Xperia 5 series remains absent for a second year
What might be a more noteworthy piece of news, however, is revealed by the lack of any Xperia 5 VII mentions.
Traditionally, the Xperia 5 line has served as the company's smaller alternative to the Xperia 1 series, with similar camera tech and chip performance but in a more compact form factor. But at this point, we might be looking at a second consecutive generation without the smaller Sony flagship.
Uncertain future for U.S. and other global markets
The new mid-ranger was spotted in a database listing with model numbers ranging from PM-1510-BV to PM-1515-BV, and carries the internal code name XQ-FE44. Based on this timing, the device could arrive later this year, possibly sometime in October. This new information follows the recent global launch of the Xperia 1 VII , Sony's current flagship for the year. So far, it's the only Xperia phone Sony has officially released in 2025. The emergence of a second model aligns with Sony's tradition of offering a more affordable Xperia 10 variant later in the year.No technical specifications have leaked yet, but the Xperia 10 series typically aims at the mid-range segment, offering lightweight designs, long battery life, and 5G connectivity in a more accessible package. Last year's Xperia 10 VI featured a 5,000mAh battery, Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, and a 6.1-inch OLED display — specs we may see lightly upgraded this year. The lack of new Xperia 5 seems to support speculations that Sony has abandoned this segment in favor of focusing on larger flagship phones and mid-range devices. Although, it might even be that Sony is slowly abandoning the smartphone market altogether The new Xperia 1 VII has yet to launch in North America, raising questions about Sony's commitment to that market. If this is any indication of the company's broader strategy, the upcoming Xperia 10 VII may follow a similar path of remaining limited to Asia and Europe, at least initially. For now, it seems the only Sony phones we'll see in 2025 are the Xperia 1 VII and the Xperia 10 VII. Hopefully, the latter performs better in its category than the flagship has in its own.

That is Sony's latest image sensor for mobile devices, which was introduced in June. The sensor features a technology called Hybrid Frame HDR. Sony claims that it greatly improves the dynamic range, leading to much better photos in difficult the camera specs, the Vivo X300 Pro is rumored to use the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chipset. The rumors about the Vivo X300 are a bit confusing, as there are claims it might have a 6.31-inch display, which is the same size as the Vivo X200 Pro mini. That could be a mix-up or a sign of a change of strategy for details about the Vivo X300 series should become available in the coming weeks. Last year, the Vivo X200 Pro launched in October, and there's no obvious reason for its successor to be announced later than October this Vivo doesn't operate on the US market, and it will probably continue to be limited to China and some other global markets. Despite that, I think Vivo has the potential to become an even more serious challenger to Xiaomi and Samsung. If the rumored hardware is paired with excellent software capabilities, there's no reason to expect outstanding photos from those devices.

Huawei's comeback continues as it reaches a goal for the first time in over four years

For the first time in years, Huawei has returned to the top of the Chinese smartphone market. During the second quarter of 2025, which ended in June, the beleaguered manufacturer owned 18% of the Chinese smartphone market according to IDC. Overall the number of smartphone shipments made in China during Q2 declined by 4% to 69 million units. Against this backdrop of weakness in the country, other Chinese smartphone manufacturers, such as Oppo and vivo, also showed signs of slumping. Even though it did take the top spot in its home market for the first time in over 4 years, Huawei did report a 3.4% decline in shipments for the quarter. The 12.5 million phones it delivered over the three months left it with an 18.1% market share. During the quarter, Huawei released the latest version of its photography-based flagship series, the Pura 80. The four models in the line included: Pura 80 Pura 80 Pro Pura 80 Pro+ Pura 80 Ultra The largest decline in Chinese smartphone shipments year-over-year during Q2 belonged to vivo. This weakness took vivo out of first place where it was during last year's second quarter and moved it to second behind Huawei. During the quarter, vivo's smartphone shipments dropped 10.1% to 11.9 million units, leaving it with a market share of 17.3% Apple fans are asking, "Where's Apple? Certainly, Apple is next?" But the answer to that is a resounding "NOPE." Actually, Oppo took third place, and the 10.7 million smartphones it delivered during the second quarter were 5% less than it shipped during the same quarter last year. Oppo finished the second quarter with a 15.5% slice of the Chinese smartphone market pie. For the first time in over four years, Huawei tops the Chinese smartphone market during Q2. | Image credit-IDC So now we are about to divulge which company was the fourth largest smartphone shipper in China during Q2, and we can tell those Apple fans out there that not number four. That spot belongs to Xiaomi, a company once known as China's Apple due to the designs of its smartphones that paid homage to Apple's iPhones at the time. Xiaomi was the only firm to hike its smartphone shipments in China during the second quarter, raising the number of units delivered by 3.4% to 10.4 million, giving it a market share of 15.1%. Lastly, in fifth place after shipping 9.6 million iPhones in China during the June quarter, Apple saw its phone shipments slip 1.3%. That left Apple with a 13.9% market share in China for the second quarter. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! We may earn a commission if you make a purchase Check Out The Offer

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7's greatest strength came from Exynos

This year, Samsung used its in-house Exynos 2500 chipset in the new Galaxy Z Flip 7 foldable phone. Using Exynos, and not a Snapdragon alternative, is primarily the reason why the company was able to price the Flip 7 the same as its predecessor: the Galaxy Z Flip 6. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 saw a considerable price bump over the Fold 6, due in part to the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite processor inside. Not only did Samsung avoid ( translated source ) that with the Flip 7 , but it also introduced a new budget foldable line this year with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. The Exynos 2500 is the same 3 nm chip that Samsung had initially planned to debut across the Galaxy S25 phones. Unfortunately for Samsung, yield issues prevented that from happening in time, and the company had to rely on the Snapdragon 8 Elite instead. Now, Samsung is trying its best to make sure that the 2 nm Exynos 2600 is perfected in time for the launch of the Galaxy S26 phones next year. If that happens, then the company may have a similar price-related surprise in store. Especially considering that Qualcomm has reportedly decided to increase the costs of its chipsets. The entire Samsung Galaxy S25 series uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite. | Video credit — Samsung Of course, it's no secret that many Samsung users prefer Snapdragon processors over Exynos. Historically, Samsung's processors have lagged behind Qualcomm's chips, both in performance and efficiency. If Exynos doesn't catch up soon, then the pricing upsides will come with the downside of somewhat reduced performance.I've been a proponent of the Exynos chips for quite a while now. Samsung may one day make the same kind of leap that Apple did when it introduced the M-series chips to the Mac and MacBook. For now, however, it's a bit of a compromise. The latest reports indicate that Samsung is still trying to improve the yields of the Exynos 2600. I really do hope that the chips can be ready in time, because otherwise we're very likely to see a price increase for the Galaxy S26 phones. Secure your connection now at a bargain price!
