victim of a carjacking. The post came as the president finally addressed the 19-year-old ex-DOGE staffer by name in a Truth Social message on Thursday. Trump wrote, 'Edward: The Crime situation in Washington, just like our Southern Border where ZERO Illegals entered in the last three months, will be a safe place very soon. Thank you for your bravery and heart. Stay tuned!' Senator Lee has already posted the fake clip on his personal account this week, but he doubled down on Thursday with a caption about making 'DC safe again,' including 'Trump gives the Medal of Freedom to Big Balls.' The AI clip appears to show a fake Trump leaning into the computer-generated image of the teenager, before placing his hands on his shoulders. Senator Lee credited X user ALX with making the AI clip–the user's bio states they are an 'American supremacist'. ALX had posted the clip –made using Elon Musk's Grok technology–on Wednesday with the caption 'Give Big Balls The Presidential Medal of Freedom.' ALX's account has featured a string of pro-'Balls' content, from complaining about a lack of mainstream media coverage over the assault to posting an apparent tribute in Washington that read, 'Heal fast Big Balls, thanks Trump! Love DOGE.' As well as trying to hard launch the hashtag #BigBallsForDCMayor, Lee also backed Trump's latest passion project of a potential federal government takeover power of Washington D.C, adding it would lead to a restoration of 'law and order'. Crime in D.C. has become a Trump talking point this week after the president posted a graphic photo of the teenager, who uses the nickname 'Big Balls,' from Sunday's crime scene. Coristine was left bloodied after an alleged carjacking in Washington on Sunday. He was approached by at least two teenagers at around 3 a.m., according to a police report. Metropolitan Police arrested a 15-year-old male and 15-year-old female, both of Hyattsville, Maryland, and charged them with unarmed carjacking. On Wednesday, Trump referenced the teen, who now works for the Social Security Administration, in a press conference at the White House, without actually mentioning him by name. 'We have a capital that's very unsafe,' Trump said. 'You know, we just almost lost a young man, beautiful, handsome guy that got the hell knocked out of him the night before last and, uh, I'm going to call him now. We wanted to give him a little recovery time.' Trump continued, 'We just put a call into him. They're calling back in a little while, but he he went through a bad situation to put it mildly, and there's too much of it. We're going to we're going to do something about it.' On Thursday, Fox News' Gutfield co-host and ex-wrestler Tyrus called for more respect on Coristine's name. He added, 'The problem is we've worked so hard to water men down... and the ones who suffer the most are women. We need to praise this man, and we need to praise more young men for getting involved because men, it's time to get back in the game.' Trump backs Burt Jones in Republican race for Georgia governor in 2026
ATLANTA -- President Donald Trump has endorsed Burt Jones' Republican bid for governor in Georgia, a boost to the incumbent lieutenant governor's effort to set himself up as the 2026 frontrunner for the GOP nomination. Trump announced the nod Monday, noting that Jones was among the first Georgia Republicans to endorse Trump's first bid for the White House in 2016 and saying Jones 'worked tirelessly to help us win' in all three of Trump's bids. 'He has been with us from the very beginning,' Trump wrote on social media. 'I know his family well and have seen Burt tested at the most difficult levels and times.' Republicans including Attorney General Chris Carr are vying with Jones to be their party's nominee to succeed Gov. Brian Kemp, who can't run again because of term limits. Other Republican candidates who could enter the race include Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. 'We're fighting for election integrity, lower taxes, and to secure Georgia values — and with Trump's support, we're just getting started,' Jones wrote online Monday. But Carr has argued he is better positioned to win a general election. Republicans have won every governor's election since 2002 in Georgia, even as the state has become more competitive. Top Democrats seeking to end GOP dominance include former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, state Sen. Jason Esteves, former labor commissioner Michael Thurmond and state Rep. Derrick Jackson. Any Democratic nominee is likely to try to turn Trump's endorsement of Jones against him. 'For Burt Jones, fealty to extreme, partisan politics has always trumped doing what's right for Georgia — and that's why this endorsement shouldn't surprise anyone,' Democratic Governors Association spokesperson Kevin Donohoe said in a statement. Jones was one of 16 state Republicans who signed certificates stating that Trump had won Georgia in 2020 and declaring themselves the state's 'duly elected and qualified' electors even though Democrat Joe Biden had been declared the state's winner. Jones also pushed for a special session in Georgia aimed at overturning Biden's narrow win in the state. Prosecutors considered criminal charges against Jones but rejected the move, concluding Jones didn't act with criminal intent. Jones touted that peril as proof he is an authentic supporter of Trump in a speech at the state Republican convention in June in Dalton. 'I've been the Trump guy since 2015, not '16,' Jones said. 'I've taken all the battle scars and everything else. I know who ran and hid during 2020 and everything else. The circle is small.'
