Mayor Cherelle Parker, other Philadelphia leaders attend vigil for victims of mass shooting at Fairmount Park

CBS News04-06-2025
A vigil for the victims of the Memorial Day mass shooting in Philadelphia's Fairmount Park was held on Tuesday night. One week later, and there are still no answers for the shooting that left two dead and nine others injured.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, along with other city and faith leaders, gathered in a circle with the family of 23-year-old Amya Devlin, who was killed in the shooting along with 21-year-old Mikhail Bowers.
The gathering Tuesday night was part of a community prayer vigil on Lemon Hill in response to the violence.
It was aimed at honoring the victims and supporting their families. The goal was to provide a space for collective mourning, reflection and healing with an overall goal of stopping gun violence.
"We also have to acknowledge that the behavior that was exhibited here is not normal, and we won't normalize that kind of activity here in our city," Parker said.
The crowd was filled with concerned community members, anti-gun violence advocates and organizations that work with the youth.
Many shared a similar pain of losing a loved one.
"Unfortunately, far too many of us really do understand your pain," state Sen. Sharif Street said. "We should be able to congregate in these spaces and not have people die on holidays."
While fighting gun violence has been a constant battle, city leaders vowed to continue to work to make sure residents feel safe in their own city.
"lt will continue to take all of us and all efforts, on all fronts, to make Philadelphia neighborhoods safer; no matter what space and place we decide to gather, it should be safe," Parker said.

Baltimore City residents invited to weigh in on $7 billion downtown revitalization plan

City residents will have a chance Wednesday evening to shape the future of downtown Baltimore as officials move forward with a 10-year revitalization plan. Mayor Brandon Scott will host a public meeting at 5 p.m. at the Downtown Partnership office on South Charles Street to gather community input on "Downtown RISE," a strategic initiative designed to make the city's core cleaner, safer, and more attractive to residents and visitors. The meeting will run until 7:30 p.m. and will include updates on completed projects and time for public suggestions. The mayor introduced a draft of the Downtown RISE plan earlier this year. First launched in November 2023, the initiative is now entering its third and final planning phase. The Downtown RISE strategy aims to stimulate economic development, improve infrastructure, bolster Baltimore's arts and entertainment scene, and strengthen public safety and sanitation. Already, several changes have taken place downtown. Artscape was relocated to the area in May to showcase public art and culture. Ten digital billboards have been installed to promote local events, and the city has stepped up graffiti removal, street sweeping, and trash management. To boost safety, Baltimore has invested in technology and equipment for a Downtown Security Operations Center. New surveillance devices have been installed near Lexington Market to address nuisance activity. Public restrooms and additional safety infrastructure are also part of the plan. The plan aims to improve access to high-quality retail, grocery stores, and health care facilities. According to city data, more than 25% of Baltimore businesses and 33.5% of jobs are based downtown. However, officials say a "mobility crisis" has limited many residents' access to this economic hub. A $6 million modernization of the city's permitting system is underway to streamline the process of opening or operating businesses downtown. The plan also includes reforms to liquor licensing, with a focus on helping small establishments. New legislation, signed into law in May 2024, allowed small restaurants and cafés to obtain liquor licenses if they maintain a bona fide kitchen and partner with the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore. The city said this would reduce past barriers such as high seating and capital investment requirements. In addition to Wednesday's meeting, two more public sessions with the city's Planning Commission are scheduled — one next Thursday and another in early October. The full Downtown RISE Strategic Plan is available online.

Musk Backs Off ‘America Party' Plans, Report Says

Elon Musk is reversing course on his plans to form a third political party and is telling associates to instead focus on his companies, according to a new report citing sources who said Musk is considering financially backing Vice President JD Vance if he decides to run for president in 2028. (Photo by ROBERTO SCHMIDT/AFP via Getty Images) AFP via Getty Images Musk has expressed concerns about angering Republicans if he followed through with his plans for a new 'America Party,' the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of his plans who said Musk hasn't ruled out the possibility of forming a third party. Musk announced last month—at the height of his feud with President Donald Trump—he informally launched the party, which he has said he would use to target Senate and House races, though he hasn't registered the America Party with the Federal Election Commission. Despite cutting ties with Trump, the Tesla CEO has reportedly stayed close to Vance and has floated the possibility of contributing to his 2028 presidential campaign, if he decides to run. Musk forged a close relationship with Trump after contributing to his 2024 presidential campaign then went on to work in the White House, heading up the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk left his government role in May and a feud with Trump quickly ensued when Musk blasted Trump's signature policy bill for being too expensive and adding to government debt. Trump subsequently threatened to revoke Musk's government contracts, though their public spat appears to have cooled after Trump said in late July on Truth Social he wants Musk's companies to 'THRIVE LIKE NEVER BEFORE' and denied he was considering revoking Musk's government subsidies.
