Khamzat Chimaev addresses Dricus Du Plessis 'weird' style, UFC 319 pre-fight trash talk
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Khamzat Chimaev isn't too concerned with how UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis looks while fighting inside the cage. While many have found Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) to have an awkward style, Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) knows how effective it can be. After all, it led him to the peak of the UFC's 185-pound division. Chimaev will get his opportunity to see how different his style first hand when they clash inside the cage in the main event of UFC 319 in Chicago. "Everyone says he has a weird style, very weird – that's MMA, MMA style," Chimaev told reporters at a media day. "I don't think he's some crazy, weird (fighter), but he does his job. He does good and he's a good fighter. I am better." Chimaev has proven to be one of the biggest problems in the division, but he, too, is not without criticism. If a fight makes it out of the first round, where Chimaev has finished five of his eight bouts, questions about his cardio have risen due to his performances in decision wins against Gilbert Burns and Kamaru Usman. It's an issue that Chimaev and team have focused on leading into his first shot at UFC gold by bringing in a new strength and conditioning coach. His head coach, Joakim Karlsson, said Chimaev's cardio is on a different level now. The early aggression from Chimaev could dictate the outcome of the fight. He intends to get Du Plessis to the canvas to find out how he will deal with his grappling game that led to finishes of former champ Robert Whittaker and contenders such as Kevin Holland and Li Jingliang. "When someone laying down on the mats, it's how weird you are on the ground," Chimaev said. "Ground and pound, submissions – they don't care about your style. We will see. We'll be happy to see him in the cage. We will fight him striking, wrestling, grappling. I want to know how he can handle it." Karlsson not only said Chimaev's cardio is vastly improved, but he has also taken training overall more seriously ahead of UFC 319. The fight promotion side of the game has been apparent on social media as well, as Chimaev and Du Plessis have gone back and forth trading barbs online. For Chimaev, it's all business, and if it ruffles the champ's feathers, then so be it. "We're just making money, having fun," Chimaev said. "If he wants to take it personally, it's up to him. For me, it's just work. It makes people happy, it makes me happy. Like I said before, beating somebody makes me happy."

Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star achieved yet another incredible feat on the diamond on Wednesday, notching his 1,000th career hit with a go-ahead home run on the same day he struck out a season-high eight batters. It was just the eighth start of Ohtani's tenure with the Boys in Blue, after missing the 2024 season while recovering from elbow surgery. He hurled four innings, his longest showing of the season as he continues to ramp up towards full availability as a starter, allowing one run on two hits. In the third inning, just moments after he struck out St. Louis Cardinals catcher Ivan Herrera with a nasty breaking pitch, Ohtani slugged a 440-foot two-run homer to deep center, giving the Dodgers what was at the time a 2-1 lead. It was hit No. 1,000 for his MLB career, and career homer No. 264. When combined with his Nippon Professional Baseball statistics in Japan, he now has 1,297 hits and 312 homers. The home run was Ohtani's 39th this season, putting him just three behind the Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh for the MLB lead. Ohtani is now the third Japanese-born player to achieve the feat, joining the likes of Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki — who had 3,088 hits in his MLB career — and Hideki Matsui, who tallied 1,253 hits in 10 seasons. Ultimately, Los Angeles wound up losing Wednesday's contest 5-2 as their bullpen was unable to hold of the Cardinals.

The first lime green dildo was thrown onto the court of a contentious game between the Valkyries and the Atlanta Dream on July 29 in Georgia. Almost the entirety of the internet thought the incident was hilarious and quickly got busy making memes. But then it just kept happening. The bizarre trend continued a few days later at an August 1 game between the Valkyries and the Chicago Sky. The third time this happened, Indian Fever star Sophie Cunningham ended up getting hit in the head with the sex toy after telling people on X (formerly Twitter) to 'stop throwing dildos on the court… you're going to hurt one of us.' Then, someone tried to throw another green dildo at a New York Liberty game, but instead of it landing on the court, it nearly hit a child, according to a video posted on social media. Once a sex toy almost nails a kid in the head, it's time to look at what we're doing. At first, we wondered if this wasn't a funny, tongue-in-cheek way to call out just how sapphic the game has gotten, but now that a man has been arrested and said that it was 'supposed to be a joke' and 'go viral,' the intentions seem more problematic. Being taken seriously as a female athlete is already a tough assignment, and having sex toys flying left and right during games isn't helping, especially at a time when WNBA players are fighting for better compensation and revenue sharing. Bottom line: women's sports are not a joke. And while we'd like to think this started as a harmless prank that gave us all a chuckle, it's starting to smack of sexism. In the beginning even some of the players seemed to laugh along. Fever guard Sydney Colson even went on her podcast dressed a green dildo, but then things kept escalating and other players started pointing out how 'disrespectful' and 'dangerous' it is. 'It's super disrespectful,' Sky center Elizabeth Williams said after he game against the Valkyries, per Front Office Sports. 'I don't really get the point of it. It's really immature. Whoever's doing it just needs to grow up.' Sparks coach Lynne Roberts also said, 'It's ridiculous, it's dumb, it's stupid. It's also dangerous. Player safety is number one, respecting the game, all those things. I think it's really stupid.' And GOAT Diana Taurasi had the perfect response for the jokesters, 'I would have picked that thing up and thrown it right back at them.' Maybe we should all just listen to the players themselves. So whoever is keeping this 'joke' going, whether they are straight or gay, it's time to call it quits. The bit is getting tired anyway, right?
