Melaka upgrades education facilities in Rembia with new schools
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh (pic) announced plans for a new Alor Gajah District Education Office building costing RM15.9 million.
A separate RM15.8 million will fund a new building for Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Vocational College.
The state has also proposed a new national secondary school to the federal government due to high student numbers.
Ab Rauf expressed hope for its inclusion in the 13th Malaysia Plan during a public event at Dataran Keris.
State officials, including Rembia coordinator Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, attended the ceremony.
Additional projects include a religious primary school in Kampung Rembia and a kindergarten in Kampung Sungai Petai.
JAIM has dedicated RM90,000 to upgrade two SRAs and Sekolah Menengah Arab Al-Faizin in Jelatang.
Healthcare improvements include RM8.6 million for Alor Gajah Hospital's second operation theatre, set for completion by April 2026.
Another RM1.4 million will repair the Alor Gajah Health Clinic's maternal unit roof, with RM435,000 allocated for Rembia Health Clinic maintenance. - Bernama

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 18 — Penang said today that resolving the rising traffic congestion issues in the state is important for the state to remain competitive, not only in the eyes of tourists but also investors. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state will be facing the 'nightmare of traffic jams' as a result of the construction of mega projects in the upcoming years. 'Some politicians will feel pressured as it was proven that when mega projects lead to massive traffic congestion, it can even be the downfall of any government. 'So, do not think it is not important,' he said in his speech at launch of the City Competitiveness Master Plan here. He said the proposed Mount Erskine underpass project, which does not cost a lot, is yet to be implemented due to financial constraints even after the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has acquired lands and enforce evictions for the project. Chow said Penang currently has ongoing mega projects such as the LRT project and the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway. 'However, pending the completion of those mega projects, we hope the federal government will grant funding, under [the 13th Malaysia Plan], for us to implement small-scale projects that could bring about positive impact in managing traffic conditions in certain locations,' he said. He also hoped that traffic management plans during the construction of the mega projects will be implemented effectively and efficiently. The chief minister said Penang needs infrastructure projects to resolve its traffic jams as mobility has become a main issue. 'Even with durians and nasi kandar to attract visitors, when they are trapped in traffic jams for an hour to two hours here, it will be a great disincentive for anyone to travel to Penang,' he said. He related how last week a major investor, who was scouting for investment locations in Batu Kawan, was trapped in a jam for two hours when travelling from Ipoh to Penang — but luckily this did not affect any investment decision. He said it is not good for foreign investors to have an image of Penang as a place constantly locked in traffic congestion.

PSC may summon Defence Ministry, MDIO officials over military leak
KUALA LUMPUR: The Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on Security is prepared to summon the Defence Ministry and the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation (MDIO) to explain measures to prevent further incidents of armed forces officers colluding with syndicates. PSC chairman and Ranau MP Datuk Jonathan Yasin said under current rules, the committee cannot summon agencies to testify on cases still being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) or police. "However, we can call them to discuss strategies and direction to ensure such cases do not recur in the future," he told Berita Harian yesterday. Jonathan said he would consult committee members on the proposal to summon Mindef and the MDIO director-general before making a decision. Earlier, Tanah Merah member of parliament Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz, a PSC member and former deputy defence minister, suggested summoning military officials, particularly the MDIO director-general, to provide details on how the intelligence leak involving senior armed forces officers occurred. Ikmal described the involvement of senior officers in leaking information to smugglers as alarming, saying it raised questions on whether other compromises had taken place. "This is not just about patrol information in the south but also potentially sensitive details on issues like the South China Sea and military readiness. "My concern is greater because those detained are senior officers of the MDIO, a key branch of the armed forces responsible for handling intelligence, both physically and digitally," he said. One of the suspects, Ikmal said, was related to a former army chief. He also asked for clarity on what counter-intelligence measures ministry and MDIO had taken to address the breaches once exposed. Earlier reports said the MACC remanded 10 people, including senior military officers, as well as two journalists. The suspects were detained in "Op Sohor" by the MACC's Intelligence Division and its Anti-Corruption Tactical Squad (ACTS) in the Klang Valley after a 12-month probe. Preliminary investigations revealed the officers leaked operational military information to smugglers bringing in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, worth about RM5 million a month. They are believed to have received between RM30,000 and RM50,000 in bribes for each smuggling trip, amassing more than RM3 million over the past five years.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat session today will focus on pressing issues including pork smuggling, the Pan Borneo Highway, and resignations in public healthcare. Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru) will question the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security on enforcement against pork smuggling by MAQIS. He will also seek details on arrests made for pork smuggling this year due to risks like Streptococcus suis and African Swine Fever.
