Take a look at the history, photos of the King Edward Hotel, now Hilton Garden Inn in Jackson

The Hilton Garden Inn in Downtown Jackson may look like an ordinary hotel from the outside, but the building holds more than a century of history within its walls. The current 12-story building was built in 1923 on the former site of the Edwards House, a hotel built by Major R.O. Edwards after the Civil War. The hotel was "Edwards Hotel" for the first few decades, adding "King" and dropping the "s" in 1954 when wealthy businessman R.E. "Dumas" Milner bought the building. Beyond a place for travelers to stay, the King Edward Hotel housed Okeh Records. The Mississippi Sheiks, Robert Stackhouse, Robert Nighthawk and Jimmie Rogers were some of the artists who played at the hotel. After years of declining business, the King Edward Hotel shut its doors in 1967. Through nearly four decades of changing hands and sitting unoccupied, the hotel went from downtown fixture to eyesore. Years of neglect left the building littered with trash and covered with weeds. Debris from the crumbling structure and broken windows buried the intricate design details inside. In 2003, a fire broke out on the second story, pushing the once luxurious building into further disrepair. In 2006, former New Orleans Saints running back Deuce McAllister partnered with Watkins Partners and Historic Restoration Inc. to begin repairs. For the next three years, the hotel, which was to reopen as a Hilton Garden Inn, came back to life as construction workers used photos to bring the building back to its original 1920s glory blended with some modern touches. Original details like the lobby's grand staircase were uncovered and restored. The renovation cost a total of $90 million. On Dec. 17, 2009, Then-Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson cut the ribbon on the new the Hilton Garden Inn, reopening the doors on the historic building. Got a news tip?
