Old students honour history teacher in Tiruvannamalai

During his school days, A. Panneerselvam, an eminent diabetologist based in Chennai, never missed his history classes, not so much for its content, but for the teacher, who taught historical events like a play.
This was in 1971 when the diabetologist was a Class VIII student. Over half a century later, around 200 alumni belonging to various batches of the Government Higher Secondary School at Vettavalam village, around five km from Tiruvannamalai town, gathered to show their gratitude to their beloved history teacher and retired headmaster of the school K. Harikrishnan at his 80th birthday celebrations last Sunday.
'He (Mr. Harikrishnan) taught us English and history. His way of teaching was simple and easy to grasp for students, who are mostly from distant villages,' Mr. Pannerselvam, 67, who organised the event, recollects.
The reunion had photo sessions of classmates, a thanksgiving session for teachers, release of books that was authored by the history teacher, and a lot of time spent in talking about days of yore during the four-hour-long event.
But the most interesting part of the event was the experienced shared by the history teacher on the days spent with his students in classrooms decades ago. 'In those days, bonding between students and teachers was much closer because students entirely depended on us for their learning, as parents, who are mostly illiterate, cannot clear their doubts at home. We also treated them as our own children,' says retired headmaster Mr. Harikrishnan.
Being a drama artist, the octogenarian intertwined his artistic skills with history lessons. He displayed historical characters through his movements and gestures that attracted young minds quicker than writing on black boards and mere lectures. 'During English classes, we were asked to write sentences even if they were wrong one. He (Mr. Harikrishnan)then makes corrections. His words were always encouraging one,' says Mr. Panneerselvam.
Along with retired Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran, an alumni, and film director and alumni V. Sekar, Mr. Pannerselvam managed to contact the alumni and bring them together.

'Struggle with English, speak loudly, litter': Texas-based Indian entrepreneur's viral post on Gujaratis ignites heated debate

In a bizarre incident, an Indian founder in the United States has sparked a heated debate online after making comments on Gujaratis. In a statement, Sriram Ayer, an entrepreneur and photographer who is based in Texas, took to his X (formerly called Twitter) and said Gujaratis 'bring shame to India' with their behaviour. Further making major claims, the entrepreneur said, 'In the US and Canada, a vast majority of Gujjus are causing havoc and bringing shame to India.' Ayer went on to call out the behaviour of Gujaratis, which reflects poorly on India, but the same cannot be said for South Indians. His X post instantly grabbed eyeballs and went viral, gathering over 4 lakh views in just a matter of hours. 'Gujaratis struggle with English, engage in problematic public behaviours' In a lengthy post, Ayer went on to mention that many Gujaratis do not attempt integration in the United States and Canada. Rather, they struggle to speak English or speak too loudly. They often engage in problematic public behaviour such as cutting lines, jumping queues, and littering everywhere, said Ayer. Sharing an example, Ayer said, 'I've witnessed their outrageous and entitled behaviour firsthand." 'Unacceptable behaviour' In another example, the Texas-based entrepreneur recalled a Gujarati wedding in Canada which included a noisy celebration late into the night, inconveniencing neighbours and 'creating chaos'. These behaviours, according to Ayer, are 'unacceptable' across the world, including in India. He said it should not be tolerated, especially when it happens abroad; it reflects poorly on all Indians. Viral post sparks debate online, netizens react As soon as the post surfaced on social media, it quickly grabbed the eyeballs and attention of netizens. The post went viral with about 4 lakh views on it. Reacting to the post, one X user wrote, "You cannot expect civilized behaviour from uncouth people. There are such people all over the country, but a greater preponderance amongst Gujjus and Punjabis." You cannot expect civilized behaviour from uncouth people. There are such people all over the country, but a greater preponderance amongst Gujjus and Punjabis. While another said, "I think this whole discussion is highly unwarranted. To link anything to a particular community is not at all right. Some people may create a nuisance, but that does not mean we tag a community as such. Comments should be restrictive in nature." I think this whole discussion is highly unwarranted. To link anything to a particular community, is not at all right. Some people may create nuisance but that does not mean we tag a community as such. Comments should be restrictive in nature. "I don't believe that's true Gujjus are generally humble, warm, and grounded people. They're progressive in their thinking, yet deeply connected to their culture and traditions. You'll rarely find a community that balances business acumen, family values, and cultural pride as effortlessly as they do," another added. You'll rarely find a community that balances business acumen, family values, and cultural pride as… However, one said, "Travelled internationally. Gujjus made the flight resemble a local train. Was so ashamed I had to share the same country name as they do." One asked, "Why are you spreading hate for a community?" Why are you spreading hate for a community? Singapore-flagged ship fire: Coastal surveillance stepped up amid efforts to recover containers that fell into sea

The Coastal police have issued fresh instructions to fishermen, coastal vigilance committees and local fishermen families along the Malabar coast to be alert against the hazardous containers which fell into the sea from Wan Hai 503, the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel that caught fire nearly 88 nautical miles off the Kerala's Beypore coast on June 9. Rescue boats of the Coastal police are carrying out continuous patrol to address the safety concerns and instantly attend to suspicious sightings of any consignments adrift. Along with the Coastal police, the Marine Enforcement squads of the Fisheries department are in action to support the surveillance measures. Fisheries department officials confirmed that the sea patrol is being carried out regularly with the support of a five-member squad. On Thursday, navy personnel airdropped dry chemical powder on the burning cargo ship Wan Hai 503 in a bid to arrest the fire that's been raging for over two days. 📹 Indian Navy — The Hindu (@the_hindu) June 12, 2025 'We have asked the fishermen who venture out to the seas on country boats and boats fitted with on-board engines during this trawling ban period to be cautious. The biggest relief is that all mechanised boats are back to the shores in the wake of the trawling ban,' said a senior Fisheries department official. He said instructions had already been passed to all harbour development committees in the northern Kerala region to support the surveillance measures. According to Indian Coast Guard (ICG) sources, the ship carrying 2,128 metric tons of fuel, hundreds of containers including hazardous cargo, has been posing a significant threat to the marine environment and nearby shipping routes. The fire persisting in the inner decks and areas near the fuel tank continue to be the challenge and efforts are on to douse the fire by Thursday evening, they said. Towing process On Wednesday, an ICG helicopter was able to winch five members of the salvage team and an air crew diver onto the burning vessel to complete the towing process in a challenging situation. It was carried out under difficult circumstances withstanding the adverse weather conditions. An ICG communication on Thursday also said that towing the vessel to a safer location to avert a potential ecological disaster would be the top priority along with the intensified firefighting measures using dry chemical powder, which would be further supported by the Indian Air Force and the salvors appointed by the vessel's owner. Five ICG ships, two Dornier aircrafts and one helicopter are now actively engaged in the operation, it said. It was on June 7 that the vessel loaded with 1,754 containers departed from Colombo to Mumbai. Of the total containers, 143 were reportedly loaded with potentially hazardous chemicals. The preliminary reports had also confirmed that 24 containers fell into the sea within a few hours after the massive fire outbreak. Though rescue teams managed to save the lives of 18 crew, four went missing. ICG sources said search was intensified with the support of more parallel forces for the missing persons
