Avondhu flawless in Duhallow demolition as they top first phase of Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges section

Irish Examiner24-06-2025
Cork Premier SHC (Divisional/Colleges): Avondhu 2-31 Duhallow 0-10
Avondhu's supremacy was never in doubt as they topped the first phase of the divisions and colleges section of the Co-op SuperStores Premier SHC with victory over Duhallow at Ballyhooly.
While the prize — a meeting with county champions Imokilly next month — is not an entirely enticing one, the North Cork division were excellent in how they achieved it, taking control early and staying on top throughout.
With Avondhu having beaten Carbery last week while Duhallow lost to Muskerry, there was an unusual knockout element in that there is no third round of fixtures in this league stage and so victory for the north-west side would have sent them through on head-to-head record. Such an eventuality never really looked likely, however.
There were six wides — four for Avondhu — in the opening three minutes and, after Colin O'Brien and Luke Keating had them off the mark, a good point from wing-back Nicholas Linehan was the Duhallow response.
It was as close as the teams would be all night. After Stephen Condon got the first of his ten points, Avondhu knitted together a great move as Liam Óg Hegarty, captain Liam Cronin and Johnnie Murphy linked to give Condon a goal chance. While Ben Newman saved well, Avondhu kept play alive and Paddy Walsh's pass allowed Hegarty to drill a shot to the top corner.

With Eoin Carey and Joseph O'Sullivan superb as a midfield tandem and James Keating dominant at centre-back, the scores began to flow freely for Avondhu after that. Carey's pass allowed Hegarty to get his and his team's second goal on 16 minutes while Luke Keating, O'Brien and Murphy all had points during an unanswered run of 1-11.
Evan Murphy did end a 15-minutes scoreless spell for Duhallow coming up to half-time, but, even so, a 2-17 to 0-4 interval lead was not in any danger of significant erosion.
Duhallow's Barry O'Connor did have the opening score of the second half but Condon, Carey and Paddy Walsh stretched the Avondhu advantage. Not needed to build up scoring difference, they didn't chase too many more goals, though Hegarty was denied a hat-trick as Ben Newman saved well from him.
O'Brien and Condon remained to the fore for Avondhu while subs Jack Twomey and Jamie and Jamie Sheehan also got on the scoresheet as the lead extended to 29 points near the end before a pair of frees by Duhallow's Fionn O'Connor.
A bigger test awaits for Duhallow, but they go in with some measure of momentum.

Defending champ Syd aiming for more Classic glory in Irish Sprint Cup Final

The Cork-based greyhound is favourite to win the €20,000 first prize for his syndicate of owners and preserve an unbeaten record in this year's renewal of the two-bend Classic. Indeed, in nine outings at the Co. Louth venue the Johnny Linehan-trained Broadstrand Syd has suffered just one defeat when he finished second behind 2023 winner Carrick Aldo in last year's third round. He is not the only unbeaten finalist. Droopys Patriot completed a five-timer on Saturday, a sequence that goes back to March when he took Tralee's Juvenile Classic over 525 yards. The August pup is handled by Robbie Gleeson who won the Sprint Cup in 2016 with Ballymac Bigmike. It is far from a two-dog affair. Stonepark Browne was successful in the first and second rounds before running up to Broadstrand Syd the last twice. Southwind Wild boasts a similar profile. He has finished second to Droopys Patriot on each of the last two occasions. Ballymac Brandan came into the event unraced. Nevertheless, the January '24 whelp has accumulated two victories so far. The field is completed by Epic Ace, whose trainer Pat Guilfoyle was responsible for the 2020 hero Grangeview Ten. He caught the eye with the manner he came from behind to win his second round heat. The dog is owned by John Kennedy Jnr who took the Sprint Cup with Good Cody (2021). Track record holder Broadstrand Syd (20.57 first time up in 2024) has a best of 20.70 this year and 'only' clocked 20.91 in each of his last two spins which will give his rivals some hope. Droopys Patriot twice went around in 20.88 and has fared best of the four railers in the draw in that he has avoided trap one and will wear the blue jacket, inside Broadstrand Syd and Stonepark Browne. The latter is a value bet as he made Syd work hard in the semis when starting from one. The other three contenders will be outsiders. If there is to be an upset it could be provided by Epic Ace though he will need to be closer at the first bend. Big race line-up 1 Ballymac Brandan, owner-trainer Liam Dowling, Co. Monaghan handler Laurence Jones has Lockstep and Sling Your Hook in an S2 400. They will be joined by Country Bucks, owned by David Hoey, Knockbridge. Clogherhead's Graham Kelly has Beretta Kadie in an A4 525 and Whiterock Shadow, owned jointly by Tommy McKevitt, Dromiskin, in an A3 525. Togher's Michael Doyle has qualified Coolemount Andy for the A3. Laurence Jones' Rosetta Stone runs in an A2 525 and Farney Charm in an A1 525 where the field includes Graham Kelly's Beretta Brandi.

Cork Premier SHC: Muskerry have too much firepower for UCC

Cork Premier SHC Divisions/Colleges semi-final: Muskerry 4-15 UCC 0-21 Muskerry had too much firepower for UCC in a low-key Co Op Superstores Divisions/Colleges Senior hurling championship semi-final at Riverstown on Sunday. The winners led by the inspirational Aghabullogue talisman Matthew Bradley who finished the evening with a 1-9 tally had too much pace and firepower for the students' defence. UCC have been competitive in the Cork senior hurling championship for many years and won the title in 1963 and 1970. Coincidentally, the last time they won the championship in 1970 they defeated Muskerry 2-12 to 0-15 in a game that was played at the old Athletic Grounds. It was the first time that Muskerry competed in the Cork final and they were denied the elusive double as they won the football equivalent in that year. Over the years the Cork college have had notable players like Joe Deane, James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick, Ray Cummins, Nicky English and Tommy Walsh don the jersey. The also have 43 Fitzgibbon titles at university level but in recent years they have struggled to make an impression in the top tier of Cork hurling. It only took Muskerry 30 seconds to open proceedings courtesy of a classy James Foley point. The students were soon back on parity, but they were stunned into submission in the third minute with a superb Muskerry goal. Colm O'Callaghan gathered the ball 40 yards from goal as he showed incredible pace before unleashing an unstoppable shot to the corner of the net. UCC looked useful going forward and three consecutive points brought the minimum between the teams in the 12th minute. Credit to Muskerry, they responded in style and once again it was O'Callaghan who showed tremendous pace and craft to assist a pinpoint pass to James Lane who placed the ball to the empty net. At times UCC played some free-flowing hurling but they lacked a cutting edge in front of goal. The college half-forward Mark Mahony from the Waterford club An Rinn had a great goal opportunity but he placed his shot to the side netting. In truth Muskerry forwards were moving far quicker as the UCC defence were struggling to restrict them. In the closing minutes Bradley and O'Callaghan continued to cause the students' defence havoc with their movement and it was no surprise the divisional side went in at the break commanding a seven-point lead - 2-10 to 0-9. UCC, helped by some classy play from Fionn Desmond, gave themselves a lift as he drilled over consecutive points and was unlucky not to raise a green flag but his goal attempt was superbly saved by the Muskerry keeper. On the rare occasion UCC threatened a mini-revival, Muskerry responded in style and two more goals from James Foley and Bradley well and truly killed off the tame students' challenge. Scorers for Muskerry: M Bradley 1-9 (0-6f), C O'Callaghan 1-4, J Lane 1-1, J Foley 1-0, S Tarrant 0-1. Cork Premier SHC: Ruthless Imokilly rack up 2-32 against Avondhu

Cork Premier SHC Divisions/Colleges semi-final: Imokilly 2-32 Avondhu 1-17 By the time the first Avondhu attempt had sailed between the posts, Imokilly were already five points to the good at Church Road. By the time the second did, they were seven clear. This was as straightforward as the scoreline suggests. Fifteen shots in the first half returned 13 white flags. Avondhu, with the aid of the breeze, had eight wides and two scores from play to show for their efforts in their Cork PSHC Divisions/Colleges section semi-final on Saturday. In typical candystripe fashion, Denis Ring's men were out of sight before Avondhu had even landed a punch. Another four unanswered scores on the restart left Imokilly 12 up with 25 minutes to play, and still 2-14 to be tacked on. Avondhu did improve, though they couldn't fare much worse. Solely for the unrelenting efforts of Stephen Condon and James Keating. Those two and Brian Lombard got on the scoresheet to leave it 1-23 to 0-10 at the end of the third quarter, while Condon and Keating added two more to leave 14 points between the teams with 15 to play. But Imokilly chipped away. They kept chipping away. Point after point after point. Mike Kelly, Imokilly in action against Sean Killeen, Avondhu. Pic: Jim Coughlan. Mike Kelly – who was on fire in the second half – responded to Condon and Keating's efforts with one of his six scores from play. Avondhu had a couple of half chances at goal. Both from Condon. The first ended prematurely, Condon denied advantage just as he had broken through on goal, with referee Simon Stokes calling it back for the free. He slipped through again 10 minutes later, this time denied smartly by Ciarán O'Brien, who blocked his effort. Avondhu did eventually get that breakthrough, after 61 minutes. A clever one-two between Condon and Keating saw the latter rifle a beauty into the top corner. But that consolation was mercilessly wiped out, as Joe Stack set up substitute Oisín Fitzgerald for a second Imokilly major in the 64th minute. Kelly and Jack Leahy had been scoring for fun up until additional time – leaving Imokilly 1-31 to 0-16 clear before Keating hit the net. It was a woeful opening period for the north Cork side. They couldn't hold onto any of their restarts, and when they did, any attempts at picking out a forward up front were fruitless. Their distribution was subpar, and they scrapped the use of Liam Cronin as a sweeper after 19 minutes. A substitution followed four minutes after. By that stage Imokilly were 0-12 to 0-4 in front. They were eight ahead still at the break. When the first green flag came for the east Cork outfit, it was after 42 minutes, and was a gift from Avondhu. Cronin had done well to win possession and he handpassed it short to goalkeeper Daniel O'Connell, but his stick pass was straight to Diarmuid Healy, who unleashed a low strike into the gaping net. At that stage it was 1-21 to 0-9. All too easy for the reigning county champions. Scorers for Imokilly: J Leahy 0-9 (0-4 f), M Kelly 0-7 (0-1 65), D Healy 1-1, O Fitzgerald 1-0, B Lawton 0-3, S Hegarty, J Stack, W Leahy, C O'Callaghan, J Cronin 0-2 each, C Cahill, C Joyce 0-1 each. Scorers for Avondhu: S Condon 0-8 (0-3 f), C O'Brien 0-5 (0-3 f), J Keating 1-2, B Lombard, E Carey 0-1 each.
