Charleville have too much class for Newtown in derby renewal

Cork Premier SHC: Charleville 1-21 Newtownshandrum 0-15 Charleville never trailed at any stage as victory in Sunday's north Cork derby with Newtownshandrum earned them a Co-op SuperStores Premier SHC knockout spot with a game to spare. On a perfectly manicured Milford pitch, Charleville finished well in the first half to give themselves a nice half-time cushion; then, while Newtown did come back to within four on a few occasions in the second period, the winners buttressed their tally near the end. They will definitely be advancing from the group – though the final-round fixture against Midleton will determine whether they finish first or second – while Newtown are out. This derby clash, the first championship meetings between the clubs' standard-bearers since 1992, was well-attended and superbly administered by the host club, with the pitch of bowling-green standard, but the game never reached the levels of the anticipated occasion. Charleville never trailed at any stage and could have forged an earlier lead but some over-elaboration was costly; however, they were well-served by superb effort out the field, with Jack Meade, Finbarr Cagney and Jack Buckley superb in defence while Jack Callaghan was a ball of energy at midfield, latching on to every break. While Newtown did keep early pace, with a long-range point from their stand-out, Tim O'Mahony, and a Jamie Coughlan free tying at 0-4 each, it was the last time that parity existed. Charleville pushed again through Seán Bresnan before Darragh Fitzgibbon was found from a quick puckout after a Newtown wide and pointed – the second time that happened – before Cagney and the excellent Zach Biggane combined for Gavin Kelleher to make it 0-7 to 0-4. The lead was 0-8 to 0-6 after 24 minutes when it looked like early Newtown sub Stephen Minihane had the cut the lead to one – however, nobody had departed and so the score was cancelled and Charleville made the most of their let-off. Paul O'Sullivan, Newtownshandrum, under pressure from David Forde and Danny O'Flynn of Charleville in the SHC. Picture: Brendan Gleeson The goal came when Cathal O'Carroll's lung-busting run created a goal chance for Danny O'Flynn; while his shot was repelled by James Bowles, O'Flynn was on the break to feed Kelleher, who crashed a shot home. A super Biggane effort was followed by a David Forde point that originated with a Meade turnover and then Biggane was the provider for Bresnan's second. Coughlan did point a couple of early Newtown frees on the restart but, while Charleville didn't have the same attacking fluency as the first half – and began to rack up wind-assisted wides – they answered those through Biggane and Callaghan and their defending ensured that no easy chances were coughed up. Approaching the three-quarter mark, Newtown looked to have found momentum as sub Turlough O'Neill, O'Mahony with a long-range free and then a lovely Coughlan point. Despite the more wayward shooting, Charleville didn't panic and Fitzgibbon scored his fifth with a fine effort before sub Conor Buckley marked his arrival by winning a break and firing over. That left it 1-16 to 0-13; a cheap puckout turnover did lead to Conor Griffin pointing for Newtown and then Coughlan brought the margin back to four, but Charleville gunned for the line. Great work from Conor Buckley and Cathal O'Carroll led to sub Jack Doyle being fouled and Fitzgibbon pointed before Conor Buckley benefited from an O'Carroll turnover. Another from Buckley made it 1-19 to 0-15 and the clock was in the red before Newtown had anything like a goal chance, Conor Reynolds saving from O'Neill. Another replacement, Tim Hawe, extended the lead and the final play summed up Charleville's industry – Callaghan forced one last turnover and Fitzgibbon fed sub Robert O'Carroll for a huge point from his own 65, nine points in it and the end. Avondhu flawless in Duhallow demolition as they top first phase of Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges section

Cork Premier SHC (Divisional/Colleges): Avondhu 2-31 Duhallow 0-10 Avondhu's supremacy was never in doubt as they topped the first phase of the divisions and colleges section of the Co-op SuperStores Premier SHC with victory over Duhallow at Ballyhooly. While the prize — a meeting with county champions Imokilly next month — is not an entirely enticing one, the North Cork division were excellent in how they achieved it, taking control early and staying on top throughout. With Avondhu having beaten Carbery last week while Duhallow lost to Muskerry, there was an unusual knockout element in that there is no third round of fixtures in this league stage and so victory for the north-west side would have sent them through on head-to-head record. Such an eventuality never really looked likely, however. There were six wides — four for Avondhu — in the opening three minutes and, after Colin O'Brien and Luke Keating had them off the mark, a good point from wing-back Nicholas Linehan was the Duhallow response. It was as close as the teams would be all night. After Stephen Condon got the first of his ten points, Avondhu knitted together a great move as Liam Óg Hegarty, captain Liam Cronin and Johnnie Murphy linked to give Condon a goal chance. While Ben Newman saved well, Avondhu kept play alive and Paddy Walsh's pass allowed Hegarty to drill a shot to the top corner. Paddy Walsh in action for Avondhu. Picture: Larry Cummins With Eoin Carey and Joseph O'Sullivan superb as a midfield tandem and James Keating dominant at centre-back, the scores began to flow freely for Avondhu after that. Carey's pass allowed Hegarty to get his and his team's second goal on 16 minutes while Luke Keating, O'Brien and Murphy all had points during an unanswered run of 1-11. Evan Murphy did end a 15-minutes scoreless spell for Duhallow coming up to half-time, but, even so, a 2-17 to 0-4 interval lead was not in any danger of significant erosion. Duhallow's Barry O'Connor did have the opening score of the second half but Condon, Carey and Paddy Walsh stretched the Avondhu advantage. Not needed to build up scoring difference, they didn't chase too many more goals, though Hegarty was denied a hat-trick as Ben Newman saved well from him. O'Brien and Condon remained to the fore for Avondhu while subs Jack Twomey and Jamie and Jamie Sheehan also got on the scoresheet as the lead extended to 29 points near the end before a pair of frees by Duhallow's Fionn O'Connor. A bigger test awaits for Duhallow, but they go in with some measure of momentum. Scorers for Avondhu: S Condon 0-10 (0-2 f), L Óg Hegarty 2-2, C O'Brien 0-6 (0-1 f), E Carey 0-5, J Murphy, L Keating 0-2 each, J O'Sullivan, P Walsh, J Twomey, J Sheehan 0-1 each.
