New AKG Centre building inaugurated
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Polit Bureau member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], inaugurated the new AKG Centre, headquarters of the party's State committee, here on Wednesday.
The nine-storey solar powered building, spread over 60,000 square feet, has facilities for the State committee offices, hall for press conferences, office rooms for Polit Bureau, Central committee and State committee members, studio, two floors underground for parking.
The new AKG centre is the second building in the State to have a Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA)-4 rating, endorsed by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The old AKG centre, inaugurated in 1979, will continue to house the party's research and studies centre, which organises the International Congress on Kerala Studies. The public meeting after the inauguration began with a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the terror attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday and Pope Francis.
Played key role
Mr. Vijayan, who credited former State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan for playing a key role in the construction of the new headquarters, said that the party has over the years overcome severe challenges to attain the position of strength that it currently occupies.
'Every time the Left Democratic Front (LDF) gained power, it has implemented programmes to ensure Kerala's progress. The governments that came in between tried to reverse these gains, but were prevented from doing so due to the strong resistance through mass protests. The LDF has over the past two tenures implemented projects including the National Highway, coastal and hill highways, which were thought to be impossible, in addition to unprecedented achievements in every sector,' said Mr. Vijayan.
He said that the right leaning mainstream media in the State has since the early days been running a campaign of lies and fake propaganda against the CPI(M). 'When the AKG centre came under attack, the media even claimed that CPI(M) workers were behind the attack. However, these claims were disproved when the real culprits were caught. They even tried to create a fake narrative on the inauguration of this new headquarters, claiming that an auspicious day was chosen for it. We chose it because this was the only available date which does not clash with our other commitments,' he said.
Third consecutive shot
CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby said that the left and the CPI(M) have to be strengthened in the country to put up resistance against the neo-fascist forces that are currently in control of the country. Kerala is expected to take the lead in giving a direction to the left forces. He expressed confidence that the LDF will be able to have a third consecutive shot at power if it continues to be vigilant in its ground work.
CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan, who presided over the function, said that the party has played a big role in the creation of modern Kerala. Leaders of the various constituent parties of the LDF, Ministers, MLAs, MPs and party workers from various walks of life were present at the inaugural ceremony.

NEW DELHI: Just as Rome was not built in a day, the CPI (Maoist), once the source of Red terror across 10 states, wasn't rendered headless in a day, with its heavily depleted strength of around 300 armed cadres now scattered across the Dandakarenya region and a few other pockets, leaving the outfit in "tatters". It has taken several blows to chip away at the CPI (Maoist) top leadership, defined by two apex bodies, the politburo (PB) and the central committee (CC), before the Chhattisgarh Police eliminated the outfit's No. 1-Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju-with his entire protection team. Since 2005, 14 PB members have been arrested or killed or have died due to illnesses. This has shrunk the PB to just four active members-Muppalla Laxman Rao alias Ganpathy, Mallojula Venugopal alias Abhay, Thippiri Tirupathi alias Deoji, and Misir Besra. Sources indicated that either Abhay or Deoji, both from Telangana, may have take up Basavaraju's mantle, though there is no statement yet from CPI (Maoist) on the succession. Every PB member is part of the CC but not vice versa. The CC numbers too have dwindled, with 26 non-PB members lost since 2007 to arrests, surrenders and death by illness. It now has 14 active members, including the four PB leaders. Foreign aid and financial woes
When reports last week stated that the Chief Minister's Relief Fund of Maharashtra had been allowed to receive foreign contributions under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), the CPI(M)-led Left government in Kerala was quick to depict this as yet another act of discrimination against the southern State by the Centre. It recalled that the Centre had declined the Kerala government's plea for accepting foreign aid in the days following the 2018 floods — a catastrophe that left large-scale destruction in its wake. Kerala Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal said that while his State welcomed the approval for Maharashtra, it believed that it was unbecoming of the Central government to indulge in 'political bias' in moments of great crisis. He stressed that it is important that the Centre treats every State equally. He added that it was unfortunate that politics, and not the scale of disasters, had become the yardstick in such matters. This was an apparent reference to the fact that the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition governs Maharashtra. In the aftermath of the floods, the Centre had sparked a controversy by declining permission for Kerala to accept foreign aid, including a reported ₹700 crore offer from the UAE. Kerala's discomfiture with the foreign aid nod to Maharashtra is the latest episode in a protracted stand-off between the State and Centre. Kerala believes that it is being discriminated against, and denied its fair share of financial resources by the Centre. It has repeatedly complained about drastic cuts in financial allocations to it, and the 'unfair limits' placed on its fiscal space. The Kerala government had taken the battle over restrictions on its borrowing capacity to the Supreme Court. On the political front, the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) has consistently accused the Centre of attempting to 'financially choke' Kerala. It has blamed the Centre's skewed policies for the State's financial woes. The State government believes that recent Union Budgets have also caused disappointment to the State, as they have ignored pressing demands on the financial front. For instance, Kerala's plea for a ₹24,000 crore economic package to prop up its finances were not mentioned in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 Union Budgets. More recently, the government slammed the Union Finance Ministry for cutting a little over ₹3,300 crore from its borrowing limit for the 2025-26 fiscal under the pretext of the Guarantee Redemption Fund. The foreign aid nod to Maharashtra also presented the LDF government an opportunity to reiterate its dismay over the Centre's approach to the deadly July 30, 2024, landslides in Wayanad district. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Kerala government had announced plans for a structured rehabilitation programme, which included the building of townships with amenities for survivors. Mr. Balagopal said that the people of Kerala had, on two instances, expected Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce special aid to Wayanad: first, when he visited that district in August last year; and second, when he visited Thiruvananthapuram to inaugurate the seaport at Vizhinjam. On both occasions, their hopes were dashed, he said. Time and again, Kerala has accused the BJP government of paying scant regard to cooperative federalism — the driving spirit of Centre-State relations. It is evident that the trust deficit between the two entities on financial matters persists, notwithstanding the much-discussed breakfast meeting that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan hosted for Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman at New Delhi in March. It remains to be seen how Kerala's financial grievances concerning Union government policies will be addressed, as the southern State inches closer to a frenetic election season. The by-election in the Nilambur Assembly constituency in Malappuram district is scheduled to take place on June 19; elections to the rural and urban local bodies are scheduled to take place towards the end of 2025; and the Legislative Assembly polls are set to take place in the first half of 2026. In matters of State finances, Kerala will be keenly watching the recommendations made by the 16th Finance Commission led by Arvind Panagariya later this year. The State has sought a higher share of resources, arguing that its share of the divisible pool was brought down to 1.92% under the 15th Commission from 3.88% under the 10th.

Setback for forces in Chhattisgarh's Sukma: ASP Akash Rao Girepunje killed in Maoist IED blast
In a major setback for security forces, an additional superintendent of police was killed and two police officers injured in an improvised explosive device blast in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district. The IED was planted by Maoists near Dondra village on Konta-Errabor road. The incident took place when additional superintendent of police (Konta division) Akash Rao Girepunje and others were patrolling on foot after receiving inputs that an earth-mover machine was torched by Maoists in the area, an official said. When the police team reached the spot an IED exploded, causing injuries to ASP Girepunje, sub divisional officer of police Bhanupratap Chandrakar and station house officer Sonal Gwala, he said. All the injured personnel were shifted to Konta Hospital for initial treatment, he said. "Girepunje sustained serious injuries. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment," the official said. The 42-year-old ASP, who hailed from Raipur district, was recruited as deputy superintendent of police in 2013. He was serving as ASP, Konta since 2024, according to Bastar Police. Bastar Range IGP, Sundarraj P, said, "He was one of the bravest personnel of the Chhattisgarh Police who served in Maoist-affected areas like Manpur-Mohla and Sukma. Two other injured officials are reported to be out of danger. They were airlifted to Raipur for further medication." "At present, the Left-Wing Extremists are on the backfoot and the organisation is completely weak. They do not have the courage to face the security forces directly. Therefore, they have resorted to targeting our brave forces and civilians. They have been using IEDs for killing innocent civilians and policemen," Sundarraj said, adding Bastar will be free of Maoists soon. "The Chhattisgarh government, police, all citizens and the police family stand firmly with the family of martyr Girepunje in this hour of grief. His sacrifice will further strengthen our commitment to completely destroy a cruel and conspiratorial organisation like the outlawed CPI (Maoist)," a police statement said. (With Agency Inputs)
