Daniel Levy: When I'm not here I'll get the credit from Spurs fans

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy predicted he will get credit from supporters critical of his time in charge once he has left the club. Levy has long been the target of ire from fans who point towards a dearth of silverware under his direction, as well as failure to build upon Premier League title challenges in 2016 and 2017 and the team's run to the 2019 Champions League final. Last season's 17th-place finish – a record low in the Premier League era – was partly offset by victory in the Europa League final which saw the club lift its first trophy since 2008. Former head coach Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked days after the win over Manchester United in Bilbao, dodged the worst of the anger directed from the stands as the team plummeted down the table, with supporters instead targeting the chairman for the club's apparent regression. "I think it's one of those situations (in which) when I'm not here I'm sure I'll get the credit," Levy told Gary Neville's The Overlap podcast. "When you come here and look at this wonderful (stadium), and the fact that other clubs are now trying to copy what we're doing, that should be a sign that maybe we did do something bold, and something right." Spurs moved in to their 60,000-capacity stadium, built on the former site of White Hart Lane, in 2019 and it quickly acquired a reputation as one of the best sports venues in Europe, regularly hosting NFL fixtures as well as large-scale music and other events. Yet frustration remains with the team's failure to mount a credible challenge for the Premier League and Champions League, though Levy admitted he was at a loss to explain the lack of success. "Nothing has changed in terms of our ambition," said Levy. "Having won the Europa League – thank you to Ange – you get a taste of it, but it's not enough. It's never been enough. "We've been in 16 or 17 semi-finals, seven finals, and we haven't won enough. We know need to use that as a springboard to keep winning. We've won two trophies in the last 20-plus years. We've been so close, so many times. "I can't really answer (why), because I'm not the one that picks the team, motivates the team." Former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, who was appointed to replace Postecoglou in June, will take charge of his first competitive match when Spurs begin the new season at home to Burnley on 16 August. He will do so without stalwart forward Son Heung-min, who has announced he will leave the club this summer and was given an emotional send-off in Sunday's friendly against Newcastle in his native South Korea.

Fernandes hits out at 'lazy' United after Everton draw

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes let rip at his teammates following their 2-2 pre-season draw with fellow Premier League side Everton, saying their performance was "lazy" and calling for further reinforcements. A second-half goal from Mason Mount had United on course for victory in Atlanta, Georgia after Fernandes's opener was cancelled out by Iliman Ndiaye, but a bizarre 75th-minute own goal by Ayden Heaven gifted Everton the draw on Sunday. The draw put a slight damper on the Old Trafford club's tour of the United States, after promising victories over West Ham United and Bournemouth last month. "It's been important for developing how we want to play and getting the new players involved too," Fernandes said. "We didn't want to finish in this way. Our performance wasn't the best and we were a little bit lazy today. We want to avoid that because with laziness you can pay at any moment." United had their worst-ever Premier League campaign in the 2024-25 season, finishing 15th in the standings, and are looking to strengthen in the transfer window, signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo - both of whom started against Everton. "It's improving. But it's not the place it needs to be. I don't want to take a dig at anyone but the club is doing the best they can in terms of the financial situation they talk about," Fernandes said. "But it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here, more quality to get everyone to step up a little more to get to the XI, and I think that is what the club are trying to do. "Hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that." Asked about Fernandes's comments, manager Ruben Amorim told reporters: "I think I'm happy for the players to have that feeling. It's saying that they understand the situation. So, it's a good feeling. "I think the momentum of the tour was perfect. We had the weeks to work with a good environment, good feeling, and then we go back to Carrington (training ground) and we are near to start the season. "We are going with the feeling that we need to do a lot of things (better)." United begin the new Premier League season against Arsenal on 17 August.

‘Add him to the bomb squad' – Man Utd fans demand Ruben Amorim sells £50million midfielder after shocker against Everton

The game was full of drama and frustrated Man Utd stars GART TO GO 'Add him to the bomb squad' – Man Utd fans demand Ruben Amorim sells £50million midfielder after shocker against Everton MANCHESTER UNITED fans have already grown frustrated with one of their star players - two weeks before the start of the season proper. Angry supporters have demanded that Manuel Ugarte is added to the club's "bomb squad" after a costly mistake in Sunday night's 2-2 pre-season draw with Everton. And Ugarte made a sloppy error to gift Everton their first goal of the match when he was dispossessed deep in his own half. Ugarte, who could cost Man Utd as much as £50.7m with add-ons included, was trying to dribble away from the box and launch a counter-attack when he had his pocket picked by Vitaliy Mykolenko. The Ukrainian easily stuck a leg out to rob Ugarte of the ball and tip it towards teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye. Advertisement READ MORE ON MAN UTD LOOKING TO SCORE? United supporters were less than impressed with the error, lashing out at Ugarte online afterwards. One wrote: "We need to somehow offload Ugarte and find a replacement ASAP. He's so so poor on the ball. Just well below par." While another added: "I desperately want Ugarte to be the man, but it's obvious we can't get any consistency in the midfield with him." Advertisement SunSport's chief reporter Martin Lipton's verdict on Man Utd's draw vs Everton... and it's worrying for Red Devils fans Ruben Amorim already has a "bomb squad" full of unwanted stars that he needs to offload this summer. Marcus Rashford was the first to go after sealing his loan move to Barcelona, while Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho are amongst the high-earning names that are heading for the exit doors. Rasmus Hojlund, who has also been linked with an exit, has vowed to stay and "fight" for his place in the squad, despite Amorim hoping to bring in Benjamin Sesko before the window shuts. Hojlund failed to find the net in Sunday's draw and found himself furious after Patrick Dorgu didn't square him the ball for an easy opportunity to build some confidence. Advertisement The misfiring striker lashed out at the woodwork instead, kicking the post before berating Dorgu for snubbing the pass in favour of going for goal himself. Hojlund wasn't the only United player to show some frustration during the draw, with captain Burno Fernandes involved in a scuffle in the second half. Fernandes, 30, clashed with Everton's Iliman Ndiaye on the half-way line in ugly scenes that saw both players shown yellow cards. 10 Rasmus Hojliund was left furious after being ignored for a pass by Patrick Dorgu Credit: Getty Advertisement 10 The striker angrily kicked out at the post Credit: Sky Sports Premier League With United leading 2-1, the Portuguese playmaker was chasing Ndiaye as the Toffees launched a counter attack when he appeared to kick out at the Senegal international as he skipped away from him. Ndiaye was incensed by the lunging kick, which seemingly had no chance of nicking the ball away, and immediately turned to confront Fernandes. Tempers began to flare from there with the pair trading shoves on the half-way line and attracting the interest of teammates who tried to pull them apart. Fernandes opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a calmly taken penalty after James Tarkowski brought down Amad Diallo in the area. While Ndiaye was the Everton man to level the scores in the 39th minute when he scored off the back of Ugarte's error. Fernandes later set up Mason Mount's 69th minute goal for United, making a clever sideways pass into the box for Mount to spectacularly send curling into the far corner of Jordan Pickford's net.
