The ex-Chelsea and Nigeria star admitted he was left "blanking out" on the pitch during the huge clash against Argentina in St Petersburg, Russia in 2018 as he secretly dealt with the horrifying news.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker, the former midfielder opened up about the trauma of both kidnappings, revealing he didn't even tell his manager about the second one.
Mikel, now retired, explained the first incident happened when he was playing for Chelsea under boss Andre Villas-Boas.
He said: 'My dad has his own business now which I helped him set up, and he was driving home from work with his driver.

'A car pulled over in front of them with guns and everything — they got out and took him away.'
"I remember AVB asked me, 'Do you want to play the game or not?.
"I was finally back in the team, I was playing well — so I told him I'd think about it.
"In the end I decided to play but the whole family was crying on the phone."

Mikel said the negotiations felt 'like buying a car,' with back-and-forth demands until they agreed on a fee.
He added: 'I got on the phone with the kidnappers after. It was horrible, my dad was screaming, telling me, 'Whatever they want, just give it to them."

"I wired the money back home, my brother withdrew it and they were told where to drop it off. They said come back in 30 minutes.'
The second kidnapping came when dad Michael was snatched before Nigeria's World Cup match against Argentina.

He said: 'I was in my room getting ready for the game (World Cup). My phone kept ringing and eventually, I picked up.
'My brother said, 'We weren't going to tell you, but we have to, it's happened again. Dad has been kidnapped."
Mikel revealed he was torn on whether to tell anyone, adding: 'I sat there for 30 minutes thinking, 'Should I tell the coach? Should I tell the team?'
"In the end, I decided not to. I went out and played.'

'I nearly threw up on the pitch. I couldn't focus.

"All I kept thinking was, 'How am I going to get my dad out of this again?.
"At some point, I blanked out I wasn't even seeing what was going on.'
Despite everything, Mikel played the full match keeping the situation completely to himself.
Nigeria lost narrowly 2-1, with Lionel Messi on the scoresheet for Argentina.

That result, in Nigeria's final group game, saw the South Americans leapfrog them into second place and into the last-16.
Michael was eventually released but the son Mikel admits the trauma of those moments still haunts him today.

"We knew that a lot of the comments were true, that we have underperformed in some bigger games and lost some games we could have won. "You can guarantee with some of the former players, they're saying 'we'll throw the knife in here' and we'll see the boys coming back. There is nothing more dangerous than a wounded animal. "I think it's a good thing to be honest." Clifford previously admitted that GAA pundit Joe Brolly's claim that Kerry were a one-man team relying on Paudie's brother David struck a nerve. In the aftermath of the final, Paudie said: "To be called a one-man team when I see some of the work that our lads put in, like Joe O'Connor, the turnovers, winning balls, scoring. Jason Foley, Brian Ó Beaglaioch, Gavin White, I'm only naming a few, I see the work that they put in every day. "With the work we put in and the players we have there, for those things to be said, it's not nice to hear it."

Murphy hails team effort as Ireland open Euros with defeat to Dutch
Goalkeeper Lizzy Murphy hailed an 'unbelievable' 60 minutes for Ireland women despite a 2-0 defeat to world No.1 Netherlands in their EuroHockey Championship opener on Saturday. The 25-year-old Loretto stopper was thrust into the spotlight as Ireland's No.1 after Ayeisha McFerran was forced to pull out of the Championships through injury. Ireland had, by a distance, lost their four games against the Dutch since the 2018 World Cup final. But Murphy pulled off a string of glove and boot saves to keep Ireland in the game against a side unbeaten at these Championships since 2015. Murphy said: 'We were such a unit today and it just felt we were so connected on the pitch. Everybody knew what they had to do and we knew going up against the world No.1 it was going to be some defensive battle. 'All 18 girls put bodies on the line and they absolutely killed it out there. To play against the best in the world at a Europeans is a surreal feeling. It's actually hard to put words on it, it was unbelievable.' Ireland staved off a first Dutch penalty corner within the first 90 seconds from Yibbi Jansen, who had scored in 14 of her last 16 matches as the world's best flicker. The Oranje opener did arrive in the ninth minute from a piercing three-way interchange from their own 23m. Murphy had brilliantly blocked the final shot before Joosje Burg touched home the rebound. Ireland, for all their lack of possession and chances, did well to hold out consistent Dutch circle penetration and three first-half penalty corners thanks to Murphy's saves. Ireland's first corner set piece came in the third quarter but Christina Hamill scuffed her shot. Minutes later, Jansen finally found her range and struck low with fizzing power past Murphy's stretched right boot. Ireland twice had chances to claw back the deficit in the second-half, the second saw Katie Mullan's scoop cleared off the line as their best chance. Ireland next play France on Monday in a must-win game to keep alive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the first time. 'We have to go out and perform against France as well,' said Murphy. 'This is not the end, It's only the first game and anything can happen at a European A division. 'I think it's just set up so nicely. Going into the game against the Dutch, it was about taking it quarter by quarter and see what happens. And look, here we are at the end.'
