Liverpool open talks over Marc Guehi transfer as double defender deal eyed

Daily Mirror2 days ago
The Reds are hopeful of added to their central defensive ranks with two new additions before the transfer window closes, having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen this summer
Liverpool have opened talks with Crystal Palace to land Marc Guehi, and the Reds are hopeful on a deal after initial discussions.

Centre-back Guehi is keen to make the move to Anfield and play Champions League football. The decision will be a blow to Palace who had previously hoped they could hold on to their star defender. But earlier this week chairman Steve Parish did admit they may have to sell the player.

The Reds will also target Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. They have yet to approach the Serie A club about the centre-back.

But they are eager to land Leoni, 18, in this window and a ready to explore the details of a deal. Arne Slot wants defensive reinforcements in before the transfer window closes, with Crystal Palace defender Guehi the top target.
The Reds sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the window while Nat Phillips also departed for West Brom.
Joe Gomez is the most senior back up to Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk but he is currently injured.

Leoni broke into the Parma team last season and made 17 appearances in the Italian top tier. The Italy under-19 international has been eyed by several top Serie A clubs, but Liverpool view him as a perfect addition to the squad and a player who can develop training alongside the likes of Van Dijk and Konate.
Guehi has been a top target this summer having established himself as one of the leading English centre-backs in the Premier League. He captained Palace to the FA Cup last summer, and led to side to their penalty shootout win over Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield.

Having come through the ranks at Chelsea, for whom he only played two competitive games, Guehi enjoyed an impressive season and a half on loan at Swansea City before his 2021 move to Palace.
He has played 156 times for the south London club, scoring eight goals, and having broken into the England team while at Palace he currently has 23 international caps.

Roy Keane's telling reaction to Ian Wright's Arsenal prediction with three problems fixed

Arsenal faced a myriad of issues last season as they finished behind champions Liverpool, but with their problems now supposedly addressed, Ian Wright and Roy Keane have talked up the club's title chances Ian Wright believes Arsenal will win the Premier League this season after the Gunners addressed three problem areas - and Roy Keane agrees. This comes after the former Manchester United star had previously rubbished Arsenal's chances at the back end of last season. ‌ Arsenal are coming into the new campaign off the back of three second placed finishes in the last three years. Last season, Mikel Arteta's side were ravaged by injuries in the forward department, were accused of being lightweight in midfield and suffered from a lack of goals as Liverpool cruised to their 20th top-flight title by ten points. ‌ The two previous years they lost out to Manchester City. Speaking on The Overlap podcast, former United captain Gary Neville asked Arsenal icon Wright whether Arteta's team could finally capture their first title since 2004. ‌ Beforehand however, he listed the trio of problems that Arsenal now seem to have dealt with, with the north London side now having players fit, while having brought in Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and the free-scoring Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. Neville, speaking to Wright, said: "Last season, three problems - injuries to [Bukayo] Saka and [Kai] Havertz obviously caused big problems, obviously you have to keep players fit. "You had a problem in midfield and you've got Zubimendi come in and you had a problem up top, with presence really, and Gyokeres has come in. Does that give them the 'difference' to win the League?" Wright responded: "I hope so. I think so, because we've added to a team that's finished second three times now and we've added goals to it. "You know, Zubimendi, especially with that mid-block [in the opposition] we can't break, Zubimendi the way he plays, I'm watching him break through [the mid-block]. You've got Gyokeres who can score a goal. You look at the fact that [ Arsenal ] were 17 goals behind Liverpool [last season] but defensively we're brilliant. ‌ "So if we can sort that out, and this mid-block [problem] then yeah, I'm going to go for Arsenal again, of course I am, because absolutely, why wouldn't I?" He continued: "What's good about us as well is the [contract] renewals. Saka, in good form now, he's probably going to renew. Gabriel, Ethan [Nwaneri], and for [Arsenal sporting director, Andrea] Berta to come in, and he's unbelievable when you meet him, Berta's done the deals, he's got it done." With caveats, Keane agreed with Wright, suggesting that Arsenal really have solved their issues, saying: "Yeah, I'm going with Arsenal," before warning that Liverpool's ability to score under pressure could still be the deciding factor. ‌ "The only thing, and I'll go back to Liverpool, and Liverpool on a bad day, when they're off they can score three goals," he said. "Even in the [Community] Shield at the weekend, [where they lost to Crystal Palace on penalties] they still scored two goals. And if you're scoring two goals on average every game, then that's hard to stop." However, Wright, unperturbed, reiterated: "We finished second three times, why would I go someone else?". Speaking at the end of last season, Arteta admitted that it hurt to watch Liverpool celebrate their second title in five years. ‌ He also hinted at the factors that prevented Arsenal from finally reaching the promised land for the first time in 21 years. "My motivations are much more focused in other aspects than that one but it hurts to watch it, that's for sure," Arteta said. "They've [Liverpool] done it in a manner, in a way, that has given no chance to the others. You have to congratulate that as well and you have to accept that there are reasons why you haven't been able to achieve it and try to improve." The Spaniard will now be hoping those problem areas have finally been addressed as Arsenal begin their assault on the title for 2025/2026 against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Roma emerge as loan suitors for Jadon Sancho — but Manchester United seek sale

Roma want to take Jadon Sancho on loan for the season, though Manchester United would prefer to sell the £73m winger. The Serie A club have registered a strong interest in the England international, who is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford and was part of the 'bomb squad' who were not allowed to train with United's first team in pre-season and were excluded from the pre-season tour of the United States. And United are trying to bring in money by selling some of their unwanted attackers after spending £200m on new forwards. They had agreed to sell Sancho to Chelsea for £25m as part of a loan move that saw him spend last season at Stamford Bridge but the London club paid a £5m penalty clause to opt out of buying him. Sancho has not played a league game for United since August 2023, though he did appear in the Community Shield last summer. After falling out with former manager Erik ten Hag in 2023, when he was banished to train with United's Under-18s, he went back to Borussia Dortmund on loan for the second half of the season, helping them reach the Champions League final. While Ruben Amorim has since replaced Ten Hag, United have moved on from Sancho, who is in the last year of his contract. United have brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, each for at least £62.5m, but they are yet to recoup any money in selling the four attackers who they said asked to leave Old Trafford Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan for the season, with the La Liga champions paying his wages. Chelsea are interested in Alejandro Garnacho and Real Betis want Antony, after his successful loan spell there last season, but no deal is imminent for either winger. Nevertheless, there is an expectation each will leave before the end of the transfer window.

Rasmus Hojlund in Man Utd transfer U-turn as AC Milan look to sign frozen out striker

MANCHESTER UNITED will help Rasmus Hojlund find a new club if the striker wants out. It's understood that Hojlund is considering his options after United splashed out over £200million on a new strike force this summer. 3 Man Utd striker Rasmus Hojlund has had interest from AC Milan this week Credit: Getty 3 After a stellar pre-season performance in United's 4-1 win over Bournemouth in Chicago, Hojlund expressed his desire to stay and fight for a place in Ruben Amorim's 4-3-2-1 system. But in the last fortnight the 22-year-old striker's fortunes have changed and U-turn in his camp could be imminent. His long-term future was plunged into doubt last week after United signed striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £73.7million. And on the day of Sesko's unveiling to 65,000 fans at Old Trafford last Saturday, Hojlund was an unused sub for the final pre-season friendly against Fiorentina. READ MORE MAN UTD NEWS Roo what? While United sources deny Hojlund has specifically been told he will not feature for United this season, his chances will be hard to come by. With the Red Devils out of Europe this season, there will not be as many opportunities to play in their reduced schedule. Hojlund, who signed for £72million from Atalanta in 2023, could be set for a return to Italy with AC Milan heading the queue of clubs interested. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK United would reportedly be willing to accept a loan deal worth £5million this season, with an option to buy next summer. It's understood that AC Milan won't want to pay more than £35million for the Dane. Wayne Rooney makes Premier League 2025/26 season predictions but his Man Utd tip leaves pundits shocked As yet, no agreement has been made on either element as Hojlund has still to make a firm decision about his short-term future. Boss Amorim has always spoken positively about Hojlund, whose deal expires in 2028 with an extension option available. A stay at Old Trafford, would see Hojlund competing for a place with Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Joshua Zirkzee. If Hojlund snubs Milan, the Italian giants might move for Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson and Paris Saint-Germain's Uefa Super Cup hero Goncalo Ramos. Hojlund struggled in his second season at the Red Devils and the United striker only netted 10 times and picked up four assists in 52 matches in the 2024-25 campaign.
