Holocaust survivor says he's alive because family hid him in Holland
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester Holocaust survivor said he is alive today because of a Christian family who hid him in Holland as a child. Carl Wetzstein shared his story as a speaker Monday night for International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
'One day, a man came to the house. He said, 'I'm here to pick up your son.' He told [my parents] 'You've got to send him with me now. He has a good chance to survive the war,'' Wetzstein said.
Wetzstein said he lived with that family's nephew and attended school and church while he was placed with them. He said his parents survived the war, and they were later reunited.
'My mother came and picked me up,' Wetzstein said. 'I still remember seeing [what looked like] walking skeletons.'
Wetzstein said despite the hardships, he managed to live a relatively normal life under the circumstances. He told News 8 it's important to recognize the Righteous Among the Nations — those that protected the Jewish neighbors like that family did for Wetzstein.
'Of all the horrors with the Holocaust, people have to know that there were people who helped Jews, and risked their lives for that,' Wetzstein said.
Some of those Righteous Among the Nations who risked their lives to help Jewish people have local ties. Guest speaker and Albion High School Assistant Principal Tara Devay highlighted their bravery in her speech, and said it's also important to hear survivors' stories to inspire action against injustice.
'One of the things that survivors have said over and over again, why they speak is so that people will know their stories once they're gone,' Devay said. 'And one of the things I've always said to my students now that you've heard these stories, now it's on you. You heard it. Your job now is to bear witness.'
Those who spoke at Monday's event said they have had many local educators sign up for the Holocaust Educators Network, a program said to provide teachers with the skills they need to make the Holocaust relevant for today's students.

A metal detectorist in Germany has discovered a Viking Age hoard that includes about 200 riches from the European world, including Arabic coins, ingots, and a pendant that may be a cross or an unfinished Thor's hammer. If the pendant is a cross, it's "possibly an early sign of the onset of Christianisation" in the region, Birte Anspach, a spokesperson for the State Archaeological Office of Schleswig-Holstein, told Live Science in an email. The hoard was found in northern Germany near Haithabu, an important maritime trading center during the Viking Age (A.D. 793 to 1066). Christianity started spreading at Haithabu when St. Ansgar traveled there in the ninth century. "However, it was not the case that Ansgar came — and suddenly everyone turned away from the old gods and followed the Christian faith," Anspach said. "Christianisation was a long process that spanned several generations." For the next century, most people around Haithabu remained pagan. But archaeologists have found Christian symbols in burials there from this time, so this pendant may be one of the few that belonged to an early convert. The eyelet on the pendant is "located on the longer part of the 'cross', so that the piece hangs upside down when worn," Anspach noted. It's also possible that the pendant is an unfinished Thor's hammer. Such pendants symbolized adherence to the old Norse gods as Christianity was taking root in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. In Norse mythology, the divine hammer — known as Mjölnir — was crafted by dwarves for the gods of Valhalla, and Thor later used it in his war against giants. The 1,000-year-old hoard was found by Arjen Spießwinkel, who is part of a volunteer detector group in Schleswig-Holstein. All volunteers go through a four-day training course and an exam before getting permission to inspect the area with a metal detector. Spießwinkel, who has already made several historical finds, was recently traveling along the Schlei, an arm of the Baltic Sea next to Haithabu, when he found the hoard and then notified state archaeologists, Anspach said. "These finds offer fascinating insights into the history of the 10th century — a time of intensive trade, cultural exchange and religious change," Anspach said. "It is therefore not surprising to discover a hoard near the Schlei. Whether it is actually a hidden depot or whether there was a settlement nearby cannot be said for certain at this stage."

The family of Carolynn Jo Watson Sharp announces her passing on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at the age of 82. Known to many as 'Jo' or 'Aunt Jo,' Carolynn lived a life defined by kindness, faith, and devotion to her family. Carolynn was born on Jan. 31, 1943, in Merryville, La., to Stella Swilley Watson and Alvin Watson. She graduated from Merryville High School and McNeese State University, preparing for her lifelong calling as a teacher. Carolynn dedicated her entire professional career to teaching, becoming a beloved kindergarten teacher whose gentle guidance touched countless young lives. Even outside the classroom, she was drawn to children, always quick to offer a smile, a wink, or a kind word that brightened their day. In 1965, Carolynn married Malcolm Sharp. Together they shared 45 years of marriage, raising two sons, Mac and Marty, and building a home rooted in love and Christian faith. Carolynn was an active member of both Green Oak Baptist Church and Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Merryville, and she served as a counselor for Campers on Mission. She had a gift for encouraging others, always sharing just the right Bible verse to provide comfort and strength during difficult times. Her quiet prayers and unwavering love became a source of strength for many family members and friends throughout the years.
