Inheritance tax will apply to pension pots... even if workers die before retirement as Rachel Reeves tries to fill financial black hole
The Chancellor announced last year that retirement savings will be subject to the levy from April 2027.
At present, the pots are passed tax-free to beneficiaries of a will.
Under the new rules, funds could be taxed at 40 per cent, the i paper reported.
HMRC confirmed to the outlet the tax will apply even if the saver had never accessed the funds.
It came after reports Ms Reeves is eyeing changes to inheritance tax to help plug public finances.
Policing minister Diana Johnson yesterday failed to dismiss speculation that Labour could introduce a lifetime cap limiting what a person can gift before their death.
Last week, a report by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research said Ms Reeves must find up to £50billion in tax rises or spending cuts.
Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride said targeting pension pots would be 'tantamount to class warfare'.

London 'stands with' Ukraine, David Lammy has said ahead of a summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin which the US president has described as 'high stakes'. 'Speaking to Andrii Sybiha today, I reiterated our enduring support and our commitment to work with the US and Ukraine to secure a just and lasting peace.' Mr Sybiha praised the UK for its 'principled stance on supporting' his country. After speaking with Mr Lammy, he said the pair had 'a meaningful conversation' about 'securing a just and lasting peace for Ukraine'. Mr Sybiha wrote on X: 'I value the UK's leadership in the Coalition of the Willing and its principled stance on supporting Ukraine. 'We focused on joint diplomatic efforts to bring closer a real peace for Ukraine and all of Europe. 'We also discussed ways to further enhance assistance to Ukraine, including long-term financial aid. 'We stand united in defending our shared security and democratic values.' Mr Trump boarded Air Force One to head to the summit at around lunchtime UK time on Friday. He had earlier posted the words 'HIGH STAKES!!!' on his Truth Social platform. In an interview aboard the presidential jet, Mr Trump told Fox News Channel his meeting with Mr Putin would 'work out very well'. He added: 'And if it doesn't, I'm going to head back home real fast.' Speaking to reporters, the US president said he wanted 'to see a ceasefire rapidly' and continued: 'I don't know if it's going to be today but I'm not going to be happy if it's not today.' He has previously said the US could offer security guarantees to Kyiv alongside European leaders, but 'not in the form of Nato', and added it would be up to the Ukrainians to decide whether to concede land to Mr Putin. Other UK Cabinet members have backed Ukraine in the build-up to Friday's summit. 'The UK's role is to stand with Ukraine on the battlefield and in the negotiations, and prepare, as we have been, leading 30 other nations with military planning for a ceasefire and a secure peace through what we call the Coalition of the Willing,' Defence Secretary John Healey told BBC Breakfast. 60 more people to be prosecuted for 'showing support' for proscribed Palestine Action, Met Police says

A further 60 people will be prosecuted for 'showing support for the proscribed terrorist group Palestine Action', the Metropolitan Police said. It comes after a chaotic London march last week saw more than a staggering 700 activists arrested. On Saturday, August 9, during a day of mayhem and farce, Left-wing protesters swamped London's Parliament Square in support of the organisation, which was proscribed by the Government last month as a terrorist group. Hundreds held placards declaring 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action' in deliberate 'idiotic' acts of law-breaking designed to overwhelm police resources and the courts. On Saturday, the Met Police announced that more than 360 people had been detained following the scenes of disorder - at an estimated cost of about £3million. Protesters were accused of a 'colossal' waste of millions of pounds of taxpayers' money after seemingly getting deliberately arrested by officers. However, in an update on Sunday afternoon, the Met said the number of total arrests had skyrocketed to 532 - with 522 of these being for people allegedly displaying placards supporting the proscribed terror group. One of those arrests took place at the form up of the Palestine Coalition march in Russell Square, but the remaining 521 arrests were carried out during the rally in Parliament Square. There were a further 10 arrests, which included six for assaulting police officers, one for racially aggravated public order, two for breaching a Section 14 Public Order Act condition and one for obstructing a constable in the execution of their duties.
