Adam Idah needs competition to thrive, says Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers
Given Celtic have since lost Jota to a long-term injury and sold Nicolas Kuhn, Maeda has been needed out wide, while Idah has been handed a chance to seize the number-nine role.
'There's no doubt that we need to reinforce the top line,' Rodgers said. 'There's no doubt.
'I'm really pleased with where we are structurally in defensive numbers. We've got a squad from our back line to midfield that can cope domestically and cope in the European competition. So I'm really pleased with that aspect.
'But I think we need competition at the top end of the field.
'For Adam, he's a big, honest boy. He was at his best here when was really challenging with Kyogo for the position and that's something that is important for us to get. But in the meantime, he will work hard and he'll always be that reference for us.'
Asked if Idah needs a goal, Rodgers said: 'Listen, you're a striker at Celtic, you have to be strong mentally, you've got to score goals, of course. But I've a lot of faith in him.
'He really needs that real competition beside him. And I think that's when you then get the most out of him.
'He didn't quite score, but he worked very hard and he's given his all and it will get better as the season goes on.'
Celtic's three goals this season have all come from midfielders, with Luke McCowan's late winner against St Mirren followed by Nygren getting off the mark for the club.
The 24-year-old netted 15 goals for Nordsjaelland in the Danish top flight last season as well as scoring twice in his first four internationals for Sweden.
Rodgers said: 'He's a player that can play as an eight, a 10, he can also play off the side. But his intuition is to get in the box and score goals and that's why we've brought him in.'
Rodgers added: 'Any time you come to Pittdorie, it's always tough games. To come and play with that authority and personality in the game, that was pleasing.'
Aberdeen made a bright start, but Celtic took full control before Nygren's 27th-minute opener.
Dons manager Jimmy Thelin said: 'The way we defended in the first half and how we created the transitions was okay.
'The problem we have right now is the last pass and last decision when we arrive in an attacking position. And we are not arriving there enough to really hurt them.'
Thelin would not comment on reports that Aberdeen are closing in on a deal to sign 21-year-old AC Milan striker Marko Lazetic on a free transfer.
But he added: 'Everybody's working really hard to find the right player and bring him to Aberdeen so let's see what's going to happen.'

With Rangers, they've got to qualify for the Champions League, so I always think there are mitigating circumstances this time of year. "They're playing tough European games midweek then having to play teams who are really motivated at the weekend, I've had problems myself in those sort of spells. "Russell's just in the door. He's still got to put his imprint on the team. "But the bloodlust up here, it's ridiculous. One or two games and people are questioning his tenure. Then on the other side of the city, people are questioning Brendan after a perfect start to the season. You've just got to be laser-focused and try to block out the noise. It's ridiculous!" Speaking earlier on the show, McCoist read out a script to lead into some Premiership chat and he was adamant the writers in the production room were at the wind-up. He read out, "Celtic continued their perfect start to the Scottish Premiership season...' before interrupting: "Hang on they've won two games, man! What's going on? Perfect start? He's trying to wind me up in there!" He continued reading: "Winning 2-0 at Aberdeen, who themselves now sit rock bottom. Russell Martin, meanwhile, made unwanted history at Rangers as they failed to win in their opening two league games for the first time since 1989 - which I was probably responsible for - drawing 1-1 at home with Dundee. Is the title race already over?" After finishing the script, McCoist then said: "Give it a break lads, come on!" That was when Parlour announced that Lennon would be coming on the show as he said: "We'll be asking Neil Lennon if the Scottish title race is already over!" A laughing McCoist replied: "I'm not biting!"

Instead, it was more domestic woe for the Light Blues as they needed a last gasp penalty to rescue a 1-1 draw. The Gers have taken just two points from their first two Premiership matches and already trail rivals Celtic by four points. The fans inside Ibrox on Saturday were vocal in their displeasure, resoundingly booing Martin's substitutions and also jeering at the final whistle. Lennon was also referring to Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers' comments in the aftermath of the Hoops' 2-0 win over Aberdeen. Rodgers took issue with criticism of his style of football, saying: "I heard something the other day about 'we don't play good football and we haven't in the last two years.' "So I think there's a number of people that really don't like me here at Celtic. "But with me and looking at the team, I'm really happy to see how the players are, the current players that we have." Going back to Rangers, McCoist stated his belief that Rangers need to strengthen still at the back and in the striker department. But Lennon reckons things are more deep-rooted and it's the entire CULTURE of the club that Martin needs to change first and foremost. He continued: "They've still got a problem with the culutre in the dressing room. "They played great against Plzen and then find it difficult to raise their game for the bread and butter games. "That was so apparent last year when they had some great victories and then couldn't do it in the bread and butter games, particularly at home. "He needs to address that as quickly as possible and just get more consistency out of results. McCoist agreed, responding: "I think you're right. Lenny, it's a mentality thing. It's a mentality issue. "With Rangers and Celtic you can be playing in the San Siro or whever but equal importance is when you go to Fir Park or Pittodrie, it's a mental thing more than anything." Rangers face Viktoria Plzen again tomorrow night with a 3-0 advantage from the first leg. If they finish the job, they'll advance to the Champions League play-off round with a place on the league stage on the line against either Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge.
