‘Zero tolerance': Jacksonville Beach leaders and police prepare for large spring break crowds

Yahoo07-03-2025
Spring break is approaching and that means larger crowds and extra security concerns on Jacksonville's beaches.
Action News Jax told you last year about three separate unrelated shootings in a single night on St. Patrick's Day just as spring breakers crowded Jacksonville Beach streets.
In a statement posted to Facebook Tuesday, the Jacksonville Beach Police Department said officers will now be engaged in a 'zero tolerance spring break law enforcement surge.' The plan details extra officers being allocated to the streets at expected peak times during spring break and other major events.
'We have the Players Championship coming up, that's always a busy time in our hotels, bars and restaurants,' Jacksonville Beach mayor Chris Hoffman provided as an example. 'We have spring break, we have special events in our Latham Plaza and Sea Walk area. So we are really looking at all those dynamic factors on our calendar to plan ahead.'

Mayor Hoffman told Action News Jax Friday that alongside deploying those resources proactively, the city will be keeping an eye from above to respond to emergency situations at a moment's notice.
'We also have a camera system in our downtown area, that is focused on our more crowded sections of our beaches and our busier areas,' Mayor Hoffman explained.

Mayor Hoffman outlined one key thing families can do to help out police and stay safe this spring break in Jacksonville Beach:
'Our police department gets called a lot for lost kids or found kids,' the mayor explained. 'So that's one easy thing that people can do: keep an eye on your kids. Make sure you have a plan so that there are just less phone calls, taking our police officers out of their regular patrols.'

Putnam County man indicted on child sex assault charges

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says a 25-year-old man has been indicted on capital felony sexual assault charges. A grand jury handed down the indictment Tuesday morning against Logan Bangart of Interlachen. Read: Putnam County man arrested, accused of sexually assaulting a child Bangart is charged with sexual battery on a victim younger than 12 and lewd or lascivious molestation. This marks the second grand jury indictment on capital felony sexual assault involving a child in Putnam County since May. The sheriff's office said that because of how quickly Bangart gained the child's trust, they fear there could be other unreported cases. Detectives are asking anyone with information about Bangart to call 386-329-0800. If convicted, the indictment means the death penalty could be sought in this case. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] Click here to download the free Action News Jax news and weather apps, click here to download the Action News Jax Now app for your smart TV and click here to stream Action News Jax live.

Husband of missing Jacksonville mom of 5 in Duval County jail

The husband of a missing Jacksonville woman is in the Duval County jail Wednesday morning. Joshua Bailey, 40, was booked into the jail at about 10:22 p.m. Tuesday on charges of violation of injunction for protection against domestic violence and violation of probation/community control, according to jail records. Bailey is the husband of 34-year-old Kayla Bailey, a Jacksonville mother of five and a photographer who was last seen Monday at her home on Maxville Boulevard. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told Action News Jax on Wednesday morning that Joshua Bailey's arrest is unrelated to his wife being reported missing. JSO posted on social media Tuesday that they're looking for Kayla Bailey. 'Missing Woman: Have you seen Kayla Bailey,' the JSO post states. 'At this time we believe Kayla Bailey may be in danger, and we are asking for your help to determine if she is safe,' a portion of the post states. Couple had recent domestic issues A recent Jacksonville Sheriff's Office incident report states that Kayla Bailey and her husband were having issues. Their daughter told officers that Bailey left the home and took her children to her mother's place for several weeks but returned home last week. When the family reported her missing this week, the officer noted in the report that he believes she left on her own free will. Bailey's family said they believe Kayla Bailey is in danger. 'She has never run off alone and for this long,' Jola Bailey, Kayla's daughter, told Action News Jax. 'She is really weak, and she is not really doing that well.' Anyone who knows Bailey's whereabouts is urged to call JSO at 904-630-0500.
