'Sometimes it's hard to find the positives in situations like these, but without a doubt I'll be back better physically.
'Surgery was a success and the road to recovery begins now. Although it has been a difficult period for me over the last few days, this is only a minor setback and I will be back better than before.'
It remains to be seen how long Mundle, who has been linked with a summer move away from Wearside in recent days with Ligue 1 Monaco and Eredivisie PSV Eindhoven linked with moves for the pacy midfielder, will be out of action.
However, his misfortune will come as blow to head coach Regis Le Bris, whose side was in friendly action against Spanish outfit Sevilla on Saturday evening at the Estadio Algarve in Faro just four weeks before they renew acquaintances with the English top flight when West Ham visit the Stadium of Light.

Tuesday's briefing: Alexander Isak back in Toon as Liverpool parade new signings
Alexander Isak is facing showdown talks with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe after returning to Tyneside. The 25-year-old Sweden international headed back to Tyneside over the weekend after spending time working on his fitness at former club Real Sociedad. Isak missed the Magpies' pre-season tour of Asia having cited a thigh injury amid fevered speculation over his future. Newcastle swiftly rejected a £110million bid for the player from Liverpool last week. 'You have to earn the right to train with us,' said Howe before the team flew home from Seoul. 'No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Established stars Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo scored the goals as Liverpool showcased £270million-worth of new signings in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao at Anfield on Monday. Record recruit Florian Wirtz hit the bar in an eye-catching display while fellow new faces Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike also featured for the Premier League champions. Ekitike set up the opener for Salah, who also missed a penalty, and Gakpo struck twice. It was the second of two games against the Basque outfit, with a largely second-string Reds side earlier winning 4-1. Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott, two players linked with moves, were on target along with teenagers Rio Ngumoha and Ben Doak. Tributes were paid to forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month, in both games. Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has signed a new three-year contract. The 49-year-old Frenchman was appointed in June 2024 and guided the Black Cats back to the Premier League after an eight-year absence in his first season. Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said: 'I'm delighted we are announcing this contract extension for Regis. 'It provides clarity going into the Premier League season, but more importantly it recognises his contribution and continued commitment to the club.' Russell Martin claims his criticism of some of the Rangers squad following their deflating 1-1 draw with Motherwell on Saturday came from a position of 'love and care'. The Gers boss hit out following the William Hill Premiership opener at Fir Park, questioning mentality, speaking about 'egos' and accusing some of 'self-preservation'. 'I think if they know us by now as a group of coaches that it all comes from a place of love and care for them,' said the Gers boss. Brighton owner Tony Bloom has set his sights on winning the SPL with Hearts after investing in the Edinburgh club. The English entrepreneur completed a £9.86million deal in June to secure a 29 per cent stake in the Jambos in non-voting shares. Bloom said: 'If we have not won the league title in the next 10 years, I will be very disappointed.' Rangers are in action again as they host Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of a Champions League third qualifying round tie.

Man Utd slammed for failing to sign Arsenal star after brutal Bruno Fernandes blast
Manchester United's inaction in the transfer market has been criticised as the Red Devils look to sign more players for Ruben Amorim in the remaining weeks of the window Manchester United have been slammed for not making more astute signings this summer in their bid to turnaround their fortunes under Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League last term and are hoping for a much-improved campaign in 2025/26. United have already spent in the region of £130million to land Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, while Diego Leon arrived this summer after a deal was agreed for the full-back earlier in the year. Former Celtic and Arsenal forward Charlie Nicolas has been left aghast that the team have not tried to work smarter in the transfer window and reckons they should have been in the race for Arsenal signing Christian Norgaard. Amorim's captain Bruno Fernandes has called on the club's hierarchy to make more signings as the new season approaches. The Portugal star believes more reinforcements are required. 'We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more and to have more to do to get into the starting line-up," said Fernandes. "I think that's what the club and the manager are trying to do and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.' Nicholas reckons United have missed out on a good opportunity in the form of Norgaard, and have been caught sleeping in regard to Aaron Ramsdale too. "There are a lot of players out there, a whole list who I think would be better than what Manchester United currently have,' Nicolas told Sky Bet. "I just don't know where they see themselves going. If I was Manchester United, why didn't they go in for Christian Norgaard? "It looks as if they've waited for two high-profile players, but I look at them and I think, why are not adding more players like Norgaard, or players who have played well at Bournemouth and Newcastle – you could disrupt things and see who's interested. "There are so many pillars I just can't understand – the whole lack of authority defensively and what is the current situation with the goalkeeper? "Why don't they go and get Aaron Ramsdale? He's qualified, he knows the circuit, he's English, experienced, and competitive. I know Ramsdale hasn't won too much, but it's not far off what United have won. "I just don't see how they see what an upgrade means. I don't see Manchester United fans showing one bit of excitement as it stands right now, and it's getting close for them to get aggressive towards the club again."
