MPs urge new CJ to continue defending judiciary's independence
This was because of Wan Ahmad Farid's background as a former Umno leader, and he is also seen as more junior than some other judges, they said in a joint statement on Friday (July 18).
It was issued by Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli (Pandan), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (Setiawangsa), Wong Chen (Subang), Rodziah Ismail (Ampang), Zahir Hassan (Wangsa Maju), Datuk Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik (Balik Pulau), Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (Ledang), S. Kesavan (Sungai Siput) and Onn Abu Bakar (Batu Pahat).

The MPs said that Wan Ahmad Farid's appointment, together with those of Datuk Abu Bakar Jais as Court of Appeal president and Datuk Azizah Nawawi as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, completes the top leadership of the judiciary for the time being.
They hoped that Wan Ahmad Farid would accept the different views of his appointment with an open mind.
'It should serve as a guide and encouragement to prove that his leadership will defend the independence of the judiciary, surpassing the excellent record of Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.
'We hope Wan Ahmad Farid will continue efforts to strengthen the independence of the judiciary and resolve several issues, including finalising the appointment of 31 vacancies for judges as soon as possible, to avoid disruption to the flow of judicial administration.
'The appointment of judges should be based on merit and seniority, so that it is fair to judges who have served for a long time and are responsible for maintaining the quality and good reputation of the judiciary,' they said.

They added that the appointment of judges must follow due process under the Federal Constitution and the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2009 without any interference to manipulate, control, or influence the process that is contrary to the principles of the independence of the judiciary.
They urged that issues that have been raised in previous JAC meetings, including follow-up action to investigate allegations of attempting to influence judicial decisions made against a Federal Court judge, be resolved.
Additionally, they highlighted that the recent crisis in the appointment of judiciary leadership signals the need for reforms to further strengthen the process of appointing judges, so that this matter does not recur.
They pointed out that the administration under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should not view the matter as completely resolved without improvements to the judicial appointment process.
To this end, they proposed that the prime minister's power to reject the list of nominations from the JAC be improved and limited, with an official reason (either to the JAC or Parliament) required as to why a candidate screened by the JAC has been rejected.
Other proposals include candidates from the legal bodies of the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak automatically appointed to the JAC, reducing the prime minister's power to appoint the majority of JAC members.
'We also propose that Parliament be involved in confirming the nominations from the JAC before they are brought to the prime minister, either in the form of a confirmation hearing as is the case in other countries, or the form of a parliamentary vote (according to a voting mechanism that can be determined later).
'We will continue to pay attention to these matters so that there is a voice from the backbenchers to ensure that this reform process can continue,' they said.

New villages welcome news on 13MP incentives
Chinese new villagers want better basic infrastructure, job opportunities and more community spaces as the Government pledges support under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had said the socio‑economic level of Chinese new villages would be strengthened through the Kampung Baru Development Master Plan, which would provide financing for entrepreneurial activities, including the preparation and upgrading of hawker sites. Lim says the Prime Minister's announcement on 13MP is encouraging. At Selangor's Seri Berjuntai New Village in Bestari Jaya, which has about 2,500 residents, village chief Chiang Yoke Leong said employment prospects were limited. 'There are more job opportunities in other towns like Ijok,' he said. On infrastructure, Chiang said that while some drainage upgrades have been carried out, those projects were 'few and far between'. He also highlighted the lack of a waste collection facility, adding that tourism had yet to take off in the village. 'Most people bypass our village, but with funding and new proposals we hope to build up some kind of cottage industry or tourist sites,' he said. Kampung Cempaka New Village chief Theresa Lim said Anwar's announcement was encouraging. 'It is good news for new villages,' she said. Lim said that while most residents in the Petaling Jaya village were senior citizens, a younger community still remained. 'There is potential for them to get some kind of funding to start a business in the village. 'As for infrastructure, the situation can be improved with better roads and proper drainage,' she said. Give addendum same respect as unity govt order, says Najib's son
Nizar Najib said failure to implement the royal order could damage public trust in the government and respect for royal directives. KUALA LUMPUR : The government has been urged by Nizar Najib, son of former prime minister Najib Razak, to accord the same respect and urgency to a royal order on his father's house arrest request as it did to the call that led to the formation of the unity government. 'This issue (of the addendum) has been going on forever. How much longer are we going to drag this out when the decree already exists?' he said at a press conference here today. Nizar, who is Najib's eldest son, said failure to carry out the order could damage public trust and respect for royal directives. 'It's the same as when we honoured the royal decree to form the unity government. No one questioned it and, in fact, everyone supported it. So what's the difference between the decree to form the unity government and the one to implement the addendum?' he said. Last week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government will follow-up on the royal order as soon as possible following legal procedures 'but it depends heavily on the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which we must all respect'. The addendum was made to a Pardons Board decision to reduce Najib's sentence of a jail term and fine, and purportedly orders Najib's jail sentence to be served under house arrest. Najib had been convicted of corruption and abuse of power in the SRC International case. The Federal Court was told on July 9 that Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar had on July 2 acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid. At the press conference, Rosmadi Ismail, chairman of the NKB1Msia Club, called on the prime minister to take full responsibility in ensuring the addendum is implemented. He said Najib deserved fair and just treatment under the law as a statesman who had contributed significantly to national development.
