Revealed: Where Manny Pacquiao, 46, slots into rankings, as controversial comeback against 29-year-old champion gathers pace

Daily Mail13-05-2025

Manny Pacquiao is a step closer to his controversial comeback at the age of 46 after re-entering the welterweight rankings.
The legendary Filipino is set to face a man almost two decades younger than him this summer, WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios, 29.
Pacquiao was last in action in 2021, losing on points against Yordenis Ugas. He looked a shadow of his former self in that performance.
So fans and pundits alike have been perturbed by the former eight-division champion's return to professional action, concerned he will get hurt.
But it seems he is pushing on with the plan and has slotted back into the rankings at No 5 in the 147lbs division.
Pacquiao has competed in exhibition events since his last professional defeat, albeit at a completely different level.

He produced a lacklustre showing against Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo last July and there are fears his body simply cannot hold up at elite level anymore.
But WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman recently confirmed the comeback is on, saying: 'At this time, Mario Barrios is going to fight Manny Pacquiao in July.
'That's a tremendous fight. Manny Pacquiao's first [world] title was at flyweight, with the WBC.
'And [now] he wants to retire as the WBC champion, so he's fighting in the welterweight division.'
The man himself insisted last year than he can still compete with the younger generation despite his age.
'I made history at 40 beating Keith Thurman, and I feel at 45, I have a lot left in the game as I haven't taken a lot of punishment over the last few years,' he told ESPN.
Amir Khan is among those who fear for Pacquiao and he told Mail Sport: 'I mean, it shocked me a little bit.
'I know Barrios really well — he's still young, he still has that fire in his belly, and he will give him big problems. Barrios has been looking really good in his last couple of fights, whereas Manny obviously lost his last fight.
'With Manny, I think he's way past that age where we don't want him to get hurt. He's always one punch away from getting hurt. He's only getting older. I'm sure he's nearly touching 45 or something'.
'When told Pacquiao was actually 46, Khan said: 'Wow. So almost 50. Older than I thought. So even more to the point.'
Khan went on to add: 'I'm sure he wants to become a world champion. And yeah, looking at him and looking at styles — styles make fights — he has a good chance of winning.
'But like I said, he's always one punch away from getting hurt. So doesn't he want to just enjoy himself now? He had a hard career all his life. Why not sit back and relax?'

Hitchins dismantles Kambosos inside eight to retain 140lb title at Garden

Richardson Hitchins delivered a career-best performance on Saturday night at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, stopping George Kambosos Jr with a withering body shot in the eighth round to retain the IBF's version of the light welterweight championship. In his first defense of the 140lb belt, and his first time headlining a card in his hometown, Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs) controlled every round before putting Kambosos down with a sharp left hook to the midsection. The Australian rose to his feet before the count of 10, but referee Michael Griffin waved off the fight as Kambosos visibly grimaced in pain, unable to continue. 'I've been telling the boxing world I was coming and they should have listened,' Hitchins said afterwards. 'I told his dad, if you love your son, you'll stop the fight. He was tough, a true competitor, but I was just the better man tonight.' The 26-year-old Hitchins had pledged a punishing performance after a spicy build-up that included cancelled face-offs, bold predictions and tension between camps. After dancing into the ring to a roaring crowd, the native of Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood dominated from the outset and won every minute of every round up until the stoppage. 'I knew I had to go to some unsafe places to get some good shots off,' Hitchins said. 'I put myself in harm's way, but I knew I had good defense. He caught me with a couple of good shots, but they didn't hurt me. So I just went for the kill.' The Compubox punch statistics lent a quantitative context to the one-way traffic. Hitchins connected with a whopping 205 of 398 punches (52%), while Kambosos landed only 57 of 384 shots (15%). For Kambosos (22-4, 10 KOs), it was a humbling defeat and perhaps the end of a remarkable run. The 32-year-old had been bidding to join Jeff Fenech and Bob Fitzsimmons on the short list of multi-division world champions from Australia. Instead, he suffered his fourth loss in six outings. 'Man, I really believed in myself, but just didn't have the timing,' Kambosos said. 'He was a little bit too good for me tonight. He hit me with a beautiful body shot. I still got up before 10, but the ref's got to do his job.' Having registered shock waves through the sport with his upset win over Teófimo López in 2021 in this same room, Kambosos has since endured punishing losses to Devin Haney (twice), Vasiliy Lomachenko and now Hitchins. Saturday's result not only ended his hopes of a second world title, but may have signaled the final chapter of his career. 'Right now I'm going to go coach my son's footie team,' Kambosos said. Kambosos had shocked the boxing world with his upset win over Teófimo López in this same room in 2021. But since then, the Australian has suffered punishing defeats to Devin Haney (twice), Vasiliy Lomachenko, and now Hitchins. Saturday's result not only ended his hopes of a second world title, but may have signaled the final chapter of his career. Hitchins, meanwhile, continues his promising ascent at 140lb. After outpointing Australia's Liam Paro of the IBF strap in December, he's now scored a second straight win over a world-class foe and will head into a likely title unification fight as a promotional free agent. One possible opponent is Lopez, who took in Saturday's card from ringside before climbing through the ropes to joing the post-fight patter. But Hitchins appeared to make his preference clear when he closed his interview with an expletive-laden rant calling out Haney, the former unified lightweight champion who has since moved up to the 140lb division.

Gutsy George Kambosos battered in one-sided world title bout as Richardson Hitchins KOs Aussie

George Kambosos Jr's distinguished career may be over following a comprehensive world-title loss in New York to classy American Richardson Hitchins. With surgical precision, Hitchins dominated from the get-go before stopping Kambosos two minutes 33 seconds into the eighth round with a second devastating body shot at Madison Square Garden Theatre. Kambosos had been bidding to join the great Jeff Fenech as a multi-division world champion but instead copped a pounding in Sunday's much-anticipated IBF super-lightweight showdown. Having promised to put Kambosos in his place after an explosive build-up spiced with threats, bets and a cancelled face-off after the two combatants almost came to blows, Hitchins delivered on his word. After rap-dancing his way into the ring, the undefeated New Yorker showed Kambosos little respect once inside it and when it became patently obvious he had the Australian's measure. Enjoying a significant height and reach advantage, the so-called "Pride of Brooklyn" kept an aggressive Kambosos at bay in the opening round, then won the second after opening up a cut under the challenger's right eye. Richardson Hitchins STOPS George Kambosos Jr with a VICIOUS body shot!! 😳 #HitchinsKambosos — DAZN Boxing (@DAZNBoxing) June 15, 2025 Hitchins continued to pepper Kambosos with jabs, much like in the Sydney slugger's twin defeats to Devin Haney, to win all seven rounds before gesturing to the former unified lightweight world champion's camp to throw in the towel. They didn't, leaving the referee with no choice but to stop the contest when Kambosos was left reeling in pain following a huge blow to the solar plexus. After stripping fellow Australian Liam Paro of his IBF belt last December in Puerto Rico, Hitchins has now placed Kambosos's career in tatters. The 32-year-old has now lost four of his past six bouts and conceded after his latest defeat that all he wants to do next is coaching his son's football team.
