Liverpool 'agree British record Florian Wirtz deal' as Reds to sign German star

Daily Mirrora day ago

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, according to reports, with the Reds having agreed to meet the Bundesliga side's demands
Liverpool have reportedly clinched a British record-breaking deal for the highly sought-after Florian Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen's valuation finally met by the Anfield side.
The transfer saga that has dominated headlines is seemingly drawing to a close as the Reds have reached an agreement with the German club that is thought to reach their £126.9million valuation should various add-ons be met.

The move will surpass the £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo when they signed from Brighton two years ago.

After rejecting two previous offers from Liverpool, Leverkusen stood firm on their asking price, which Liverpool have now apparently satisfied, although the specifics of the deal's structure remain undisclosed.
Wirtz is poised for a medical and to put pen to paper, with reports noting that the German talent had his sights set on joining Liverpool and had agreed to terms over a fortnight ago.
Despite interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, Wirtz has opted for a future with the Merseyside outfit. The young star's ascent at the BayArena has been nothing short of spectacular, earning him the title of Bundesliga Player of the Season in the last campaign.
"You have to give special players like Flo the possibility to do special things on the pitch," former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso had enthused when discussing his prodigy.
Wirtz, a European Under-21 Champion with Germany in 2021, has already racked up an impressive 29 appearances for the senior national team, netting six goals for Die Mannschaft.

Former Germany gaffer and current Barcelona boss Hansi Flick praised: "Florian is just a huge asset for this team with his care-free nature.
"He's simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He's the full package."

Wrexham keeper Arthur loves pre-match engagement with fans

Okonkwo has become a real fans' favourite during his two seasons at The Racecourse and he is now preparing to make the step-up with the Reds to the Championship. The goalkeeper originally joined Wrexham on loan from Premier League giants Arsenal during the opening stages of the 2023-24 League Two campaign and he has fully embraced the pre-match interactions he has with supporters. Okonkwo told Amanpour and Company: 'I've seen both sides to it. I was at Arsenal and the season I had with the first team, you were literally escorted everywhere you're going. 'You don't see the fans. We have security everywhere and I think that's a special thing that's at Wrexham at the moment. 'You know, you come in before every game, we sign everyone's stuff and, you know, you feel good about it. 'It's really special to be able to engage with the fans before the game and that's something you don't really get, obviously, higher up the levels and... I hope it stays like that. 'Being able to engage with fans as much as we can, it's always a special feeling.' Two other fan favourites - Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard - have departed the club following the League One promotion-winning campaign and executive director Humphrey Ker says bidding farewell to players is tough to do. He said: 'Really, the cruellest irony of this whole thing is that the success that these players deliver for the club creates a huge challenge for them, in terms of their ability to continue with the club as it goes up through the levels. 'With Arthur, he's a young player, he's got unbelievable potential. He's already a fantastic player. 'So, he's someone that, I think has a very long future with the club if he so chooses and if we can hold on to him, you know, if he doesn't go and get signed by Real Madrid! 'This summer, we said goodbye to, in particular, Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard. 'Chomp, as he's known, Mark Howard is someone whose been with us from the National League all the way up. He's had three promotions in a row. 'Fletch has had two promotions with us and they're not only fantastic players, but they're great people. 'I mean, a huge basis of the success that we've enjoyed as a club has been the quality of not only the player, but the person that the manager's been able to bring in and it's brutal. 'It's really, really tough. I mean, it's such a tight-knit group. It's such an incredible dressing room. 'That character is really the most valuable thing that we've been able to unearth. The individual players, great players, great value in terms of transfer fees and wages, and all that sort of stuff. 'But, actually, the thing that has delivered three successive promotions, that starts with the people, the characters, the personalities. 'So, yes, saying goodbye to those people is very hard. It's very hard.'

Leroy Sane reveals why he snubbed Arsenal interest to join Galatasaray

Leroy Sane says he received 'many offers' to leave Bayern Munich, but decided to join Galatasaray due to 'the size of the club' and 'how much interest they showed' this summer. The 29-year-old forward touched down in Istanbul to great fanfare in the early hours of Thursday morning ahead of a proposed free transfer to the Turkish Super Lig giants. Pictured with a Galatasaray scarf draped around his neck, Sane grinned from ear to ear and waved to the large crowd of supporters which had gathered outside Ataturk Airport. Bayern had been determined to keep hold of Sane and offered the Germany international a bumper new contract to extend his stay into next season and beyond. But after switching representation to super-agent Pini Zahavi, Sane changed course and honed in on a move to Galatasaray, where he is expected to bank an eye-watering salary of £11million-a-season. That's why I'm happy to be back,' Sane told Turkish media upon his arrival in Istanbul. 'I can't wait to play my first game in front of the fans.' Arsenal were among the clubs keeping close tabs on Sane's delicate contract situation and the interest was mutual, with the winger said to be keen on a switch to the Emirates. But according to The Athletic, the Gunners were not decisive enough in making a move and Sane pushed for a 'more immediate resolution', which was duly provided by Galatasaray. 'There were many offers. But Galatasaray as a whole impressed me greatly,' Sane added. 'I was very impressed by the atmosphere, by the size of the club, by how much they wanted me, by how much interest they showed in me. That's why I'm here at Galatasaray.' Sane made sure to thank the thousands of supporters who had waited patiently outside Ataturk Airport for several hours. 'I'm very grateful to the fans. It means a lot to me that they came here at this hour,' he continued. More Trending 'I'm really looking forward to my first game in front of these fans.' The move brings an end to Sane's trophy-laden five-year spell with Bayern, where he won four Bundesliga titles, two German Super Cups, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. The former Manchester City and Schalke attacker finished with a tally of 61 goals and 55 assists in 220 games for the German champions. It's understood Sane will put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Galatasaray, tying him to the club until June 2028. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Great Britain's most successful alpine ski racer Dave Ryding to retire

The 38-year-old made history in January 2022 by becoming the first British alpine skier to win World Cup gold thanks to victory in the Kitzbuhel slalom. He hopes to compete at the fifth Winter Olympics of his career in February next year at the Milan-Cortina Games in Italy. 'Competing internationally, representing my country on the World Cup circuit, and going to four Olympic Games so far has been the privilege of a lifetime,' Ryding said in a statement. A post shared by Dave Ryding (@dave_ryding) 'I've always said that I'd only carry on for as long as I think I can perform to my best level, and making this decision now frees me up to give one last push to try and go one step further over the next season.' Lancashire-born Ryding has been a regular on the World Cup circuit since 2009 and achieved seven podium places, including his landmark gold. The slalom specialist finished sixth in the 2025 Alpine World Championships – Britain's best men's result since 1934. 'It's been one hell of a journey, and I've loved every second of it,' he said. 'Now it's time to make this final season a special one.'
