'Don't Think Everyone Aspires To Play Tests': Cricket Australia CEO's Blunt Take

NDTV4 days ago
While the West Indies tries to determine a way to improve its once-fearsome test team, Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg warns that some rivals — without naming names — will go 'bankrupt' if they continue to play the longest form of the game. Greenberg, a former Australian Cricketers' Association chief who took over at the sport's national governing body in March, believes 'scarcity in test cricket is our friend, not our foe. I don't think everyone in world cricket needs to aspire to play test cricket, and that might be OK,' Greenberg told domestic media at an event marking 100 days to go before the Ashes series Down Under between England and Australia.
There are 12 full members of the International Cricket Council eligible to play test matches. They are Australia, England, South Africa, West Indies, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland.
But test cricket has taken a back seat to the shorter forms of the game — one-day internationals and the even more popular, made-for-television, Twenty20 matches. The T20 format includes the world's most popular cricket tournament, the Indian Premier League.
'We need to make sure we invest in the right spaces to play test cricket where it means something, and has jeopardy, and that's why the Ashes will be as enormous and as profitable as it is because it means something," Greenberg said.
There have been suggestions that a two-tier test system be developed so as to create more balanced results between the test cricket haves and have-nots.
West Indies this week held a two-day emergency summit for Caribbean cricket which included greats Brian Lara and Clive Lloyd. They are hoping to help create strategies to lift West Indies back toward the top of the international test format they dominated back in the 1970s and early 1980s.
The summit was called after a West Indies lineup scored just 27 runs in its second innings – one run short of the all-time test record for low totals — while losing the third of three tests to Australia.
Lara said after the summit that the Caribbean squad needs to take small steps to return to its once-vaunted place in test cricket.
'It's a long road, not something that's going to happen tomorrow,' Lara said, adding that the review was long overdue. "It was not about the 27 runs. If it was 57 or 107, would we be feeling any better? I don't think so. It's the fact we've got something to address.
'And for us to get back on top or be a competitive nation in world cricket, we've got to address these situations shortly, quickly and hopefully we can reap the benefit in years to come.'
Greenberg says it might be too late for some teams.
'A lot of traditionalists might not like that,' he said. 'I'm not suggesting I know the number that will play, but literally we're trying to send countries bankrupt if we force them to try to play test cricket.

India squad for Asia Cup: Major gaps and possible changes as report makes big claim on Gill, Siraj

India's squad for Asia Cup could see some big changes, but Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj may still miss out. We take a look at the major gaps in the Indian T20I squad and possible changes. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors are set to have a tough time when they meet on Tuesday (19 August) to pick the India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. A tough time because a lot has changed in Indian cricket since the last time they played T20Is against England in January-February this year. Shubman Gill, who was not a part of the T20I side, recently led the Indian Test team to a memorable 2-2 draw in England and is being seen as a frontrunner to make a comeback to the shortest format. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal could also come back. Similarly, Shreyas Iyer is touted by some as a certainty after guiding India to the Champions Trophy 2025 title win and the Punjab Kings to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 final. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Here's a look at India's last T20I squad: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Ramandeep Singh, Arshdeep Singh This squad is expected to see some big changes. Gill, Siraj to miss out on Asia Cup? Kuldeep Yadav, who missed the England T20Is due to a back injury, is expected to replace Ravi Bishnoi, or both spinners could come in, and Washington Sundar may replace Ramandeep Singh. Shami will not be a part of the squad as he is not fully fit, but Jasprit Bumrah is set to come back. The openers – Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma – and Tilak Varma and Surykumar Yadav have sealed their spots in the top four. However, it will be interesting to see if Gill and Jaiswal are picked after an impressive Test series. Even if they are picked, will they straightaway get into the playing XI despite Samson and Sharma's heroics? A report in Cricibuzz says that while selectors may want to pick a third opener, Gill currently trails Jaiswal and none of them may get picked, or only Jaiswal might, unless Gambhir swings things in Gill's favour. It also states that the hero of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, pacer Mohammed Siraj, may not get a call back to the T20Is. Gaps in India's T20I squad And while selectors face the pressure of picking Gill, the two major spots to consider for them are that of an extra batter or an all-rounder and the third seamer. There's little clarity on these two spots. The third seamer could be one among Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna, as per Cricbuzz, while Arshdeep Singh is also a certainty. Also, there's room to include one more batter in the middle-order. In their last T20I, India had three all-rounders in the team – Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel. While Hardik and Axar don't face any pressure, Dube may be dropped. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The selectors have a chance here to add Iyer to the squad, but in such a case, Rinku Singh, who was also a part of the XI against England, may drop to the bench, at least, as management may want to include an all-rounder like Sundar to the playing XI. This is a big decision that the selectors have to make. If they decide to add a batter, players like Riyan Parag are also an option. India's possible Asia Cup squad: Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Shubman Gill/Yashasvi Jaiswal/Shreyas Iyer, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh

Shubman Gill vs Yashasvi Jaiswal: R Ashwin Makes Bold Asia Cup 2025 Squad Prediction

The Ajit Agarkar -led selection committee is all set to pick the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025, with a number of bold decisions reportedly set to be taken. There are reportedly different opinions over the selection of Shubman Gill, India's newly-crowned Test captain in the T20I squad despite the splendid Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign he had for the Gujarat Titans. Only one of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswaly will seemingly be picked for the Asia Cup. For former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, that player has to be Jaiswal. Ashwin feels Rohit Sharma 's absence from the T20I format instantly opens the door for Jaiswal. But, the veteran spinner can't say the same for Gill, who has the Indian cricketing spectrum divided over his potential return to the shortest format. "There are a few talking points regarding the Asia Cup. The first question that comes to everyone's mind is whether Shubman Gill fits into the T20 plans because in the last World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal was the backup opener. So Jaiswal automatically gets a kick-in. Rohit Sharma is not going to be a part of that team, so Jaiswal automatically gets a look-in," said Ashwin on his YouTube channel. Several reports have suggested that India's opening pair for the Asia Cup will be Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. However, Ashwin feels Jaiswal is a certain pick in the team. There, however, is a tricky choice for the selection committee to make when it comes to picking one batter between Sanju Samson and Shubman Gill. "Now, who is going to be that other opener? Shubman Gill had an outstanding series. Can he return to the squad? Sanju Samson has had a fabulous run as a T20 opener for India. So I think it is a tricky state for the selectors," he added.

Asia Cup 2025: Should India risk Jasprit Bumrah ahead of home Test season?

With the Asia Cup 2025 team selection on the horizon, the Indian T20I side has got a major boost as fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has reportedly confirmed his availability for the continental tournament. Bumrah will be heading into the event from the recently concluded five-match Test series against England, where he featured in three matches and scalped 14 taking two five-wicket hauls in the series, the speedster was criticised during the five-match rubber as he missed the last Test despite India being 1-2 behind. Moreover, to add to his woes, both of his five-wicket hauls came in a losing cause in Leeds and at Lord' with Bumrah not being able to take India to victory through his seam magic, several fans and experts began questioning his effectiveness and commitment to the national side. The speedster will now likely return to make amends in the upcoming Asia Cup as India look to defend their crown against their Asian India need Bumrah in Asia Cup? However, given the fragility of Bumrah's body, will it be worth pushing him for the continental tournament, as India's young brigade has done a magnificent job in his absence in the T20I side? Even if Bumrah decides to sit out of the event, the likes of Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Avesh Khan, among others, are capable enough to carry the Indian pace attack on their in Bumrah's absence, the team will have enough bench strength to help India defend their title. Meanwhile, the star pacer could elongate his rest period for the four home Tests against West Indies and South Africa in October-November, where his experience will be paramount as India will be playing their first home season after Ravichandran Ashwin's series will provide a perfect opportunity for India to add crucial points to their World Test Championship tally and rise in the standings. Moreover, after the 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand in November 2024, the home series becomes all the more important as India will aim to restore their dominance under the leadership of the new captain Shubman Bumrah's presence for all four games becomes all the more important as India aim to revive their Test performance. As far as Bumrah's place in the T20I side is concerned, the speedster can make a comeback in the series prior to the T20 World Cup 2026 to get himself ready for the all-important gem need to be preservedDuring the fourth Test of the England tour, Bumrah wasn't seen at his best as he leaked 100 runs in an innings for the first time in his Test career and was also seen struggling physically as he was seen feeling his calf. If his body starts giving up midway through the Asia Cup, he could well be ruled out of action for good 6-8 months, which will further affect India's chances at the T20 World Cup India must tread lightly with Bumrah, given his long history of injuries. As far as the criticism of his workload management is concerned, the management needs to be smarter about which series he ends up playing and the ones he misses. A country which has seen its fast bowlers being milked for runs by the top batters of the world, Bumrah has come in as a beacon of hope, who has already surpassed all his predecessors with his Indian fast bowler being touted as the best bowler in the world across formats is a dream that Bumrah has made us live. Being a once-in-a-generation star, the speedster has earned every right to get the special care by the Board, given the fragility of his body. Maybe the fans and the pundits can do their bit too by being his constant supporters instead of jumping to conclusions without understanding the effects of his action on his body.- EndsMust Watch
