
‘It's South America, but you don't have to worry about your phone being nicked or sudden gunfire'
After that we go to visit Montevideo's 'famous' theatre, which is unfortunately shut, stride to the historic town walls, but all that's left is a gate, and try to see the remains of the German battleship Graf Spee (famously sunk here in the Second World War's Battle of the River Plate), but they've decided not to let tourists in.
All in all, not a great start. But maybe this is only right. Because overlooked little Uruguay – the lost wallet of Latin America, wedged between the mighty sofa cushions of Argentina and Brazil – is a land of deeply subtle pleasure and quite hidden allure: you have to work at it, but it's worth the effort. Head north-east of the city, and you can find fine wines, great restaurants and bohemian little towns along a truly fabulous coastline.
This subtlety applies to Montevideo itself. Sure, it hasn't got the tropical sass of Rio, or the boulevards of Buenos Aires. But it does have safety. It has leafy, decorous streets of cafés and bars that end in wide beaches, and wherever you sip your cortado or café con leche – try the brilliantly antique Caffe Brasiliano, near the Old Town main square – you don't have to worry about your phone being nicked, or sudden gunfire. And in a continent plagued by crime and mafias that is quite something.
Over a decent steak in Montevideo's Victorian wrought-iron Puerto del Mercado, now turned into an enticing dockland food court full of impressive parillas – Uruguayan barbecues – Arnol explains all this. 'Uruguay doesn't have jungle, we don't have mountains, we don't have earthquakes. We have cows, and safe streets.' As he puts it, Brazilians, Argentinians, Peruvians – they all come here simply because it has very little crime, the way the Victorian English would go to the French Riviera in winter, because it was not cold.
Uruguay also has that wine, and it is one of these winelands, just north of the capital, that is my next stop. The countryside around here is not spectacular in itself. More rolling than majestic. But there's no denying the quality of the booze.
In the elegant, century-old Pizzorno wine lodge – an hour's drive north – I stay in one of their sweet wooden rooms lost in the sunlit vines. The lodge has maybe the world's daintiest swimming pool, meaning you can do 100 lengths in three minutes, but the big thing is the vino, and among the many wines – red, white, dessert – it is the famous tannat that stands out.
As malbec is to Argentina so tannat is to Uruguay. An obscure European grape that has found its spiritual home in the New World, like David Hockney when he reached California. In Uruguay they take the beefy tannat grape and blend it into something special. It goes particularly well with steak. And this matters, so I am told, because when you find a great steak in Uruguay – and you will be offered many – it will be truly great.
Onwards and eastwards I drive, shadowing the coastline. For a while it feels exurban and scruffy, but then somewhere around the last tyre shop, I see the first daredevil surfers, pretty rivers meeting the sea, a horseman riding the beach with a definite hint of gaucho, and then I reach a turning saying 'The Eagle'.
The Eagle? It sounds mysterious because it is. Perched right on the shore, beyond an affluent coastal burb, is a large stone beach-house shaped like an eagle's head. It was built by an Italian-Argentine aristocrat (his vast estate was nearby). Some say it was a love nest, some say it was used for occult rites, some say it was built for Nazi spies (in which case it was entirely useless, as it was only finished as the Second World War ended).
What The Eagle does do, however, is point the traveller to Punta del Este, the languid, sprawling, surprisingly charming, sizzling-in-high-summer resort city, further along the coast – and my base for three nights, at the plush, soothing Awa Boutique Hotel, a five-minute cab ride from downtown (Uber works superbly in Uruguay). Happily, I've arrived in March, by which time the monied Argentinians and Brazilians have gone, but the sun is still shining. Indeed, March could be the perfect time – sunny, warm, empty – to see the magnificent seashore that stretches east of Punta.
Is this the most aesthetically refined coast in the world? It might just be. From Punta onwards the beachfronts are quite heavily developed, yet the development is beautiful. Almost every seafront house is built in the same 'barefoot Bauhaus' style: simple, clean, and flat-roofed, and all made of local stone and dark wood, with huge windows. Around and between these handsome structures are gardens of pampas grass, green cacti and pretty succulents, which fade cleverly into the dunes and then to the crashing sea, where sea lions disport.
I don't know how they've imposed the noble architectural harmony. Is it law? Luck? Whatever the case, it feels like a Cotswold village turned into a modernist coastal strip. What's more, all this artful prettiness culminates at one of the chic-est fishing villages in the world, Jose Ignacio – where Martin Amis lived – which boasts an ace seafood restaurant, Huella. Try the langoustines, with the local albarino.
Beyond Jose Ignacio the coast gets wilder and more poetic. Vultures wheel. Lagoons glisten. Sandpipers patrol the brackish shallows even as whales migrate along the epic sea lanes. As for humans, a kind of mellow bohemian anarchy prevails – endearingly Uruguayan – where surf shacks sit next to legal cannabis shops which lead to over-water lagoon hotels made of driftwood.
Here you will find a sequence of tiny, mildly piratical towns along the lonesome shore all the way to Brazil. Some – like Cabo Polonio – have no roads, running water or electricity. At night kids play guitars by candlelight on the sands, and if you're prepared to rough it (again in a safely bourgeois Uruguayan way) you will be rewarded with skies of a trillion stars, and possibly a psychotropic pizza.
Where to end? Inland. I'm on the hunt for that really good steak, and of all places I find it in a tiny cowboy ghost village which feels like it came from a fever dream by Gabriel García Márquez when he was moonlighting for the Michelin guide. The village is an hour from the coast, it is called Garzon, the restaurant is called Restaurant Garzon. Its chef is a famous Argentine – Francis Mallmann – who uses a lot of fire and wood whether he's doing TV shows in Punta or barbecuing lamb in Patagonia. The interior is cool, wooden, colonial and amiable. Offered the menu, I choose the steak.
It turns out to be possibly the best steak I've ever had. It comes with a glistening layer of fat, a glass of fine tannat, a giant dose of happiness, and it feels like a promise amply fulfilled. So Uruguay ended up exciting, after all.

A traveller visited the Devon town of Ilfracombe that at first glace is a beautiful tourist destination, but beneath the surface is something far more complicated There's so much about the North Devonshire town of Ilfracombe, but not everything is as it seems. On the face of it, the natural beauty it boasts is by far its biggest attraction, and it leaves no wonder why it has become such a popular tourism hotspot. Yet if you look just a little bit deeper, you will uncover something far more controversial. Whether it's the concerns locals share about housing, its dying high street or the overall feeling the historic cultural hub is slowly losing its identity. Ilfracombe has a laundry list of amenities including beautiful beaches and the iconic South West coastal path. Then there's the harbour with a plentiful offering of shops and dining spots. For those with an eye for history, however, there's the Bronze Verity. It is a Damian Hirst sculpture that is well regarded by the town, seen similarly as a landmark after it was first unveiled back in 2012. Devon Live 's Abigail Neep spoke to tourists to best understand the overall feeling about Ilfracombe, with one saying: "It's beautiful and so different to where we live in County Durham. The weather is better, everyone is so nice. "It's very cheap for the tourists and public transport is accessible. Even when it's raining there's things to do inside, like the aquarium." But what became slowly apparent was how different locals perceive their town, seeing beyond the summer buzz and instead offering a far more brutal perspective. Housing, anti-social behaviour and a struggling high street were of note. As described by Abigail: "Ilfracombe was a popular Victorian seaside resort and boasts tall, often five-storey buildings that retains the town's Victorian character, but they're also proving to be a part of the problem." Michelle, owner of View Apartments in North Devon, explained: "A big problem is the Victorian housing, the councils are keen to keep them for that Victorian look, but a lot of buildings are empty and derelict. The five storey houses have no lift and can't house the elderly or infirm, they're just not suitable for families who want two to three bedrooms and a bathroom. "They're also too much to run, when people buy them they haven't got the money to maintain them. They also have single-glazed windows which is bad for the environment because they let all of the heat out, they're not efficient housing." Parking is also a common concern, while affordability issues continue to push residents out. The social scene is problematic with cases of kids causing criminal damage, as well as anti-social behaviour linked with alcohol and drug use. "The high street is sometimes just not safe," warned one resident. And Abigail got first-hand experience of the terror that reigns over the town regularly. She admitted: "No longer than 15 minutes after parking my car, I saw a bust-up in the park near the monument, where three men had a fist fight." Sector Inspector for Ilfracombe, Rich Preston, acknowledged the anti-social behaviour and said they are doing their best to tackle it: "We are aware of a number of reported issues relating to street drinking and anti-social behaviour in Ilfracombe over recent months. The town centre remains our neighbourhood policing priority and we are determined to help ensure that Ilfracombe is both a safe and pleasant place to live or visit." The result of such disorder has left the high street "run down" and "crumbling", while a local shop owner described Ilfracombe as "wasted potential". "Ilfracombe high street is an opportunity wasted, so much is bare, it's shocking. No-body is taking advantage of this place," they said. "Everything is notoriously closed, no-one bringing new ideas, we need a breath of fresh air." Despite its flaws, the Ilfracombe community is strong, and residents of the area say they all band together if anyone is in need. "The people are all so friendly and supportive, and there's a real sense of community," said Darren from St James' Tea Room. Another resident, Linda, who has lived in Ilfracombe for 25 years said: 'Overall I like Ilfracombe, the community is what makes it, it's friendly, kind and caring.' North Devon Council echoed this sentiment: "The community in Ilfracombe is incredibly strong, with many groups and individuals who are active in improving people's lives in the town. It would be wrong to say that the community has been diminished by people who have moved to the area."

Deserted caravan park remains eerily empty during the height of summer
The Baltic Wharf Caravan and Motorhome Club boasts an enviable location at Bristol's harbourside in Bristol, but despite offering 56 pitches, the holiday park lies empty at the peak of the summer season With temperatures soaring over the last week, holiday parks across the West Country are heaving with visitors. From Cornish coastal gems to breathtaking Cotswolds countryside, such destinations provide the perfect opportunity to explore the region's finest spots without emptying tourists' wallets. In Bristol, Baltic Wharf Caravan and Motorhome Club boasts a prime harbourside location, featuring 56 pitches that would typically be fully booked throughout the summer break. The site has been running for nearly five decades but now stands hauntingly deserted, shutting its doors on Monday following a hectic final weekend that aligned with Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. It comes after news that an abandoned UK Butlin's site is now seaside town's 'hell hole' hotel. Bristol City Council owns the land beneath it and now harbours ambitious schemes for this coveted spot, reports Bristol Live. The authority's housing arm, Goram Homes, plans to controversially erect 166 new properties in apartment blocks, providing spectacular vistas across the harbour and towards the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. This comes after multiple lease renewals granted by Goram Homes, and the city council have now run out. The Caravan Club released a statement saying: "Following a number of lease extensions, sadly, the site will permanently close on 11 August 2025. "Thank you to everyone who has stayed with us at Baltic Wharf Club Campsite. Our nearest alternative campsites are Cheddar Club Campsite and Bath Chew Valley Affiliated Club Campsite." Some regulars have suggested that there might be potential for the club to relocate within Bristol, but when asked by Bristol Live, the club chose not to comment. With the site now empty, work on the new residential development is expected to start in the next few weeks. One father, who was one of the last guests at the caravan park, shared his experience on Google this week: "Stayed with my 10-year-old and felt very safe as it's a closed-off site. Walk away from everything in Bristol, it's perfect!". A German tourist left a translated review saying: "Quiet complex in the heart of the city with good access to bike paths and public transport. The sanitary facilities are a bit older but well-maintained. The site is very well secured with a code." Many expressed their disappointment about the redevelopment, including one visitor who wrote: "I'm sure it's a money thing, but what a huge shame. The campsite attracts a very diverse set of folk who come from far and wide. "There isn't anywhere else to stay if you have a camper that is closed by. I expect that the place brings a lot of businesses to the surrounding pubs, restaurants and shops, and I was very excited when I arrived to think I could revisit here time and time again... Until I read the notice board explaining they would be relocated somewhere else." Construction is set to kick off this month on a new development led by Goram Homes' contractor, the Hill Group. The project will include retail or café units at street level and newly landscaped public areas, opening up the location to the community for the first time. Stephen Baker, managing director of Goram Homes, expressed his concern about the housing crisis, stating: "We cannot ignore the housing crisis. As developers, we must find solutions to ensure policy levels of affordable homes are built, even in a challenging market." He added: "With SNG on board, and Homes England grant funding in place, we are now ready to get building a beautifully designed scheme in a prime waterfront Bristol location." Mr Baker also highlighted their commitment to reinvesting profits back into the city, saying: "A significant portion of any profit we make will go back to the council, to be reinvested into the city or the development of more new homes. We have also worked closely with the Harbour Authority to make sure it receives the best value for its land."

Hidden gem UK fishing village with centuries-old tradition and dramatic castle ruins
Craster is synonymous with L. Robson & Sons, a traditional smokehouse that has operated for generations Nestled on Northumberland's rugged coastline, you'll find Craster, a quaint fishing village known for two things - its centuries-old tradition of smoking kippers and its close proximity to one of England's most dramatic castle ruins. Despite its small size, the village's rich history, prime location and unique character have made it one of the county's most iconic coastal destinations. Another UK village filled with history is Cartmel in Cumbria and it also comes with its own pull for food lovers. Craster is home to L. Robson & Sons, a traditional smokehouse that has been in operation for generations. The family-run business uses time-honoured methods to produce oak-smoked kippers that are distributed across the UK and have gained recognition far beyond the North East - with rumours that they've even graced the tables of the British Royal Family. The unmistakable scent from the smokehouse often wafts over the village, blending with the salty sea air, reports the Express. The harbour continues to function as an active working port, with fishing boats nestled safely behind stone breakwaters. Surrounding it are narrow lanes dotted with grey stone cottages, cosy cafes and local art galleries. However, for many visitors, the highlight is the 1.3-mile coastal walk that begins just past the harbour and leads to the awe-inspiring ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. As you follow the shoreline, the path presents open farmland on one side and the vast North Sea on the other, often accompanied by the calls of seabirds overhead. The route is straightforward and suitable for most walkers, although it can be exposed in windy conditions. There's a shorter route from Dunstan Steads, which skirts around a golf course, but starting in Craster gives a stronger sense of connection between the village and the fortress. Dunstanburgh Castle was erected in 1313 by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, one of the wealthiest and most influential men of his time. It was the largest castle in Northumberland at the time, with its massive gatehouse and towers designed not just for defence, but also as a bold political statement, partly aimed at intimidating his cousin and rival, King Edward II. However, Thomas's tenure there was short-lived. After leading an unsuccessful rebellion against the king, he was captured and executed in 1322. The castle then fell into the hands of the Crown and played a significant role in subsequent conflicts, including the Wars of the Roses. By the 1500s, it had started to crumble, with its remote location and exposure to harsh weather speeding up its decay. Over the years, its dramatic coastal setting has drawn artists like J. M. W. Turner, while local folklore has added stories of secret tunnels and ghostly figures. During the Second World War, the headland was once again used for military purposes, with trenches, pillboxes and barbed wire set up in anticipation of an invasion that never happened. Today, the site is under the care of English Heritage. Despite much of the structure being in ruins, its grand scale is still evident. The grassy headland, bordered by safety-fenced cliffs, allows visitors to explore the remains of the gatehouse, ascend Lilburn Tower for northern views towards Bamburgh Castle, or gaze out to sea from the rugged shoreline. The surrounding area is a wildlife hotspot. The nearby Arnold Memorial Nature Reserve is a birdwatcher's paradise, boasting spring colonies of kittiwakes and fulmars, with the occasional sighting of rarer species such as wryneck and red-breasted flycatchers. For those keen on exploring further, the coastal path northwards from the castle leads to Newton-by-the-Sea, a tranquil village featuring a sandy bay and The Ship Inn, renowned for its locally brewed beers. Heading south from Craster takes you towards Howick, passing Cullernose Point - a basalt headland that's a favourite nesting spot for seabirds.
