Shark! Infested Celebrity Waters: Meet Helen George

Graziadaily14-07-2025
You may know her best from hit show Call The Midwife, but now Helen George is swapping the streets of Poplar for a very different destination.
Jetting off to the Bahamas, the actor is taking part in ITV's brand new Shark! Infested Celebrity Waters - and it'll be far from an easy ride. Bimini, the island where the show is filmed, is home to around seven to 10 different types of sharks - including bull sharks, great hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks, and Caribbean reef sharks. Rather them than us...
Here's everything to know about Helen George - including who she's dating, her health battle, and the deep-rooted fear that inspired her to get up close and personal with some real life sharks.
Helen is a British actor best known for starring in shows including Call The Midwife, as well as her stage career in musicals such as The King and I. The Birmingham-born star studied at the Royal Academy of music, and was previously a backing singer for Elton John!
Born on 19th June 1984, she's currently 41 years old (and an enthusiastic, quick-witted Gemini)...
Since the debut of BBC's Call The Midwife in 2012, Helen has won over fans with her portrayal of Trixie Aylward (formerly Trixie Franklin.) Over the years, viewers have followed Trixie through her struggles with alcohol addition, before recently marrying Matthew Aylward (played by Olly Rix) and stepping into the role of stepmum.

Helen was previously married to actor Oliver Boot, with the couple together from 2012 to 2015. Their split came just weeks before the Call The Midwife star appeared on 2015's Strictly. Partnered up with professional dancer Aljaž Škorjanec, Helen finished sixth in the 13th series of the dancing show.
Helen first met her co-star Jack on the set of Call The Midwife in 2015, with Jack playing the role of Reverend Tom Hereward. While Trixie and Tom certainly had an up-and-down onscreen romance, it was said Helen and Jack fell head over heels in love with each other while filming the 2016 Christmas Special in 2016.
The couple welcomed daughter Wren in 2017, before the birth of their seconds daughter, Lark, in 2021.
However, Helen and Jack revealed that they were calling it quits on their seven year relationship in 2023. A shared statement read, 'Some months ago, we separated. Our beautiful girls remain the focus, and [we] respectfully ask for privacy for this next chapter.'

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Helen had found love with divorced dad of two Dan Innes. The businessman is 11 years her senior, with the couple reportedly meeting on celebrity dating app Raya. It's thought the pair are still together.
Opening up Dan's reaction to her stepping into shark-infested waters, Helen shared, 'I hadn't even told Dan how scared of the water I was, and he was like, "But you got in the sea on holiday in Cornwall with me? I didn't know you were so scared."
Sharing water with some sharks is enough to strike fear in anyone. But for Helen, there's another reason why the ITV show is a big step out of her comfort zone.
The star suffers from aquaphobia - an intense and irrational fear of water that was triggered following a traumatic experience at a swimming party when she was a child.
Opening up about her phobia, Helen shared, 'I was terrified of putting my head underwater. I have a real deep-rooted fear. I used to love the water when I was really young, but I went to a swimming party when I was six. They put those weird Nineties foam mats down. They're massive yoga mats, really.
'I just remember this moment of being stuck underneath one and not being able to get out. There was that fear of being trapped.'
Revealing that it was this fear that encouraged her to sign up for the show, Helen explained, 'My kids know that I am scared of the water, and my seven-year-old is more confident in the water than I am, and I realised I've got to do something about that as it's not safe.'
During both her pregnancies, Helen faced health battled. The star suffered from intrahepatic cholestasis (ICP), a condition that causes severe itching and led to the premature birth of both her babies.
Sharing her ordeal on Instagram during her second pregnancy, Helen later recalled, 'I tried everything - creams, baths, all of it - and nothing would work. I would scratch all day and all night, normally on my hands, shoulders, feet - but that quickly increased to bloody everywhere.'
Revealing that she was put onto medication at around 30 weeks, Helen said, 'I have to say this pregnancy was so uncomfortable and painful. I thought the second would be easier, but it really wasn't. Spreading the world about this sometimes fatal condition is really important to me.'
And spread the word Helen did! The condition was later featured on an episode of Call The Midwife.
Joining Helen for a dip in the sea is comedian Sir Lenny Henry, Amandaland's Lucy Punch, Countdown's Rachel Riley, TV presenter Ade Adeptian, McFly's Dougie Poynter, and stand up comedian Ross Noble.
Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters will air on ITV1 and ITVX from Monday 14th July at 9pm. The show will air at the same time every Monday for the next five weeks, also available to stream. Happy watching!

Love Island receive over 1,000 complaints following 'bullying' scenes

Ofcom has revealed that Love Island received over 1000 complaints by viewers about the ITV2 show last week, with many outraged by Islander Harrison's 'misogynistic' behaviour Ofcom has revealed that Love Island received over 1,000 complaints last week, with viewers accusing Harrison and other contestants of displaying "misogynistic" behaviour. A total of 1,071 complaints were made across four episodes last week, with Friday's episode drawing in the highest number - 527 complaints. ‌ Ofcom told The Mirror that 280 of the complaints were related to "misogynistic behaviour, most notably by Harrison, Harry and Dejon," while 247 focused on "bully behaviour and mental wellbeing of contestants, most notably linked to Shakira being bullied" during the 18 July episode. ‌ Meanwhile, fans had already threatened to contact Ofcom last week over Shakira's treatment by Harry, Harrison, and Dejon, particularly after Harrison referred to Shakira and Conor as a "one-sided couple." ‌ As for the other episodes which received complaints, Sunday 20 July had 222 viewers complain over "alleged misogynistic behaviour by Dejon." Meanwhile, on Tuesday, 15 July, a total of 221 viewers lodged complaints, with the majority expressing concern over the "alleged misogynistic behaviour by Harrison." ‌ However, 44 were related to "how Lauren was portrayed in the edit of the episode" and 34 were about the "alleged bullying behaviour towards Shakira and Toni." For the episode on 17 July, 69 viewers complained about Harrison's "alleged misogynistic behaviour", while 27 complained about "alleged bullying behaviour and expressed concern for the mental wellbeing of Shakira." ‌ Ofcom has not yet confirmed whether it will launch an investigation into ITV in response to the complaints. ITV has several duty of care protocols in place, including providing Islanders with training before entering the villa that covers language, behaviour and the importance of mutual respect in relationships. It had been a pretty dramatic week inside the Love Island villa, with Lauren - who was previously coupled up with Harrison - being dumped from the villa after she was left single. Just a day later, viewers watched as Harrison chose to leave the villa and follow Lauren, with the controversial contestant revealing he still had feelings for him. ‌ During last Tuesday's episode, which received over 200 Ofcom complaints, viewers were left shocked after ITV aired a saucey bedroom exchange between Harrison and Lauren. Harrison could be seen reaching over to Helena and Harry's bed in the night and asking: "Do you have a condom?" Helena quickly grabbed one from a drawer, and Harry handed it over before the couple slipped under the covers. However, fans were unimpressed by the moment, especially since Harrison had recently admitted he still had feelings for his ex, Toni. Taking to X, one viewer wrote: "Did Harry just pass a condom to Lauren and Harrison???! I didn't know I was watching too hot to handle," while a second shocked fan said: "I have never. In all my years seen someone ask for a condom on #loveisland. Like yayyyyy for sexual safety but that is tooooooooooo much."

Fleming is believed to have written part of Moonraker at the property between 1951 and 1957, taking inspiration from the surrounding cliffs and coastline for the novel's dramatic setting. Its villain, Hugo Drax, constructs his deadly Moonraker rocket just outside Dover, near Deal. Coward had owned the house previously and renamed it 'White Cliffs' after restoring it following wartime damage by British and Canadian troops preparing for D-Day. He spent around £2,000 reinforcing the chalk cliffs and reportedly found his love of painting during his years there, according to Dover Museum. The house passed to Fleming in 1951, becoming his weekend and holiday escape. It remained in private hands until 2008, when current owner Mark Sawyer spotted it during a visit to Kent with his then-partner. The 56-year-old, who works in private equity, first glimpsed the village while swimming the Channel in a team relay: 'I distinctly remember the captain of the boat saying, 'There's St Margarets, it's a really pretty village'. I saw it from the water for the first time.' Although the house wasn't officially on the market, the couple fell in love with it and persuaded the estate agent to take it off the books immediately with a £20,000 deposit. They bought it for £800,000 and have since spent around £1million on renovations, including buying land to extend the garden. His partner Lara Jewitt, a Chelsea Flower Show gold medallist, helped design the garden, which echoes the style of Derek Jarman's Prospect Cottage. The couple bought land from the council in 2014 to create it, but soon ran out of space. 'We developed every square inch down there, and we just wanted a bit more room,' Sawyer said. 'I never thought I would sell it, to be honest with you. It has three bedrooms, and that is too small to have both of my children back, potentially in the future with their partners, and my family to stay.' Not everyone is pleased about the decision. 'My daughter is still not talking to me since I told her I am selling it,' he admitted. 'She'll get over it eventually.' Strutt & Parker, who are handling the sale, describe Mermaid Cottage as a 'breathtaking location' with a 'rich history of famous connections.' 7 They bought it for £800,000 and have since spent around £1million on renovations, including buying land to extend the garden Credit: Strutt & Parker

Did Ozzy Osbourne bite the head off a bat? Truth behind icon's wildest on stage moment

Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne had plenty of wild on stage moments throughout his career, yet one incident stands out above the rest as he once feared it would be mentioned on his grave Ozzy Osbourne's Prince of Darkness nickname was certainly not just because of his jet black looks on stage and all boiled down to once incident. The Black Sabbath icon pushed the limits during his performances, and even in the world of rock he managed to turn heads. ‌ He did not get his onstage name by accident, and long reigned over the rock world until his final show earlier this month. Ozzy received a royal music send off at Birmingham's Villa Park, where he performed with his band for one last time. ‌ Just over two weeks later, Ozzy's death at the age of 76 was announced by his beloved family. A statement shared on Tuesday said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. ‌ "He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family's privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis." Of all moments in Ozzy's career, one antic stands out above the rest in how he is being remembered. On January 20, 1982, Ozzy famously bit the head off a bat while on stage, becoming one of the most notorious moments in rock history. ‌ Decades later, some recollections of the wild incident have varied, while others have stood the test of time as fact. Ozzy was two months into his tour to promote his second solo album, Diary of a Madman. While on the road, Ozzy started a tradition where he would catapult pieces of raw meat and animal parts into the audience. Word quickly spread through his fans and they started coming to the shows armed and ready to retaliate. During his show at Des Moines' Veterans Memorial Auditorium, something small and black was lobbed on stage with Ozzy thinking it was a rubber toy. In his 2010 autobiography, Ozzy declared he picked it up, stuffed it in his mouth and chomped down. ‌ "Immediately, though, something felt wrong. Very wrong. For a start, my mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid," he recalled in I Am Ozzy. "Then the head in my mouth twitched." "Somebody threw a bat. I just thought it was a rubber bat. And I picked it up and put it in my mouth. I bit into it," he said. Yet, he soon realised what was happening and quipped: "Oh no, it's real. It was a real live bat." ‌ However, Ozzy's account has varied over the years as he once said the bat was already dead. Speaking to the BBC in 2006, he recalled: "This bat comes on. I thought it was one of them Hallowe'en joke bats 'cos it had some string around its neck," he said. "I bite into it, and I look to my left and Sharon [Osbourne, his wife and then manager] was going [gesturing no]. And I'm like, what you talking about? She [says], 'it's a dead real bat'. And I'm... I know now!" In an effort to settle the tale once and for all, the man who claimed to have taken the bat to the concert said it was in fact dead. Mark Neal was 17-years-old at the time and told the Des Moines Register, that his younger brother had brought the bat home a fortnight before. Sadly, it hadn't survived and by the time Mark took it to the concert, it had been dead for days.
