Form tuai rumah association to strengthen rural voice, says Selangau MP
SIBU (Aug 15): Longhouse chiefs, or 'tuai rumah', should form their own association to strengthen their collective voice in representing rural communities and addressing local issues more effectively, said Selangau MP Edwin Banta.
He said such a body would not only streamline the channelling of community concerns to the relevant authorities but also empower tuai rumah to coordinate action when public facilities are damaged or neglected.
'I often encourage tuai rumah to set up an association, not to burden them with extra work but to enhance their role in helping the people,' he said.
He made the remarks when officiating at the new site for Rumah Balahin Blaja Dickson in Pasai Siong Tengah recently, which was attended by some 30 tuai rumah from Pasai Siong and Selangau.
As an example, Edwin said that if a farm or plantation road is damaged, the association could press for immediate repairs from responsible parties instead of waiting for action from elected representatives or ministers.
He stressed that community leaders must take a proactive stance in holding companies or individuals accountable for any damage to public infrastructure.
'Who actually damages these roads—YBs or companies? This is something that needs to be addressed collectively and systematically through a legal body like the Tuai Rumah Association,' he said.
In addition to urging the formation of the association, Edwin called on longhouse chiefs to take a more proactive in official matters, such as submitting applications to relevant ministries and agencies for land surveys and securing legal land titles for their residents.
To broaden their knowledge and exposure, the MP has also organised educational trips for community leaders both within and beyond Sarawak.
'For instance, from Sept 19 to 21, 2024, I brought 40 tuai rumah to attend the 100th anniversary celebration of Rumah Samu in Betong.
'This was not just about eating and drinking, but also exchanging ideas and learning how to be better community leaders,' he said.
He suggested that the proposed Tuai Rumah Association could also plan its own educational visits as part of its leadership capacity-building efforts.
At the same event, Edwin presented RM24,000 as an initial grant for the construction of the new Rumah Balahin – a move aimed at improving rural community infrastructure. association Edwin Banta lead tuai rumah

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor posing with the Sabah Moto Day participants while sitting on a motorcycle. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 17): The State Government will allocate about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open up Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor said a total 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF. 'I would like to announce that the State Government is allocating nearly RM600,000 to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open up their EPF account,' he said at the Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday. Hajiji was also glad to note that Sabah Moto Day continued to grow exponentially attracting about 60,000 motorcylists and motor enthusiasts from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei this year. The presence of many riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the general public, he said. 'I am impressed to see the support shown by all participants, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion. 'We should view this gathering from a positive perspective, as it can contribute, to some extent, to the economic generation of our state due to the large number of participants and visitors in conjunction with this programme, he said. Advising participants of the Sabah Moto Day to prioritise safety while on road, Hajiji also hoped the gathering would help create greater safety awareness among the two- wheeler enthusiasts. The Chief Minister also informed the participants that the State Government viewed youths as asset, hence various initiatives have been implemented to develop the human capital. The State Government of today had spent a total RM1.33 billion including RM848.26 million for education assistance and RM485 million specifically for talent and skills development programmes from 2021 to 2025, he said. 'This has never been done by previous state governments. We are committed to develop our youths who are our future leaders,' he said. At the end of his speech, Hajiji also led the participants to offer Al-Fatihah prayer for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir.
