Musk is the US$350 billion Rocket Man who fell to Earth
THE popcorn emoji is out in force as the world's richest person feuds with its most powerful leader. Even Thierry Breton, the European regulator who was a frequent target of Elon Musk's ire, is at it. Still, as entertaining as the billionaire's spat with Donald Trump may be, it also carries costly lessons for a US$630 billion space economy dominated by Musk's Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX – such is the danger of co-dependence between de facto monopolies and increasingly protectionist states.
This danger wasn't high on the agenda at the peak of Trump's 'bromance' with Musk, when the then-president-elect described SpaceX's reusable rocket revolution in the way a Renaissance monarch might have praised a successful colonial expedition – with a mix of national pride, geopolitical influence and financial potential: 'I called Elon. I said, 'Elon, was that (landing manoeuvre) you?' He said, 'Yes, it was.' I said, '...Can Russia do it?' 'No.' 'Can China do it?' 'No.' 'Can the United States do it, other than you?' 'No, nobody can do that.' 'That's why I love you, Elon.''
Since then, the love has turned to stardust as the contradictions inherent in Musk's US$350 billion space empire spill over. The hypocrisy of a billionaire pitching himself as 'dark Maga' – 'Make America Great Again' – and taking a chainsaw to government spending while SpaceX (and Tesla) benefits from US$22 billion worth of government contracts is exacerbating the clash of egos, with Trump threatening to withdraw taxpayer support.
Meanwhile, Musk's casual threat – quickly withdrawn – to halt the Dragon capsule upon which the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) relies to ferry astronauts echoed the geopolitical blackmail exerted on the battlefield in Ukraine, where the billionaire has in the past halted attacks against Russia via SpaceX unit Starlink. These are high-stakes threats with huge societal costs.
We are no longer in the realm of enterprising conquistadors but conflicted taxpayer-backed trade empires. Even if Musk deserves credit for his part in SpaceX's domination in both rocket launches and satellite communications, with 80 per cent market share in the former and more than 8,000 Starlink satellites in orbit, the feud's weaponisation of space suggests innovation has taken a backseat to favouritism.
SpaceX's successes this year have not been on the launchpad but rather inside the corridors of power, where its market share looks like a lever for rent extraction instead of exploration. Rule changes to high-speed Internet subsidies have opened the door to Starlink awards, as has the prospect of a defence 'Golden Dome'.

Trump's tariff bullying of other countries has been reportedly accompanied by a push for regulatory approvals for Starlink. And putting a Musk ally atop Nasa appears to have been a last straw for the Maga movement.
While Nasa and the Pentagon remain heavily reliant on SpaceX, the silver lining to all this is that Musk's competitors must get the message and step up their game. US commercial space companies including Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin have been contacted by government officials about rocket readiness, according to the Washington Post (owned by Bezos).
Over in the European Union, which is desperately trying to not miss another technological revolution, governments are getting serious about reenergising legacy players such as Eutelsat Communications, which is in talks to raise 1.5 billion euros (S$2.2 billion) that would double the French state's stake to 30 per cent.
The continent is also eyeing its first 'hop' test of a reusable booster project called Themis, which I glimpsed while on a recent tour of Airbus and Safran's Arianespace manufacturing facility near Paris.
But one gloomy possibility is that a prolonged Maga-Musk war makes space a chillier place for everyone. Nasa is already facing hefty budget cuts; snapbacks and U-turns driven by personal rivalries won't inspire confidence. (Let's not forget Amazon once blamed Trump's personal dislike of Bezos for the loss of a US$10 billion Pentagon contract.)
And Europeans have a huge gap to close: A report by think tank Institut Montaigne notes that its military space spending is one-fifteenth the US', while Bloomberg Intelligence's John Davies estimates Eutelsat's OneWeb network requires an extra four billion euros or more of capital spending by 2030.
More mergers and more state meddling are likely in a de-Musking world – though hopefully with some lessons learnt ahead of time. BLOOMBERG

PHOTO: REUTERS VIENNA - The UN nuclear watchdog's 35-nation Board of Governors declared Iran in breach of its non-proliferation obligations on June 12 for the first time in almost 20 years, raising the prospect of reporting it to the UN Security Council. The major step is the culmination of several festering stand-offs between the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Iran that have arisen since President Donald Trump pulled the US out of a nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers in 2018 during his first term, after which that deal unravelled. Since Iran bristles at resolutions against it and this is the most significant one in years, it is likely to respond with a nuclear escalation, as it has said it will. That could complicate the current talks between Iran and the US aimed at imposing new curbs on Iran's accelerating atomic activities. The resolution also comes at a time of particularly heightened tension, with the US pulling staff out of the Middle East, and Mr Trump warning the region could become dangerous and saying Washington would not let Iran have nuclear weapons. Diplomats at the closed-door meeting said the board passed the resolution submitted by the United States, Britain, France and Germany with 19 countries in favour, 11 abstentions and three states - Russia, China and Burkina Faso - against. Damning report The text, seen by Reuters, declares Iran in breach of its obligations given a damning report the IAEA sent to member states on May 31. 'The Board of Governors... finds that Iran's many failures to uphold its obligations since 2019 to provide the Agency with full and timely cooperation regarding undeclared nuclear material and activities at multiple undeclared locations in Iran ... constitutes non-compliance with its obligations under its Safeguards Agreement with the Agency,' the text said. A central issue is Iran's failure to provide the IAEA with credible explanations of how uranium traces detected at undeclared sites in Iran came to be there despite the agency having investigated the issue for years. The May 31 IAEA report, a board-mandated 'comprehensive' account of developments, found three of the four locations 'were part of an undeclared structured nuclear programme carried out by Iran until the early 2000s and that some activities used undeclared nuclear material'. US intelligence services and the IAEA have long believed Iran had a secret, coordinated nuclear weapons programme it halted in 2003, though isolated experiments continued for several years. Racing sailors to double as ocean scientists in European waters Every yacht in this summer's Ocean Race Europe will double as a floating laboratory, gathering vital ocean data as crews battle their way between seven iconic European ports, organisers say. The fleet will gather measurements on water temperature, salinity, oxygen, CO2 levels, microplastics and environmental DNA during the offshore competition from August 10 to September 20. Some teams will deploy drifter buoys designed to transmit meteorological information for years afterward. "We know conditions in our ocean are changing rapidly but scientists need more data to better understand what is happening, the pace of change and how this impacts ocean health," said Lucy Hunt, Ocean Impact Director of The Ocean Race and a marine biologist. "Due to the vastness of the ocean, reliable data is very sparse, and there are many areas that are undersampled." The race begins in Kiel, Germany and visits Portsmouth, Porto, Cartagena, Nice, Genova, and Montenegro's Boka Bay. Organisers report that the 2023 around-the-world race generated more than 4 million data points for researchers. "By putting different configurations of The Ocean Race Science Instruments on different race boats we can broaden the scope of the data we collect," said Stefan Raimund, Scientific Advisor to The Ocean Race. The Ocean Race Europe is a multi-stage offshore sailing competition organised by the same group behind the round-the-world Ocean Race. It features top-tier IMOCA 60 and VO65 yachts crewed by mixed-gender teams. The IMOCA 60 and VO65 are elite ocean racing yachts at the heart of major offshore events. The 60-foot IMOCA is a foiling, carbon-fibre monohull designed for solo or short-handed races, while the 65-foot VO65 is a one-design yacht used in fully crewed races like The Ocean Race. [SINGAPORE] Singapore needs to welcome Bitcoin-related businesses to maintain its status as a global financial hub, said retired businessman Jeremy Tan at an event on Wednesday (Jun 11). The 34-year-old rose to prominence last month during the general election as one of just two independent candidates, pulling in 36.16 per cent of the votes in Mountbatten SMC. He lost to the People's Action Party's Gho Sze Kee. During the nine-day campaign and on his election website, Tan promoted Bitcoin as an inflation-proof asset that Singaporeans should have. He also proposed several policies, including the creation of a Singapore dollar-denominated Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF). At a fireside chat hosted by cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, Tan said that he believes Singapore will have an advantage in the global economy if the government creates Bitcoin-related laws. 'We need to recognise Bitcoin as a separate entity from other forms of cryptocurrencies,' he told an audience of some 200 people, mostly males in their late teens and early 20s. 'The difference between the previous Bitcoin cycle and the current Bitcoin cycle is that the bad actors are no longer in the market.' The American's crypto exchange, FTX, collapsed in 2022, and he is now serving a 25-year sentence for committing fraud; he stole US$8 billion from customers. Saad Ahmed, Asia-Pacific head at Gemini and the host of the fireside chat, pointed out the increasing institutionalisation of cryptocurrency. He said one of the key catalysts of this is the approval of Bitcoin ETFs. As at Thursday, the largest such ETF by market cap, iShares Bitcoin Trust, had a 16.57 per cent year-to-date return. Its market cap stands at US$72.6 billion. Tan said that companies trading Bitcoin earn from the cryptocurrency's volatility, adding that that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should consider investing their reserves in Bitcoin. 'If we can change the way SMEs think about Bitcoin as a treasury, then we can change the way SMEs become more productive going forward.' He also said that there is a growing market for advisory services for SMEs which wish to invest in the cryptocurrency. 'There are many companies here that want to store (their treasury) in Bitcoin, but they do not know how to structure their business to do so,' he said. He added that unless the Singapore government starts to reform its Bitcoin laws, the advisory services industry will not be able to grow.
