Gus Atkinson makes impact on England return but rain blights opening day

Atkinson injured his hamstring against Zimbabwe in May and has since been restricted to a one-off club appearance for Spencer CC and an outing for Surrey's 2nd XI, but he was England's liveliest performer as India reached 85 for three on day one at the Kia Oval.
He took the new ball in a revamped attack missing the injured Ben Stokes and rested duo Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, promptly dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw in a threatening opening spell.

The ever-present Chris Woakes added the wicket of KL Rahul when the opener slashed an inside edge into his own stumps but wayward spells from the returning Josh Tongue and Jamie Overton undermined English efforts in inviting conditions.
With heavy cloud cover, floodlights in action early on and good carry from a green-tinged pitch, the pair's failure to hit a consistent line or length allowed the tourists to wriggle off the hook as they reached 72 for two at lunch.
The interval came eight minutes early due to showers and the elements continued to win out, with the players finally re-emerging at 3pm only to be forced off again after just under half-an-hour.

But that slim window was all Atkinson needed to make his presence felt again. He was bowling to India's emphatically in-form skipper Shubman Gill when a ridiculous attempt to steal a single came out of the blue.
Sai Sudharsan (28no) refused to be the sacrificial lamb, sending Gill back and inviting Atkinson to pick and throw at the stumps. As Gill turned, the England quick was more than up to the challenge, running him out by a comfortable distance with a clinical piece of ground fielding.
For Gill it was a horrible self-inflicted wound, leaving him on 743 runs for the series – 31 short of Sunil Gavaskar's Indian record with one more innings to play.

Another weather interruption followed, with England now narrowly in front of the game despite an occasionally wasteful effort with the ball.
Ollie Pope, standing in for Stokes, kept up the home side's 100 per cent record at the toss and made the simple decision to bowl first in helpful conditions.
But while Atkinson proved reliable on his return, taking one for 13 in nine disciplined overs, Tongue and Overton disappointed.
Both were guilty of losing their radar, Tongue conceding 11 in wides as two stray deliveries slid to the fine leg boundary and Overton unable to build pressure with some inconsistent lines.

Swansea City closing in on sensational move for highly-rated Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder The midfielder looks set to become Swansea's latest signing of the summer Malick Yalcouye was on loan at SK Sturm Graz last season and now looks set to join Swansea City (Image: Getty Images) Swansea City are on the brink of completing a loan move for Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Malick Yalcouye. ‌ WalesOnline understands an agreement has been reached to take the 19-year-old on loan for the upcoming season, with the player set to undergo a medical set to take place on Wednesday. ‌ The Ivorian is in attendance to watch his new side take on League Two side Crawley Town on Tuesday night, with the club hoping to have his international clearance through before Saturday's clash at home to Sheffield United. ‌ Yalcouye, who can play either out wide or as a number eight, is seen as one of the most exciting youngsters on Brighton's books right now, and there had previously been suggestions he might in the first team picture this season. But despite some impressive performances for Albion in pre-season, another loan spell has been viewed as the best next step in his development. Sign up to our Swansea City newsletter here. Toulouse and FC Copenhagen had previously been credited with an interest in recent weeks, but Swansea appear to have won the race for his signature. Article continues below The midfielder spent last season on loan at Austrian champions Sturm Graz, and even played eight times in their Champions League campaign, a run that also saw him named Player of the Match against Borussia Dortmund. He signed a five-year deal with the Seagulls last summer, and there's a growing feeling on the English south coast that he has the skillset to one day shine in the Premier League following a meteoric rise. Eligible to represent Ivory Coast and Mali, he signed for Albion after making just 14 outings for previous club IFK Goteburg having previously come through the ranks of Ivorian side ASEC Mimosas, where the likes of Emmanuel Eboue, Gervinho and the Toure brothers all began their careers. ‌ His time in Sweden even saw him compared to Ngolo Kante by some onlookers. Yalcouye made 36 appearances in all competitions last term, netting four goals and earning two assists as Graz won the Austrian Bundesliga title, and his capture will come as a huge boost to Alan Sheehan as he bids to add further depth to his squad. He's poised to become Swansea's eighth signing of the summer, with Bobby Wales, Zeidane Inoussa, Ricardo Santos, Cameron Burgess, Ethan Galbraith and Paul Farman all joining on permanent deals. Meanwhile, the club remain keen on adding more firepower to their ranks before the close of the window, having cooled their interest in QPR-bound Richard Kone. Jusef Erabi is another name to have been considered recently, while reports in France have linked the Swans with Schalke's Moussa Sylla.

Jack Grealish completes Everton transfer and explains why he chose iconic shirt number

Jack Grealish picked No 18 at Everton to follow in the footsteps of heroes Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney. The England winger signed on a season-long loan from Manchester City with the Toffees holding a £50m option next summer for a permanent deal. Everton will cover the majority of Grealish's wages which is believed to come at a cost of around £12m. Grealish, 29, signed for City in 2021 as part of a £100m deal but has fallen out of favour with Pep Guardiola. Now he's looking to rekindle his career at Hill Dickinson Stadium and will don the No 18 shirt his idols wore at Everton. 'There is a reason for [choosing number 18],' he said. "There were other numbers but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here. So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point. "I spoke to Wayne [Rooney] before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18 – so I hope he's happy as well!" Rooney wore the number in his first spell at the club before he went on to join Manchester United and become an England legend. Grealish is hoping regular football at Everton can force himself into Thomas Tuchel's plans next summer for the World Cup. But first he must impress for the Toffees. He said: 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - It's massive for me, honestly. This is a great club, with great fans. "As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go. 'On social media, I've been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there's that side of it as well and that's another reason why I chose Everton. I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I've had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I'm sure I will." Grealish won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup during his time at City. But he played just 715 minutes for City in the Premier League last season after falling down the pecking order. Everton boss David Moyes said: 'I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League, and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to. I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season. 'We're all looking forward to working with him and providing a platform for him to show the best version of himself.' Liverpool open talks over Marc Guehi transfer as double defender deal eyed

The Reds are hopeful of added to their central defensive ranks with two new additions before the transfer window closes, having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen this summer Liverpool have opened talks with Crystal Palace to land Marc Guehi, and the Reds are hopeful on a deal after initial discussions. ‌ Centre-back Guehi is keen to make the move to Anfield and play Champions League football. The decision will be a blow to Palace who had previously hoped they could hold on to their star defender. But earlier this week chairman Steve Parish did admit they may have to sell the player. ‌ The Reds will also target Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. They have yet to approach the Serie A club about the centre-back. ‌ But they are eager to land Leoni, 18, in this window and a ready to explore the details of a deal. Arne Slot wants defensive reinforcements in before the transfer window closes, with Crystal Palace defender Guehi the top target. The Reds sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the window while Nat Phillips also departed for West Brom. Joe Gomez is the most senior back up to Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk but he is currently injured. ‌ Leoni broke into the Parma team last season and made 17 appearances in the Italian top tier. The Italy under-19 international has been eyed by several top Serie A clubs, but Liverpool view him as a perfect addition to the squad and a player who can develop training alongside the likes of Van Dijk and Konate. Guehi has been a top target this summer having established himself as one of the leading English centre-backs in the Premier League. He captained Palace to the FA Cup last summer, and led to side to their penalty shootout win over Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield. ‌ Having come through the ranks at Chelsea, for whom he only played two competitive games, Guehi enjoyed an impressive season and a half on loan at Swansea City before his 2021 move to Palace. He has played 156 times for the south London club, scoring eight goals, and having broken into the England team while at Palace he currently has 23 international caps.
