'BDSM-tinged' Wuthering Heights adaptation slammed for being 'aggressively provocative'

Daily Mirrora day ago
Fans of the gothic classic Wuthering Heights have been left shocked after reading reports of the new film adaptation's test screening, which has been described as 'aggressively provocative'
Any fans of Emily Bronte's iconic dark romance will remember reading about the lonesome Yorkshire moors, the brooding Heathcliff and, of course, the quintessential opening scene in which a man ejaculates while being executed.

Oh, wait – that wasn't actually in the book. But it has reportedly found its way into Emerald Fennel's hotly anticipated movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights. The film, starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, had its first screening in Dallas, Texas, and, as reported by World of the Reel, audience reactions were 'largely mixed' – with some 'visible restlessness' thrown in.

One viewer described the film as 'aggressively provocative and tonally abrasive' and even suggested a link to the 'stylised depravity' seen in Emerald's previous big screen hit, Saltburn, which sparked discourse over its graphic sexual scenes.

The movie reportedly opens with a public hanging in which the 'condemned man ejaculates mid-execution'. This apparently sends the crowd into an orgy-like 'frenzy' while a nun 'fondles the corpse's visible erection' (which does somewhat evoke Saltburn's infamous graveyard scene).
The film goes on to portray a 'BDSM-tinged' encounter, several 'clinical' masturbation scenes and a splurge of "hyper-sexualised" imagery through things like running egg yolks, aggressive dough kneading and a slug close-up. Just as Bronte envisioned.

While the film isn't set to be released in the US until February 2026, news of the test screening has spread like wildfire through BookTok – and Wuthering Heights fans aren't too happy.
One TikToker, who said they didn't 'even feel comfortable reading [the review] out loud', insisted that their criticism of the movie's alleged contents wasn't about 'purity culture'. In her caption, she wrote: 'It seems the Emerald Fennel's Wuthering Heights film adaptation seems a little insecure about being able to portray how disturbing the story is subtly'.

Commenters were largely in agreement, adding that they thought these scenes sounded 'cheap' and were only added for shock value. One commenter wrote: 'Wuthering Heights is not an erotic book at all. Cathy and Heathcliffe's love is minimally sexual at best, she is doing this purely for shock factor…'
'Gothic literature was about transgression through disturbance. Bizarre and cheap attempts to generate shock is not transgression,' a second added.

It even seems to have put others off watching the movie entirely. 'This is my favourite book ever…I will not be watching this movie omg…was already disappointed with the casting but this is so much worse than I imagined,' one wrote.
Others even felt she was simply trying to hold onto the 'Saltburn hype'. One user said: 'I swear she just saw how people reacted to Saltburn and decided to try and recreate the hype.'

I went on a spooky tour of Ireland inspired by Netflix's Wednesday with haunted castles and huge waterfalls

But my two-day mini-break to Wicklow, just 30 minutes south of Dublin, was anything but that. And if I needed any more reason to visit, Ireland is now being billed as the new home of Halloween thanks not just to its long-standing roots to the pagan festival but the hit Netflix series Wednesday. The Addams family spin-off moved its filming location from Romania to Ireland's County Wicklow last year. And viewers can now admire the region in the second series — the first part of which aired, appropriately enough, this Wednesday. With all this in mind, it's fair to say my itinerary was positively gloomy, in a good way. An ancient cemetery and haunted castle were high on the agenda — both of which feature heavily in the new series. Secret tunnel Charleville Castle in County Offaly in the Midland region of Ireland, is the new home of Nevermore School — where Wednesday is shipped off to by her parents. As I wandered the halls and grand rooms of the 1800s Gothic castle, it wasn't hard to see why Wednesday's legendary director, Tim Burton, fell in love with the building's dark charm and character. Despite it being a protected structure, he and Netflix were able to persuade the castle's heritage trust to get a master carpenter to painstakingly remove one of the giant windows at the back. It was replaced with sugar-glass panels in order to film a werewolf smashing through the window and into Nevermore's music room, sparking chaos and fear among the pupils. Martin Lewis warns about strict passport rule that could see you board your flight - only to get sent home on arrival Luckily for me, the werewolf was nowhere to be seen on my visit. Even luckier for the trust, and visitors, Netflix left its giant, nine-orbed chandelier in place hanging dramatically in the entrance hall. Almost like something out of Scooby Doo, the castle's library features a false bookcase which opens up to a secret tunnel. It was originally built to allow the Freemason owners to sneak guests in and out of their meetings undetected. Visitors, meanwhile, have to use the main door located at the foot of a jaw-dropping winding, open staircase which is said to have been the site of a tragic death. Trust member Bridget Vance explained to me how a young girl named Harriet, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Charleville, fell to her death from the fourth floor. 4 Joanna Lumley as Grandmama in Wednesday Credit: OWEN BEHAN/NETFLIX 4 The Sun's Jack Hardwick Credit: Syupplied She is said to haunt the castle walls and can be heard singing from the nursery. Bridget, who has lived in the property since 2013, says her young son once went missing — only for her to find him at the top of the stairs. He supposedly told her he was OK as 'the little girl held my hand'. If I wasn't spooked enough already, I sure would be at Powerscourt Estate an hour's drive away from Charleville Castle. Netflix bosses have used extensive areas of this 47-acre estate to help recreate the magical world of Nevermore. Tucked away in the Wicklow Valley, the Powerscourt waterfall — Ireland's highest at 121 metres — will be instantly recognisable to fans of the show as summer camp Jericho. Away from the Wednesday film locations, the heritage town of Trim in County Meath is also worth a visit — especially at Halloween Powerscourt House itself, with sprawling manicured gardens that would put Buckingham Palace to shame, also features in the hit series. The building and grounds serve as the home of Joanna Lumley's character Hester, who is Wednesday's Grandma. I'm told bosses splashed out on more than 30 assistant directors to try and stop members of the public from filming and leaking scenes after they were unable to close the grounds during filming. To their credit, next to nothing found its way online prior to release. Away from the Wednesday film locations, the heritage town of Trim in County Meath is also worth a visit — especially at Halloween. Trim hosts the four-day Púca festival, which focuses on Ireland's mythological traditions of the spirit world coming to life instead of the commercialised American trick-or-treat version we all know today. Over four days the town transforms into a Halloween mecca with music, comedy, fire displays and a parade celebrating creatures from Celtic mythology called shapeshifters, which come out the shadows to take over the area. Rather than using pumpkins, locals carve out turnips as Jack-O-Lanterns. The turnips are a nod to the Irish folklore tale about a man called Jack who made a deal with the devil, which led to him being rejected from Heaven and Hell. He was destined to wander the countryside for ever, with only a lantern to guide him. While I can't say I've ever had a ghostly experience, in Ireland or otherwise, I leave the country fascinated by tales of yesteryear. But I'm also glad none of them have happened to me . . . yet.

Audiences are left shocked by Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi's 'aggressively provocative' Wuthering Heights movie with 'BDSM sex scene'

Emerald Fennell's upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation has been called 'aggressively provocative' and will feature a BDSM-inspired sex scene. The upcoming adaptation of Emily Bronte's classic novel sees Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi portray doomed lovers Catherine and Heathcliff. But those expecting a faithful adaptation of the beloved work may be in for a rude awakening as Fennell's upcoming film is said to lean into the 'stylised depravity' she has become known for after directing Saltburn. According to World of Reel, Fennell's Wuthering Heights received a mixed reaction at its first test screening in Dallas, Texas this month. The feature opens with a public hanging that sees the condemned man 'ejaculate mid-execution'. Emerald Fennell's upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation has been called 'aggressively provocative' and will feature a BDSM-inspired sex scene His agony sends the crowd into an 'orgiastic frenzy' and a nun reportedly fondles 'the corpse's visible erection'. The film is also said to feature 'intimate, clinical and purposefully discomforting' masturbation scenes and a BDSM-inspired sex scene involving horse reins. The camera is also said to linger on 'suggestive' imagery including 'egg yolks running through fingers' and 'dough being kneaded with quiet aggression'. The publication does note that Margot and Jacob both deliver 'committed performances' and have 'great chemistry'. Fennell has made a name for herself as the director of Promising Young Woman and the black comedy Saltburn which saw a character drinking another's dirty bathwater. Along with her directing and writing career, she has also acted, noteably playing Queen Camilla in The Crown. Wuthering Heights was published by Emily Brontë in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, one year before her death. It follows the story of an orphan, Heathcliff, who is taken in by the Earnshaw family, and he later grows close to their daughter and his foster sister, Cathy. The first known adaptation was from A. V. Bramble in 1920, with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon's 1939 version being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Born in 1818 in West Yorkshire, Emily was the fifth of six children, and spent most of her short life in the moorland village of Haworth, where her Irish father Patrick was curate. But life dealt Emily a series of terrible blows as she lost her mother when she was three, then two older sisters when she was seven. Following her trauma, the novelist retreated into a fantasy world, writing stories and poetry with her siblings. The writer poured her suffering and passion into Wuthering Heights, a wrenching love story as raw as the Yorkshire Moors on which it's set.

Kylie Jenner fans fear she has broken up with Timothee Chalamet after worrying post

Kylie Jenner fans are worried that The Kardashaians star has broken up with Timothee Chamelet after she shared a concerning set of Instagram posts to her followers Kylie Jenner fans are worried that she has broken up with Timothee Chamelet. The Kardashians star, who will turn 28 on Sunday, has first sparked rumours of a romance with Wonka actor Timothee, 29, in 2023 but on Friday, she shared a post on Instagram that some of her 393 million followers have deemed cryptic. ‌ The businesswoman took to the social media platform just before the onset of the weekend and posed for her followers while holding a glass of wine. But it was the background music that she used to accompany the snaps that sparked concern of a breakup as they all had a sad message about the breakdown of a relationship within their lyrics. One song was the Jeff Buckley classic Lover, You Should've Come over. ‌ That one features the lyrics: "Maybe I'm too young / To keep good love from going wrong / But tonight you're on my mind / So you never know,' and 'Broken down and hungry for your love / With no way to feed it / Where are you tonight, child? / You know how much I need it." In the chorus, the Hallelujah legend sings: "Lover, you should've come over / 'Cause it's not too late." It comes after it emerged Whitney Houston spent her tragic final moments 'feasting on food' with gravy boat in bathtub. ‌ READ MORE: Kylie Jenner shares secret to staying 'normal' despite mega fame and A-list boyfriend And another song that she posed on her platform was the 1972 single Crying Laughing Loving Lying by Labby Siffre. That song contains the lyrics: "Crying never did nobody no good no how / That's why I don't cry," in the first verse before continuing with "Loving never did me no good no how, no how / That's why I can't love you now." One fan rushed to X to share a screenshot of the breakup songs and wrote: "I hope Kylie and Timothee are doing good.." after seeing the concerning posts, and another, hopeful that no such split has actually taken place, responded to a photo of their favourite Hollywood couple and said: "They look so good together. I hope they get married." A third wrote: " Kylie Jenner shines bright like the summer sun, and Timothée Chalamet is lucky to have her by his side." ‌ Despite the concern on social media, Kylie is yet to address any such breakup directly. The Mirror has contacted reps for comment. The Kylie Cosmetics mogul first met Bones And All star Timothée when they both showed up to the same Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show in January 2023 for Paris Couture Week. At the time, celebrity gossip page Deuxmoi shared a video of the two laughing together at the show. The duo also attended the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty in 2023 but were not seen together. Three months later, rumours started swirling about the status of their relationship after an insider claimed to Deuxmoi that they had been seeing each other for months. ‌ According to the source, they started dating in January, which is around the same time as her breakup from Travis Scott, with whom she shares two children. On April 16, Kylie's black Range Rover was snapped arriving into the driveway of Timothée's Beverly Hills home. Soon after, insdiers claimed the duo went on a date to Tito's Tacos in Santa Monica a week before. At the time, source told People they were "hanging out and getting to know each other". Another insider claimed it was still early on in their relationship. Speaking to US Weekly, they explained: "Kylie has only hung out with Timothée a couple of times, so things aren't that serious. However, she's enjoying getting to know him better and is open to seeing where things go. ‌ "Timothée is a total gentleman and treats [Kylie] with respect. He's very charming and he makes her laugh, and he's easy to talk to. He's not like any of the other guys she's dated before." The duo do not make too many public appearances together, so fans were thrilled to see them cosying up to one another at a Lakers game in LA at the beginning of May. After spotting the pair at the game, fans flocked to X to share their thoughts. "Kylie is sooooo in love and looks so happy. Love this for her," one wrote. "Kylie and Timmy are so cute. They're always all over one another," another echoed. "Honestly, Kylie is glowing. Timmy must make her so happy," someone else suggested. While another fan added: "Have never seen Kylie look so confident and content. She is so madly in love with that man."
